Larry didn't leave IU because of the pressure. In his own words, "I didn't have the funds." Bobby Knight later acknowledged that he had failed Larry miserably.
@RaymondBCrisp He had a full ride scholarship. He just didn't have the clothes or money for food and basic necessities while living on campus. I think he had maybe one change of clothes. He writes about it in his and Magic's book, When the Game Was Ours. Knight was oblivious.

To answer your questions: 1) Yes, Bird made the All NBA 1st Team in his rookie year (and was selected for the 1st team 9 years in a row). Magic Johnson didn't make the 1st Team until his 4th season, and Jordan didn't make it until his 3rd season. Kobe didn't make the 1st team until his 6th season, LeBron his 5th season. 2) When Bird played his rookie year, he inherited the worst Celtics team in history (and 2nd worst in the NBA). By just adding him to this aging starting lineup, he led the Celtics to the best record that season of 61-21, a 32 game improvement over the prior season of 29-53, eventually losing to the 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals. In this season, he didn't have McHale, Parish or DJ. So yes, Bird was able to win big with a subpar team. 3) As far as "back and forth" with Magic, yes, Magic beat Bird 2 out of 3 finals championships. But in the 3rd 1987 matchup, both Parish and McHale played with foot injuries (Parish had a sprained ankle and McHale a broken foot), and their bench players Bill Walton and Scott Wedman both were on the injured list, forcing the starting five to play far more minutes than usual. But the one deal killer was when Len Bias, the number 2 overall draft pick and seen as a potential NBA star, died of a cocaine overdose days after the draft. The Lakers were healthy, and had a deep bench. The Celtics ran out of luck before the Finals even started. And as an additional aspect, Bird injured his back in 1985 while shoveling gravel building his mother's driveway. Yes, as a millionaire superstar Bird mowed his own lawn, did his own work. This was a watershed moment in Bird's career, leading to back trouble later in his career. Magic never had this type of injury, neither did MJ. As most people here would agree, a broken leg would be far preferable to spinal disc problems.

I have to disagree. Danny played for the Toronto Blue Jay's before going to the Celtics and was arguably the most athletic player on the team. He was cash coming in. Parrish was notably drafted three times, twice by the ABA and once by the NBA and Golden State. They weren't playing well as a team and Robert at 7' 1" was scapegoated, targeted, and harassed for being black. He jumped up and down when Red traded for him. DJ already had an NBA championship and a finals MVP before he went to Boston. He was considered one of the best guards in the league. Although, of course, Larry could and did motivate his teammates to play at their highest levels. But they rose to the occasion for years. None of these guys were two-bit players. Kevin was sixth man for six years, not three. His records still stand at U of Minnesota and he was the third overall draft pick out of college. Danny was a three-sport athlete in high school and won the John R. Wooden Award in college. Robert and DJ had multiple accolades. Look this stuff up. Bill Walton also won that while with the Celtics. Danny wasn't just drafted by the Blue Jays. He played two seasons and did well. Parish got the blame for a crap GS team that never played well together. He was the victim of racism and, as the top pick and a 7'1" at the five, got the blame. Wilkens was known for being soft on that team and he and Robert clashed. Red saw his potential and he was right to bring him to Coach Fitch, who knew how to bring the best out of him. The 80s Celtics, especially from '85 - 87, go down as one of the top five teams of all time. Live with it. All HOFers of their own accord. The Hall doesn't select mid players because of who they played with. Pathetic logic, no facts from you, man. Can't you read a Wiki page at the very least? Check out the links there after statements. Multiple sources, not Wiki, back up what I'm saying. Run along now...
This video isn't very accurate. Larry, for instance, wasn't chopping wood when he hurt his back. He was shoveling gravel around his mom's driveway. BTW, Earvin didn't beat Larry every time. Magic had 5 rings to Bird's 3. I believe Larry would have won more without all the injuries - broken back, congenitally narrow nerve sheath along his spine, bone spurs, and double torn Achilles surgeries. It was so sad when they both had to retire. 😢 Not your fault, though. Nice reaction.
@Cpski4 The absolute best source about Larry and Magic is the book they co-authorized with sports journalist Jackie McMullan, When The Game Was Ours. The documentary, A Courtship of Rivals, was based on that book. I have the book, but listened to an audio version. Magic's and Larry's rings weren't all against each other, but man when it was the Celtics vs the Lakers, it was something else to see those two guys go against each other. Sean David's Basketball Time Machine is a great TH-cam channel. You'll find a lot of good videos from him.
@@Cpski4 BTW, look up NBA Legends and you'll find more information and biographies. The list isn't very long, but it includes quite a few of the '80s Celtics players and of course, Earvin "Magic" Johnson. Bird, McHale, Parish, Walton, Nate "Tiny" Archibald, and Dennis Johnson (DJ) are on that list. So is Pete Maravich, who played with Bird early on before he retired. You could do a reaction to Pistol Pete. He was phenomenal. RIP Pete, Bill, and DJ.
Larry has the best mind for basketball ever. The "proof?" A surprisingly not often talked about accomplishment, one that im almost sure no one in any of the "big 4" american sports can claim: Larry Bird is the only human to win an MVP (i.e. best PLAYER in the league) To win Coach of the Year (BEST COACH in the league) And then win Executive of the Year (i.e. the best at putting a team TOGETHER) And just to add on, also won Rookie of the Year, Finals MVP, All Star MVP, and Gold Medal in the Olympics.... So the guy would win, or put his team in an incredible postion TO WIN, wayyyy more often than not... Ps-- go look up some Len Bias stories... biggest WHAT IF in sports
Birds first year, that Celtics team was TRASH.. they won 29 and 32 games the two previous seasons and LOST their NUMBER 1 scorer, and replaced him with Larry Bird. bird with that SAME team won 61 games.. The Celtics never won less than 57 games until 1989 when Bird got injured and played only 9 games.. Mchale and Parish were BOTH 20 point 10 rebound guys that season but the Celtics ONLY won 42 games or so.. Bird came back the next season and the Celtics won 57, 56 and 51 games the next 3 seasons until Bird retired.. Bird had good players around him MOST of his career, BUT those good players were MEDIOCRE as a TEAM WITHOUT bird.. Bird MADE that team into an ALL TIME GREAT team AND made those GOOD players into HALL OF FAMERS.
6'-0" and chopped a lot of wood. i don't understand how someone standing 6'-9" would be able to do it. can understand how that could blow his back out.
The Lakers played in the weaker (at the time) Western Conference. So, LA had an easier time getting to the Finals, and usually we’re well rested to face Boston. Don’t get me wrong… the Lakers had definitely some of the most awesome teams ever in the 1980’s. But they didn’t have to go through Dr J and Moses Malone just to GET to the Finals. In the 1981 Eastern Conference Finals between Boston & Philly, it went to 7 games, and the largest margin of victory by either team was 2 points. AND Boston came back to beat Philly after being down 3-1 in the Series. That was in just the 2nd year Bird was in Boston. Bird was out of this world - nothing like him since. Never will be.
And I wish they would stop calling him unathletic and slow. He could and DID do whatever he needed to do. And the man had a third gear when he needed it. Nobody could outplay him before he hurt his back. Very few could, even after.

