It's always amazed me in the US that they take your card away to make the payment. For 20+ years we have been told in there UK to never let the card leave your sight to help prevent skimming and unauthorised transactions.

    • @AB-jz9ns
      @AB-jz9ns 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There is a major difference between POS in the US and POS machines around the world (especially EU). The requirement for POS at restaurants in EU countries is for the POS machine to capture chip info from credit card as well as PIN. In the US, since they began credit card processing many many years ago they went with physical signature and later as it became available they added chip info. You cannot have a handheld device brought to the table that captures customer signature. ONLY PIN number. This will be slowly changing as the devices getr better and smarter.
So the bottom line is NO, the US banks are not behind the EU ones when it comes to technology.

    • @jca111
      @jca111 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@AB-jz9ns There is something wrong with your logic - the EU had signature credit card processing for decades prior to chip and pin as well. We didn't just get credit cards when chip and pin came along, we had had them for at least 20-30 years prior with just signatures. I remember the days of the carbon paper slip credit card processing. It's just that the UK & EU banks mandated the Chip and Pin roll outs in the early 2000s.

    • @AB-jz9ns
      @AB-jz9ns 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jca111I never said that Europe did not have credit cards requiring signatures. Everywhere on the planet that used the old mechanical way that captured the card impront required a signature. My poiunt is in regards to POS machines. When those became available, meaning when the merchants first had the ability to receive a transaction validation code on the store premises the US went with a chip and signature requirement while europe and elsewhere they went with chip and PIN. This is not a secret , there have been many articles written about it. Also, to be historically correct the credit card as a means of payment was started in the US in 1950. It took 15-20 years for Europe to start using them. Chip and pin started around 1990 in Europe and in tghe US around 2015. That 15 year difference shows you why in the US you still have many restaurants taking youir credit card. In europe, credit card use between 1970-1990 was nowhere near as high as in the US! Thus ehen banks started issuing credit cards to the masses in the 1990s they already had chip and PIN.

My friend worked at a Pizzeria/Italian restaurant and he told me of a worker who was making a few bucks every now and then. For example, if the bill was $45 bucks and the customer left a 10 dollar tip, she would go back and change the tip from 10 to 11. Very minor changes. She didn't caught for several months until one day she did when she took it overboard by testing her luck. She doubled the tip. Customer came back angry, police were called, and she was fired. I don't know what happened afterwards. I heard that she got lucky because she didn't do this for long, didn't steal that much, and was charged with petty theft since it was under 500.

The cops came out and said there’s nothing they will do about it they’re not gonna take the time to figure out who it was, and that’s even though my grandmother knew exactly who it was. And my grandmother said what about the tools that were stolen right here in this county, and she showed them a text message from the lady admitting she had taken the tools. And they said that they can’t be sure that The thief is the one who stole the tools even though the text message came from her phone, maybe somebody else sent a text message. Just seems like they were doing anything they could to get out of doing work. And she lives in a rural county not a big city. I’m wondering if big cities actually care more about this stuff, or maybe it just hit and miss.

We’ve been using contactless cards here for about 15-16 years. However even before that when we had the old carbon paper payment method, when you had to sign for a payment, that would always be bought to the table, or you would take your card to pay. It’s never been the norm here for a server to take your card and disappear with it. However on card microchip technology is about 30 years old and was first used in continental Europe, I think in France.

