I can not tell you in words how much I appreciate you sharing your techniques, mistakes, and most importantly how you fix your mistakes. I’m sure you’ve been told this many times, but I don’t think you can hear this enough - you are a true master craftsman. I’m astonished with what you achieve when restoring old pieces of furniture. When watching your videos there are times when I think I can do this or that, and then you do some intricate work on a piece and I’m literally gobsmacked.
To me the most impressive thing you do is matching stain and making a piece look period correct. In some of the videos the amount of time you spend painstakingly matching the stain is amazing. I hope that people realize that the videos you do on restoring their piece is actually adding value to it.
I truly look forward to every video you post. I thank you greatly for sharing your techniques and the patience you demonstrate when restoring a piece!

Master Johnson, This is another beautiful project brought to a conclusion. The idea of keeping family documents in a piece of furniture that many members of the family have seen and touched over the centuries is wonderful. My own family has done the same in our ancestral palazzo in Lanciano, Province of Abruzzo, Italy. We, however, have an entire room dedicated with many pieces of furniture set into the walls and arches since the family line goes back to the Second Crusade (almost 900 years ago) and covers 25 generations. Once again, excellent craftsmanship! Have a serene and joyful Christmas and thank you for the many gifts you have provided us over the course of the last year.

@@mercoid The Germans did ransack the palazzo after the armistice but my cousins had the presence of mind to hide everything of value. They stole a bicycle, a radio, a typewriter, and food stores. Over the centuries, we had a lot of practice. The edifice has 72 rooms, hidden passages and rooms. World War II was just the latest adventure. We've had to hide our documents, books, ledgers, and other valuables during the Great War, The Unification of Italy, the French Invasion of 1806, the bivouac of 300 French officers of Napoleon's Army on their transit back to France from Egypt in 1801, and the French Revolt of 1799. Before that, the Kingdom of Naples was pretty stable for about 700 years. Master Johnson would have a field day with the custom furniture, all of which have secret compartments and hiding places for sensitive papers.

Believe the making of trim/moldings was the job of jointers back in the day. They would have scores of planes with the different profiles machined into the blades. Also used several different planes to get more complex shapes.

I have picked up several "different" planes over the years. I have several younger (than me) relatives who really enjoy old time cabinetry for which you need old time (timeless) tools. Hello Tom!
I wish you happy and relaxing holidays and would like to thank you again for the generosity with which you share your knowledge. I've benefited from it for years, and it is also so nice for me that you settled in Maine, where I felt more comfortable for a few weeks around 15 years ago than anywhere else in the United States.
As far as loosening glue joints, I might have some advice for you: If I have to loosen hide glue joints, then I always try it first with Isopropyl -Alcohol, which I bring into the joint with a syringe. With the alcohol you can "crack" the glue, the rest is then much easier. That mostly works very well for me, with modern glue of course you don't have a chance with it. The restorer who told me about this also said you could often hear a faint crackling sound when the alcohol was doing its job. I can't do that, but that's more because I've been very hard of hearing for many years. The process naturally reaches its limits when there is a risk that the Alcohol will attack a shellac surface that is to be preserved or even a veneer. But it works really well for me, especially inside furniture.
    Many greetings from Germany: Georg

    Tom,
I so love your videos, AND the incredible pieces you work to restore.
Your video quality is second to None. Your editing is superb, clean and does not skip a step, including where you admit, "Own" your mistakes. This is especially helpful for viewing How easy our own mistakes are to correct. No need for stomping or yelling, just logical, carefully dealing with the correction.
May you and yours have a Blessed and Merry Christmas!

You had me worried a bit, Mr. Johnson when I read the title of this video and it said, Case Closed. I thought oh no, don't tell me he's retiring. Very happy to see that wasn't the case. Another great restoration. Thanks for all your expertise and hard work.

@16:20, you give the viewer a warning about the coming noise volume of the power tool you're about to use. I've never seen any channel host do that. Thank you for being so thoughtful and considerate. Of course such kindness is in perfect keeping with the tone of your wonderful presentations. Merry Christmas and Happy Year, and God Bless you to you and yours.

Seeing the TH-cam 100K plaque on the wall above the piece, it is obvious that this project was done on your own piece of furniture and will hold the historical records of your own family. Perhaps you will consider doing a tour of your home so we can see the furniture you own. The small glimpse we had at the end of the video was tantalizing, to say the least.
Bravo on an excellent video, and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
