  • Here is part 1 of 2 in a series documenting my entry in to our That 70's Build. I am building the Tamiya Pak 40 from 1975. In this video I go through the sprues and instructions and finish assembly.
    Part 2 will deal with priming, base paint and all weathering.

    Anyone looking to building this I have a couple of pointers.
    First when building the trail base note the right hand pic (where you fit the trail base shield and shovel)the base has been inverted (turned upside down) and so the shield fits on upside down.
    Second when you come to fit the trail arm lifting handles (parts 20 and 24) it is much easier to detach the handle(20) and clip that onto the mounting (24) before you cut the mount from the sprue that way you won't spend 1/2 hr on your knees searching for it like I did in the carpet monsters stomach.
    Thirdly.when fitting the main shield to the gun carriage offer the shield up then slide the gun barrel off its mount but keep it going through the shield you can then manoeuvre the "movable"section of the shields bottom two tabs into position under the barrel not forgetting to remount the barrel.

    When this kit appeared, it was actually very good representation of PaK 40. It had obvious problems, comparing to today's standards, but with a simple change of a barrel, it looked pretty amazing. I have very fond memories of building and painting several of them for me and my friends and what I like the most about the old Tamiya kits is they always put the crew figures in the box.

    I've built a boat load of these. and loved them. crew needed work but after removing all belts and straps, added toothpaste tube straps, they even started to look up. really cool adam.

      +Clayton McClain Thanks very much. It does seem like the crew will need some serious love if I do them up.

    I got nearly done with this kit....once...the wheel broke off. This is really a very high skill kit, you can build anything if you can complete it error free.

    i actually love these old Tamiya kits. modern kits intimidate me. (besides if kit ends bad, i blame the kit)

    Congrats. I purchased the same kit in 1997: lovely kit, really nicely done. Building it was a pleasure. It may seems complicated but it is not at all. Tamiya did a great job here.

    I kinda like those Tamiya figures. They are efortless to build and they add a lot to the kit. And fit quality is great in Tamiya.

    Good kit for the nostalgia build. Love the Tamiya Pak 40 kit.....true classic build. Hope you do the crew. Shep Paine once said...."A good paint job can improve a marginal figure." Have fun.

    Cheap kit, fun build, 'nuff said.
    I built this back in the day and had fun. (As said above.)
    Too many rivet counters ruin it for us fun builders.

    This was my first Tamiya kit that I purchased back in 1976. They need to make a Pak 38 as well. Many of these are in gun emplacements on the Normandy beaches.

    Most excellent Adam! Nicely done sir very clean build. Many people assume that the Pak 40 and KwK 40 were the same gun this is of course completely false. The Pak 40 was actually substantially more powerful than the KwK 40 and the ammunition was not interchangeable. The KwK had bottle neck cases and used lower pressure ammunition. The Pak 40's ammo was straight walled and longer allowing for more propellant charge.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TacticalJackalope Thanks Andy. Yeah it's a much more powerful gun, even looks meaner. I know they had it in the Marder II and some other SPs, but mostly you KWKs in tanks.

    For anyone, like myself, who has this kit, great review Adam. The artillery piece itself looks good. However, when I go to build it, I'm inclined to get a Dragon (or other more detailed) crew.

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gary Armstrong Thanks you. I totally understand about the crew. Actually Dragon made a great kit with a crew of the Pak 40 with metal parts and all that. Apparently it's slightly out of scale but can be picked up pretty cheap if you hunt for it.

    • @GaryArmstrongmacgh
      @GaryArmstrongmacgh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Adam Mann I like the fact that you described this kit, as far as the Pak 40 itself, as being one of the better ones out. This even despite it's age. To me, that's makes it worth investing in a really nice crew. Dragon perhaps! Cheers...nice making your acquaintance.

    nicely done, i think you did good work on the gun barrel so once its painted one will not see that it is plastic. it saved you some money for an aluminium barrel for sure :) looking forward to the next part.

    I have a few of these Pak40 kits in the stash plus some Pak36/37 kits. The Tamiya Pak36/37 actually beats the Dragon Pak36 in the fact it has the correct ammo and ammo box versus the ones offered in the Dragon kit. LOL

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Creator It was a little harder than I expected honestly. Due to the many moving parts you have to be kind of careful. The kit is cheap though, so if you mess it up it's like $5 for a new one. So it was fun yeah, but surprisingly more complicated.

  • @richardc-ex7rt

    I got the old Tamiya German Assault Troops Infantry and I noticed that all the figures were much like the way you described them here, cartoonish and comedic, sort of like Bolt Action figures. Is this consistent with all their figure kits?

    • @AdamMann3D
      @AdamMann3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ethan Ton Only their very old kits from the 1970's. If you look at some of their boxings even from the mid 80's they are much better.

    These old kits with rubbish barrels are fine for 'knocked-out' dioramas where it is so messed up and rusty that you don't see the misaligned halves.
