Kent, thankyou for your kind words. Yes I am English. I live here in Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK. I frequently watch and admire your videos as I begin my journey on piano. You are a great inspiration for me and although I lack any kind of accomplished technique I get much fun and enjoyment in following your videos and experimenting on piano. Just the biggest thankyou Kent for putting them out into the world.
Thanks, Phyllis, I'm glad t you like my alter ego...we all have one...he's like the little voice in your head...that's telling you something you need to hear.
Once again thank you for this fantastic and generous gift (and for everything else you've shared with us over the last year and beyond.). As always, such stylish playing :) Wishing you every happiness throughout the holiday season, from Scotland.
Kent, lovely piece of improv in the middle of this one. Really love your "swinging" of this tune. Totally with Altered Dominant Man and his Charles Dickens quote by the way. The world really would be a better place if we could all live like the "converted" Scrooge character. Really appreciate what you are doing with these videos going out to the world Kent. Merry Christmas to you.
Dave, you are a stellar cat!...pardon the expression. Your comment brings joy to my heart. (I think I'll use that!) Are you English by chance? By the way, you got my point exactly about the conversion process. Thanks for writing and all the support. HNYear and swing loose!
Kent, I've been taking a break from piano to pursue other hobbies, but this fantastic video of yours has caught my interest. Hopefully I'll put in some quality time on the piano/jazz theory front very soon, thanks to you. Suggestion for you, Kent, Please, PLEASE open up an account at Patreon. That way I can become a patron and make regular monthly contributions to you, as can other of your rabid fans. I already support several people on Patreon and would be delighted to add you too. Incidentally, one of the hobbies I've taken up during my sabbatical from piano/jazz theory is learning UEB Braille. It's GREAT for learning to have a very delicate touch (to say the least).
Have you mentioned Patreon to me in the past? I haven't looked into it. Thank you for the suggestion, and that's interesting about the UEB, which I wasn't aware of.
Kent, Patreon is fast becoming the preferred way for artists and citizen journalists to gain financial independence to create on TH-cam. Check out this Patreon account that I support, whose audience is similar to yours: www.patreon.com/ConnorJones After you create your Patreon account, put a link to Patreon in your online transcripts and in the introduction to your TH-cam videos. I'll bet within literally days you'll have many, MANY patrons.
Fantastic arrangement Kent, very fun. Looking forward to studying this lesson. Great quote too - love the book and have you seen the 1951 film version with Alistair Sim? Sick! Marley’s ghost delivering your quote is blood-curdling and heartbreaking at the same time. Have a great Christmas and as always thanks for sharing the wealth!
That's the best film of Dickens' great masterpiece. You should read the book, (if you haven't) and you will want an engraved copy. The Patrick Steward 1999 version is worth watching as a newer version. You nailed it, brother...those words are blood-curdling and heartbreaking. Thanks for that. Happy New Year, sir!
Wonderfully played: great improv! (Also nice to see that ADEM has the Christmas spirit.) Btw, well deserved tip of the hat to Russell Malone. He seemingly doesn't get enough credit as a guitarist. Has he ever appeared with you?
I think you're asking about the pentatonic scale. It's still built on the root of F. but it's an Eb major pentatonic scale starting on the 2nd mode (F) which fits an Fsus chord. As I explained in the video it's like holding a pedal tone over the whole first and section sections of the song.
Thanks Kent, would I be correct to say the key is still C-Major at that point, seeing as though it resolved to C-Major? If so, does it mean that in a progression, we can play a 2nd-mode pentatonic in the sub-dominant position, over the sub-dominant suspended chord? Sorry if my question seems stupid.
No question is stupid. However I'm playing this song in the key of F...so it resolves to F major and F is the tonic. The pentatonic scale I'm using is a 2nd mode Eb pentatonic over an Fsus chord. Well--spoken, refined, polite, and classy...those English folks. Thanks for the support and kind words, Dave.
I love to watch you play Kent! I wish my hands worked like that. Great arrangement!
Some inherited talent, a lot of practice, and perseverance-...that's all it takes! Thanks!
Love the altered dominant ego man ... Nice way to end an evening listening to the best teacher on you tube!
Thanks, Phyllis, I'm glad t you like my alter ego...we all have one...he's like the little voice in your head...that's telling you something you need to hear.
Lots of good stuff here Kent. Love that tip about using the #iv as a substitute for the I chord
Fred Hersch showed me that on the last 16 bars of "The Song Is You". Read his book!
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones at the Jazz Ranch, Kent!
Thanks and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
A great rendition of this classic Christmas song. Never expected this superb educational experince with this song, Kent!! Many thanks from Switzerland
You can learn from a poet, an artist, a writer, a musician, but you can learn more from a brick layer and a plumber.
Hey Kent! I always enjoy your videos and can take a lot away from each of them. I loved the quartal voice section you covered. Tis the season
Thanks for the comment and noting that. Have a swingin' holiday!
Great lesson....Thank you...
Much appreciated!

He appreciates that and is not modest with compliments. Merry Christmas!
Thank you! By the way, your book is very good! 👍🏼
Thank you, that means more to me than you know, because it was years of work and knowledge.
Some of that reminded me of Mr. Roger's pianist, Johnny Costa!!
Great compliment...He was great.....and so was the show! Thanks!
Wonderfully played: great improv! (Also nice to see that ADEM has the Christmas spirit.)

A singer I work with knows him well but I've never met him. Thanks for the compliment and HE"S back!
"It is there and then it's not there". Just like ghosts ;-). Cheers Kent.
Ghost have it best.....but we'll have to wait! Cheers and swing loose!
@ 11:58 did the key switch to Eb Dorian, or was something else happening there?