The two primary federal laws covering procedures after card theft or loss are the Fair Credit Billing Act and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your liability for unauthorized charges depends on whether the thief personally presented your card to make the purchase or just stole the number.
If the thief personally presents your card to make the purchase, the card issuer can't hold you liable for more than $50 in fraudulent charges. (12 C.F.R. § 1026.12). Many card issuers waive this $50. You have no liability if the thief stole the number, but not the card.
However, in either of the above situations, it's important to notify the card issuer as soon as you know of the theft...
With ATM or debit cards, you must act quickly to avoid full liability for unauthorized charges when your card is lost or stolen. Under the federal Electronic Fund Transfer Act, your liability is:
      1. $0 if you report the loss or theft of the card immediately and before any unauthorized charges are made.
      2. up to $50 if you notify the bank within two business days after you realize the card is missing
      3. up to $500 if you fail to notify the bank within two business days after you realize the card is missing, but do notify the bank within 60 days after your bank statement is mailed to you listing the unauthorized withdrawals, or
      4. unlimited if you fail to notify the bank within 60 days after your bank statement is mailed to you listing the unauthorized withdrawals. (15 U.S. Code § 1693g).
      5. If you can convince the bank that your notification failure was due to extenuating circumstances, it must extend the notification timeline for a "reasonable period."
Note that if the theft involved only your ATM or debit card number-and not the card-you're not liable for unauthorized transactions if you report them within 60 days after your statement is sent to you. I posted this and it got deleted???
      Actually... IT IS THE LAW...
The theft or loss of a credit card, debit card, or ATM card can happen to anyone-and you need to be prepared to take action, protect your rights, and stop thieves in their tracks.
If your ATM, debit, or credit card is lost or stolen, don't panic. Federal laws and bank policies limit your liability for unauthorized charges. But it's important to notify the bank or card issuer of the loss or theft as soon as you discover it.
The two primary federal laws covering procedures after card theft or loss are the Fair Credit Billing Act and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.
      Report the Loss Immediately
      1. As soon as you discover the theft or loss of your credit card, debit card, or ATM card, you should report it to the card issuer or bank. Almost all companies have 24-hour service numbers and loss departments to handle these emergencies.
      2. Let the representative know right away that your card was stolen or lost. Report when you realized the card went missing. The customer service representative might ask for details and confirm whether you made certain recent transactions.
      3. Timing is critical: the sooner you call, the less likely it will cost you any money. Your protection against unauthorized charges depends on the card type and when you report the loss.
Reporting a Credit Card as Stolen or Lost
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your liability for unauthorized charges depends on whether the thief personally presented your card to make the purchase or just stole the number.
      1. If the thief personally presents your card to make the purchase, the card issuer can't hold you liable for more than $50 in fraudulent charges. (12 C.F.R. § 1026.12). Many card issuers waive this $50.
      2. You have no liability if the thief stole the number, but not the card.
      3. However, in either of the above situations, it's important to notify the card issuer as soon as you know of the theft.
To dispute unauthorized charges, send a letter to the credit card company at the address given for this purpose, not the address for sending your payments. Include your name, address, account number, and a description of the billing error. You may use the Federal Trade Commission's sample letter. Send your letter so that it reaches the creditor within 60 days after the first bill showing the unauthorized charge. (12 C.F.R. § 1026.13).
      1. Or you can file your dispute online or through a mobile banking app. (But you generally get more legal protections with a letter, so it's best to follow up with a written notification.)
      2. After you report your card as stolen or lost, the issuer will suspend the card and send you a new one. This closing of the account is different from canceling or permanently closing a credit card, which can cause problems with your credit reports. The issuer will also credit back any fraudulent charges made to your account, although you can expect them to conduct a fraud investigation.
Reporting a Debit Card or ATM Card as Stolen or Lost -
With ATM or debit cards, you must act quickly to avoid full liability for unauthorized charges when your card is lost or stolen.
It's important to review your statements. So, open your monthly statements promptly and compare them to your receipts.
Voluntary Caps on Liability for Debit Card Charges:
      1. In response to consumer complaints about the possibility of unlimited liability, some card issuers cap the liability on debit cards at $50. And some banks don't charge anything if unauthorized withdrawals appear on your statement.
      2. Also, some states have capped the liability for unauthorized withdrawals on an ATM or debit card at $50.
How to Protect Your Cards and Information: Know where your credit, debit, and ATM cards are, and make sure they're secure. Here are some more tips for using and protecting your cards.
      1. Check your statements. Regularly review your account activity either online or on a mobile app.
      2. Enable mobile alerts for purchases or suspicious activity. Some credit and debit card issuers also provide free fraud monitoring alerts via text, phone, or email.
      3. Exercise caution in giving out your credit card account number over the phone. Don't give out the card number unless you initiate the call.
      4. Don't leave blanks on charge slips; draw a line across any blanks.
      5. Always take your receipts, and keep them until you reconcile your bill.
      6. Cut up or shred your old cards.
      7. Review your credit reports to look for new accounts under your name that you didn't open.
      8. Carry only the cards you think you'll need.
      9. Make and keep a record of your card information, listing the issuer's customer service number, and keep this in a safe place.
      10. Ignore anyone contacting you to "verify" your account information by phone or email. The call or message could be a phishing scam designed to steal your account information.
Tips for Using and Protecting Your Debit and ATM Cards:
      1. Review your statements.
      2. Always take your receipts; don't throw them away in a trash can near the ATM.
      3. Protect your PIN. Never leave this information out in the open or written down in an easy-to-spot location. Don't keep a copy of your PIN with you or the card.
      4. Don't base PINs on common personal information, like your address, family birth dates, or pets' names-those are easy for a thief to figure out.
      5. Cut up or shred your old cards.
      6. Record your transactions, and reconcile your monthly statement promptly.
      7. You should also periodically check your account activity, especially if you use online banking. Compare the transactions to those you've recorded and report any discrepancies to your bank right away.

These are good tips. You don't have to be afraid of using your debit or credit card, though. When I was a waitress how a lot of waitresses and restaurant businesses rob or attempt to rob and steal from customers who pay with cards is through the Tip Portion on the receipt that is often handed back to the waitress. Which is the Merchant receipt. You would be shocked and amazed at how many people hand it back, leaving the Tip Line Blank. Opening the door for them to charge whatever they want. It has happened to me before. And most people never get that money back. Those who are lucky enough to get it back go through an extremely hard time trying to do so.

Where a lot of these restaurants and waitresses are robbing and stealing money from customers who pay with cards is through the Tip Portion of the reciept. Most people sign the merchants copy of the receipt, and hand it back, leaving the Tip Line Blank. Never ever hand the Merchants copy of the receipt back with the tip line Blank. They can't necessarily charge at whim, but this does leave the door open for them to Charge you whatever the hell they want to. And Most people never get that money back.
