Excellent work. I've watched about a dozen videos on sharpening a draw knife. Yours is the only one worth watching.

Just found an old draw knife at a pawn shop today. It's gonna take a while to get it flat and cleaned up. It was abused but I think I can bring it back. Thanks for your methods of sharpening.

Very interesting. When I'm working though my knife gets all caked with black pitch, and I haven't the time or facilities to go through all that. I just keep a piece of emery cloth(sand paper for metal) in my pocket while I'm peeling. When ever I get over heated and need to take a minute I pull that out and shine up the bevel. I peel big logs for a log home builder in Alaska. I don't get it sharp as a razor, but I get the job done. I can clean a path a foot wide down a 50' log in 10 or so minutes. Hey also If you can't hear well try headphones.

I guess it is relatively simple to sharpen draw knife when it is flat….how do you sharpen it when it is curved?

Can you please tell me If the Japanese water stone is a 4000 or 8000 ? and how wide are your diamond whetstones in this vid ? also do you add water to your simple green all purpose cleaner or just use as is ? thank you very much, any info would be greatly appreciated ...

I bought a Narex curved drawknife and it came with a slight camber on the back that angles down to the blade edge. Is that normal for some to have that?

That would be the Simple Green cleaner.

I have been a pro woodworker for nearly forty years now and if there is one tool I avoid using if at all possible its my draw knives. With the best will in the world they are a pain to sharpen, a pain to use and frankly overrated. But there is one trick to make sharpening the bevel a lot easier and dead flat. You block up your stones to get the right angle then let the handles tip down and rest on the bench as you push it back and forth. The two handles and blade edge form a three point rest. As long as your stone does not slide around its the easiest way to get an edge on the damn things.
The last time I used one was to pair down tapered trenails for my timber frame house. It was hours of back breaking wrist burning agony until I pissed it Off and taper turned them on a lathe instead. So much quicker and easier, not to mention more accurate.
I guess people see the draw knife as a cool tool that is old school but not me. Its the one edge tool I have learned to hate and avoid like the plague.
Next time your thinking of shaping cabriole legs with one do yourself a favour. Rough it out on the bandsaw and shape it with an angle grinder with the flexible rubber pad and sanding discs. It messy but fast and accurate. Boat builder taught me that trick. They call angle grinders the boat builders chisel. Funny but true because those guys are having to work curves all the time and draw knifing short grain is a bastard of a job. But my main hate is tear out and draw knives can tear out nasty long strips and completely fuck up a piece your working on. I love my hand tools really I do but my draw knives ? Bastard things.

Ha ha! Tell us how you really feel!
They aren’t my favorite tool. Too many miles of bark strips as a kid.
      Good tips, btw.

It's fine to not like a tool. But id say either your tool isn't sharp or you're using it wrong or in the wrong application.
They're an EXTREMELY versatile and useful tool to those who master or even get mildly accomplished in using them.
