- “Catch’em Alive Jack Abernathy,” an Oklahoma man who can capture wolves alive with his bare hands, fascinates Teddy Roosevelt. Abernathy’s young sons, Bud and Temple, inherit Jack’s adventurous spirit and make epic journeys across the growing country meeting American icons of the day. Bud and Temple were famous; yet, most have never heard the lost adventures of the “Abernathy Boys.”
What an incredible story. I’m so glad that I came upon it.
I read the book “Bud and Me” to enthralled 4th graders in the school library back in 2010. It’s the greatest Oklahoma adventure story ever told. It would make a blockbuster movie! I located Catch ‘Em Alive Jack Abernathy’s grandson, Jack Walker, in California that same year. Jack is a musician/composer. His mother was Pearlie, the youngest of the Abernathy children. We had some very nice conversations via email.
You sound like the greatest teacher, one that shows the kids adventure! And 4th graders imaginations are enthralled with that!
You're a great teacher!
Their dad’s name was Jack and would catch wild 150 lb wolves and sell them for $50 He would shove his fist down the wolves throat and grab his jaw to catch them. The boys mother died when they were young and the boys started out traveling by themselves on horses at the age of 5 and 13 Theodore Roosevelt was a wolf hunter and became friends with the boys dad . Their dad even boxed and spared with the president and even knocked him down in a friendly fight. Later down the road their dad became a U.S. Marshal and eventually joined the secret service . The boys were like celebrities met and became friends were greeted by everyone they even met the Wright Brothers and sat in their plane . They rode all the way to the White House and sat in an Oval meeting with the entire U.S.Senate. They also bought a car for $400 called a Brush Motor and drove that across country . One of the boys later on in life was a Texas Governor the other Texas oil tycoon. Sad to say just looking around the Times have definitely changed for the worse.
Are you gonna add "OETA Presents Nature Cat at the OKC Zoo"?
Lol today the kids would be put in foster care and the parents would be locked up. 😂😂😂
