Had mine remapped 3 weeks ago still putting a bloody big smile on my face even more than before It’s like a new car and a small increase in mpg can’t be bad 😎🏴
I had my 2.7 HSE LRD 3 remapped, l did a long journey to the S o France straight after, gotta say like driving another car, accelerated so much better noticed the improved from pull away immediately, and the increased full consumption was certainly noticeable, local garage did it for about £175 lv had that back many fold in diesel saved. That was about 4 years ago, l did have to change intercooler down pipe but that could have split anyway.
Just come back to this after a couple of years. I'm thinking of doing this now, but am just worried about snapping the crank as that's a weak point. How is yours going? Is it still running ok?
Was considering doing this until I discovered that it would cost me about an extra £200 a year in insurance costs. If you don't tell them and you have an accident you are not insured! A friend (who also has a D4) told me a friend of his was considering doing this but had an accident shortly before having it done - I was told that the first thingh the insurtance did was to check for a re-map. So, don't do it without checking with your insurance first.
@mellowgamer6353 Unfortunately, I had to sell it to buy my first house. In hindsight, I probably would have just gone for just the economy remap as they do have issues with the crank if over tuned. The later engines were upped a little anyway with the R-Sport edition, so they're well capable. I'd highly recommend getting an icarsoft scanner though to check the multiple sensors and scanners they have, there's several in the exhaust system alone. Had one on the DPF go prior to the remap and caused no end of woes trying to get to the bottom of the issue.
I wouldn't risk that with the TDV6. The enormous pressure on the undersized crankshaft bearing can have the worst consequences. Having a little more fun with the extra power isn't worth the risk of engine damage.
I think the biggest issue with any remapped diesel is the extra smoke produced, notice after the remap when he pulls away hard 8.52 minutes, its laying down two black smoke trails? I have never had a turbo diesel thats been tuned that does not make extra smoke, especially off boost conditions, and I have had a few, Im no green nutter but do think you have to be careful of our image to others concerning visible smoke.
dunno how many clicks on your d3 but next time you change eng.oil filter, cut the filtrate in half, spread it out, any signs of bearing metal will show, I did this as a heavy truck eng field serviceman with Cummins have a d4,uses 17l/100 pulling 2 tonne van, uses 12 normally, that is fuel measured at pump, the disco puter reads 7'8 on long runs, which is nonsense have a passat tdi, 5.5l/100 here too Melbourne 1200km one tank and it is so powerful
From what I've read elsewhere, it's a bad idea to remap the 2.7, as the gearbox is already at the maximum of it's power threshold, which is why I've not done the same with my RRS. It'll be interesting to see if that's the case. Please keep us posted.
the zf6hp26 is ran in the XR6 Turbo which pump out a large amount of power and torque with a basic remap and trans tune compared to our landy's, the biggest drama with these transmissions is the owner neglecting them which detroys the Torque converter over time. It might just be people remapping there car with an already unhealth trans
yep… but only issue is I have the 17 inch wheels that restricts disc size. I like the 17’s as it allows for a larger profile tyre that are better off road.
Especially on modern diesels where the accelerator is not a linear input. 8th of the throttle is more likely about a 3rd. Most modern diesels are made like this to make the normal performance feel better and more responsive. It can leave drivers disappointed when you put your foot down and it doesn’t go much quicker though.
Well that's why I don't buy diesel cars plus LR never offered one. I have a 2008 Discovery 3 SE V8 installed a Super Sprint cat back exhaust and a K&N drop in air filter and what a difference it makes.
This is one big thing putting me off considering a remap. Not to worry anyone, I know it's not every engine anyway, but an engine known for struggling with its job out of the factory isn't in my mind best suited for tweaking to get more. We don't even like to drive ours hard as standard just to be safe.
Nope - condition and maintenance is far more important than mileage! Some low mileage cars have not had the love attention they need, while high mileage cars have have the kitchen sink thrown at them.
it’s doing really well, averaging about 27mpg, which I think is good considering all the mods. I took it on a trip around wales 400 miles that included about 4 hours off road, still averaged 25mpg
Hmm, re-mapping … interesting, appears to be all good there then. But on the basis that we don’t get something for nothing, I wonder are there any downsides? I always ask why the manufacturer doesn’t tune this way initially, is it maybe due to excessive fuel consumption or inability to meet emissions targets, or indeed a shortened service life? Is re-mapped equivalent to the old term ‘chipped’. A pal of mine had his Audi A4 chipped, which went somewhat quicker, right up to the point where his turbo blew up less than a year later. I have a Discovery 4, so am interested to learn about your results longer term.
It’s down to emissions. Manufacturers tune their engines to the best optimal and most importantly best emissions levels. Hence the old diesel gate issues that VW kicked off. If you always consider mates saying they got such good mpg from their tdi vw I was always amazed….. with good reason.
The Disco 4 uses the SDV6 engine, the same engine that used to be used in the Disco 5. in the D4 is puts out 255hp and 600nm, in a D5 305 hp and nearly 700nm exact same engine, gearbox, transfer box, everything. You can easily tune the D4 up without worry.

I’m nervous about remap. I have a new engine but I always think you are adding stress on other components like the turbo and the gearbox. If it new a new car I wouldn’t be so concerned but at 15…
Obviously the drivetrain will be under a bit more stress but the engine will actually not work as hard as it is more poweful after a remap. I've remapped lots of my own cars and they always ride so much smoother and seem so much less strained after remapping them.
i was told if you remap the 2.7 tdv6 the torque converter cant handle the extra torque from the remap and makes the auto gearbox go into limp mode from too much strain.

Early d4 with 245bhp had the same gearbox.
Would rather say the extra stress on the crank will be more of a problem.

As for brakes. Put the RRS caliper carriers on and the bigger disks. Works like a charm and cost effective :)
