  • When I asked Ron if he could pick one bike from his incredible collection of BSA's, it was very interesting to see which bike he picked! It's a great story about the rarest bike in his collection.
    I hope you enjoy this video. I must go back again one of these days and learn more about these other amazing bikes.
    Buy me a coffee? ☕ 😉

    Hi all, hope you are all well.
    In around 1962 I had a Saturday job helping an elderley (it seemed at the time!) neighbour with odd jobs. He had one of these which was always in trouble and had a spare non runner machine for parts! even though they were not all that old. My introduction to powered 2 wheels when I was 13 or 14 !
    All the very best from the UK

    I had 2 of these when I was 14 years. Many happy days on the fields 😎

    I'm just reading Bert Hopwood's book 'Whatever happened to the British motorcycle industry' and I think there is mention in there about the Dandy originally having an aluminium cylinder and only later an iron one. That along with other design faults led to yet another failed attempt at new products..... the whole of British Industry history is like that, and people wonder how come everything is now made in China !

    • @billycaspersghost7528
      @billycaspersghost7528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You said it. Always too little too late and skimped on design. I seem to remember Hopwood quoting it as an example of how not to do it.
      Strangely ,about 10 years back an Engineering Placement student doing his intern year with the firm I work at ,found one of these in the basement of his shared old student house, and asked if I was interested.
      I wasn`t.
      Maybe I was wrong. Don`t think so ,I have enough old engineering curiosities in the machine shop where I work.

      Lack of investment, The UK was broke after ww2. With cheap small cars like the ford Anglia and the Mini, who wanted small commuter bikes anyway ? Fast fun machines for the weekend or summer fine, but a wimpy thing like this, forget it.

    • @thakery5720
      @thakery5720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roeng1368 You are right there - if you get a chance to read the book it details things well - the sad bit is the Italians and Japanese not only made the small bikes that were needed in UK, but also later made bigger bikes and took the much-needed American export market away from Britain .

    Another frightful model was the BSA Beagle. I showed interest in buying one when they 'came out' and the BSA dealer actively discouraged me and told me to buy a Tiger Cub instead....and he wasn't a Triumph agent himself !.

    Thats a Beeza I knew little about, I know more now and thats great . . .
    In common with the "Beagle" and various other BSA designs you can see the potential, you can see the typical ingenuity, you can see where they were trying to go . . . But sadly didn't quite get there . .
    Some make harsh comments about these "failures" and perhaps they are justified, but many don't fully understand the back story, developement and testing is always the key, but with a desperate need for sales, sometimes this was sadly lacking . . .
    1950s Britain was in "export or die mode" as a country, having been brought to her knees by the expenditure required to fight TWO world wars, despite being on the winning side she was worse off than some of the vanquished - the consequences of this were far reaching .
    I'm glad to see this bike, such an original and complete example must be very, very rare, fascinating to see - thanks, very enjoyable . .

      Actually, it was the experienced designers, who were given a budget of Diddly Squat and had to make the best of it. They were rubbish! Failed totally before it even got off the drawing board. Management believed that Joe Public would buy it because it was Brirish, so blinkered were they in their views of "Foreigners" engineering.

      T160 is an incredible bike - if only they had sorted out the electric start and the valve guides. The middle cylinder just ran way to hot out here in Oz.

    Oh dear, I wonder who designed it, he wasn't very good was he. One of the neatest little bikes made some years later was the Puch Maxi, a very simple and logical design but well made and Puch sold thousands.

      Actually it was one of the greatest designers of his day, Bert Hopwood who also designed the Norton Dominator, BSA A10 and Triumph Trident amongst others. Was most likely rushed, underfunded and designed to constraints set by the men in suits upstairs who had no real idea of motorcycles.

    they realised it was not working in the market place ! understatement bsa went on to produce in 1970's under the Ariel name a 3 wheeler that cost 2million to develop if only they had focused on the bandit 350 / 500

  • @tubadude905
    @tubadude905 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really interesting - It'd never heard of that model. You'd think they would have made it for the moped market where they'd have a wider audience (assuming you could ride a moped at 16 back then in the UK).

    A Dandy was my first motorised transport at 16 years old. I passed my test on it and learned a LOT about how to maintain stuff. It's incredible how that dreadful design ever got into production. the engineering was dreadful. You had to split the engine to get at the contact breaker points, the main bearings were grease lubricated at the same time, until they did a simple mod with a greasing point ( so you never pump grease into the bearings while the engine is hot. You had to take a screw out of the crankcase casting and pump into a grease nipple until grease came out of the hole. With a hot engine the grease melts into the crankcase instead. When i started mine there was a MASSIVE dense cloud of grey smoke that filled the walkway alongside the house) There was no suspension damping whatsoever and yet the handling wasn't bad due to the reasonable size wheels and low speed. The rear light bulb blew at regular intervals. At one stage the internal flywheel came loose on the shaft. It still ran at 10 mph, to get me home, and needed a bit turned off on the lathe to get it to fit properly on the taper shaft. But it was independant transport, giving a sense of freedom. It started first kick, and did 80 mpg. To think I ignored a chance to buy a BSA Bantam, a design stolen from the Germans at the end of WW2, and which sold in their 1000s!