I said is factually accurate.
@@howdoicancel6760 With respect, your facts are opinions. I spelled out, player by player, the facts. They're all In the Hall of Fame. You didn't get there because of who you played with.
I remember it, but the information is at your fingertips. ✌️ out!
@@MS-zv4bf
lol , your proving
my point ……
McHale was a
sixth man for
six years , not
three ? Even better.
Ainge was drafted
by the MLB , my
point exactly. And,
do your research ,
many passed on
Parrish because
he was slow and
Lazy , not by the
Color of his skin.
He’s not Jackie
Robinson , LMAO
And, nobody claims
any of these guys
are two bit players .
Again , none of these
players were super
Stars on a stacked
team.. get over it !
@@howdoicancel6760 It's "you're," and no, I'm not. The only fact I got off was that McHale was 6th Man for five years, two of them winning 6th Man of the Year.
Not your fault, though. Nice reaction.
Please point me in the right direction!
The "proof?"
A surprisingly not often talked about accomplishment, one that im almost sure no one in any of the "big 4" american sports can claim:
Larry Bird is the only human to win an MVP (i.e. best PLAYER in the league)
To win Coach of the Year (BEST COACH in the league)
And then win Executive of the Year (i.e. the best at putting a team TOGETHER)
And just to add on, also won Rookie of the Year, Finals MVP, All Star MVP, and Gold Medal in the Olympics....
So the guy would win, or put his team in an incredible postion TO WIN, wayyyy more often than not...
Ps-- go look up some Len Bias stories... biggest WHAT IF in sports
🎼Ya gotta give the people
What they want🎵
What’s that ?
GOAT
No shade to Reggie Miller, but Larry Legend was a better shooter. FOUNDED the 50-40-90 club. End of story.
Ummmm it's "Master of all trades", not traits..... just sayin......
please watch and react to A Courtship of Rivals. the best sports documentary i've even seen.
Out on channel
Your grandma wants her shower cap back. Bird and Magic won 8 of the 10 rings in the 80s.
Reggie's sister Cheryl was a better shooter than Reggie. He and Larry were relatively close in shooting.

Can’t see it
@Cpski4 hmm, worked 4 me
If you were starting a BB team and the first pick was between Jordan and Bird, you’d pick Jordan every time if you wanted to win.
NEVER!!! Umpires didn't call his NUMEROUS traveling errors.
It is because ALL NBA players are not athletic
Yeah this isn't a very good vid to react too.
