Great lesson again emphasizing that the turn comes from the shoulder and turning the body through. Too many players want to break their wrist at impact which is totally counterproductive. Roger Federer and still to this day Ken Rosewall are the two best slice backhands.
For conventional Rosewall is still probably the best. .

"How to hit your slice backhand like Ken Rosewall", you mean. The backswing you demonstrate is straight back and very linear.
With Fed's, his hand and racket are up high around the height of the top of his head, and he brings the racket viciously down. This creates much higher rpm and is what makes his slice backhand superior.

Hi Ron, Thanks for your feedback and contribution to the video. I agree with your observation,. My slice is more classic. Roger's is certainly unique and quite different than most. I was at Indian Wells two weeks ago and studied Grigor Dimitrov's slice, which is more classic than RF. While Roger does get more backspin, it lacks the penetration and skipping quality of a "knifing slice" or "chip slice". RF does add sidespin, which is effective on approach shots and drop shots. Best, John

Fantastic!! I love the discussion of the racket face at preparation for a beginner vs an advancing player...

VG video - I subbed. I like the distinction between modern and traditional slice. The sound is slightly muffled - see if you can make that crisp.

Though I'm a rightie, I'm working on my left-handed backhand slice so as to deceive my opponent. Do you think it will work in an actual match? Thanx for your reply in advance, Coach.

The title should be how "I" hit a backhand slice, not how Federer hits one. You have your racket face pointed skyward and Federer has the face pointing toward his ear. Ridiculous.

Thanks for your comment. The title could be more accurately reflect the lesson. However, the key points of the lesson are the fundamental concepts that Federer features on the slice, not the style.

hmm... i like what i hear, i don't like what i see. the preparation and the path before contact the way it is presented makes in my understanding floating slice most of the time. contact and after the contact - all good.
