Specifically this devlog has given me 3000% more respect for you. I love the transparency, I have worked in tech fields my entire life and the "it could take 20 mins or 4 days" type of thing is so, so real. People don't understand that. But especially when it comes to GAMES. Some people have no idea what all goes into creating a multifaceted program. Game dev is not just level design and player movement scripts. But I really appreciate the transparency in this devlog. I am beyond excited for the day I can play SoR2 in it's intended state.
Dude I couldn't believe I saw you in some random episode on TV. The "Man-Up" show LOL. You were hilarious and it made me like you even more. Thank you for the constant communication, and trust me when I tell you I'll be there to purchase day 1! Wouldn't it be wise to open up preorders as well? Better to get some cash going, rather than wait for release.
Health and family is very important, I want the game out bad sure, but dude your health and your family is way more important to most of us. Stay safe brother. -Sincerely a random nobody
Glad to see you're still working on it. I tried the demo when it came out and I was one of those people whose excitement was damped a lot. Put it a way for several weeks and tried it again after a few more patches had been released. It was a lot more enjoyable. Still needs a lot of work like you said, but I'm glad you're still chugging through it! Hope it turns out the way you want it.
14:17 I've had to deal with getting sick when looking at my PC too, some tips: - Fix sleep schedule (wake up at the same time every day), I had to resort to an alarm clock, but it's worth it. - Lower the brightness of your monitor to a medium/low amount. - Make sure your glasses and pupillary distance is correct (you need a more and more precise PD whenever you update your prescription). - Be sure your room has good lighting (warm color temperature lightbulb with a medium brightness). I was getting wrecked by headaches/nausea/eyestrain because I'm in front of my PC 16 hours a day. But I'm good now.
I am absolutely having a BLAST with Street of Rogue 1, the fact that I can get with up to four friends and couch co-op that shit is amazing. I love your work dude Cant wait for 2 now that I see all this hard work being poured in.
I wish more devs were as open and transparent as this. It's literally only the second time I've encountered one on YT and thought "I could listen to this guy talk all day about what he's making"
It's really awesome to see a developer not abusing the goodwill they've built up. Fantastic communication and looking forward to early access when it's ready
matt, i've sunk in a LOT OF hours on street of rogue, and i've always been impressed at how bug free and polished the game felt your work ethic deserves recognition we all love you HYPED for the sequel
We completely understand and thank you for being transparent and open with the community!! Enjoy your family and live life, time is too short!! When this game is finished/ready I know my wife and i will enjoy it among countless others also!!!
You can do it ;D Don't let unnecessary negative opinions bring you down. And by the way, you're not the only one who puts in a lot of effort over a long period of time. There are Dwarf Fortress and Kenshi as examples, just to name a few. So my friend, don't let yourself get dragged down, you're doing well. Because you are one of the developers who really thinks about it and says no, I don't like it that way, I have to change it. I played the first game a lot and had a lot of fun. I like you Matt. Stay strong brother
Hey Matt! I was really hyped for the release in october this year, and I was super happy to have a Demo. The story how you pushed things out and got sick is terrible. Take care of yourself! To give you feedback: Yes, it was worth it to release the demo even if the game "was not ready yet". It showed that the game will be amazing - not dampening any enthusiasm on my side - and that its not finished yet. So take your take and make it great. WRESTLE THAT BEAR, C'MON! Appreciate you and your work.
What you do as a predominantly solo dev is really inspiring. Doing all that and raising a family! As someone who dabbles in hobby game dev, watching SoR1 and 2 has been one of my benchmarks for what is possible with time and dedication. Looking forward to SoR2, really enjoyed the demo so far.
While I do want the game to come out I hope you take your time. Felt bad seeing you talk about getting sick and working for days straight. I play on PS4 anyway so no matter what I got a lot of waiting ahead of me. Best of luck Matt.
Hey, Matt, I don't know if you read all of these, but Streets of Rogue is one of my favorite games ever, you are one of my favorite developers in the indie scene, and what you've done here is a great influence to me in my own journey as a solo indie dev. I love the level of emergent gameplay you're able to squeeze out of the systems you've designed, and I've always felt that SoR, as a sort of rogue-lite immersive sim, was kinda awe-inspiring to play considering how many little interactions there are. With SoR2 being so much bigger, I hope you take all the time you need to see your vision through.
A rushed game is forever bad, a delayed game is eventually good - Shigeru Miyamoto Take your time, my guy! SOR1 was genuinely one of if not my favorite game of all time, and ever since I heard about SOR2 I've been looking forward to it. You have a loyal fanbase who will enjoy the game whenever it's ready, make sure you take time for yourself and your family too!
I tried the demo back when it released and I could definitely tell it was very early and didn't have a ton of meat on the bones yet, but I'm still excited for the proper early access launch and I know you've got what it takes to make it a great game.
Great to hear behold the scene story of your development, it seems so many devs do say it takes at least two times more time than they originally plan. Excited for your game and coop gameplay! Keep it up 👍
No point in rushing something that isn't ready yet. It will only make everyone unhappy. Making software is hard, so take the time that is needed to reach a state where it is what you want to release.
Brother, i am more excited for your game than GTA 6. You nailed the first one so hard with different character mechanics, the world you're building now is much more expansive, i understand the stress to make it reactive to so much stuff, specially considering that if you don't it would be downgrade from the first one. These dev vlogs are good to keep us aware that you are taking it seriously because we all know the potential your gem has and don't want it mistreated even if its from the creator. Happy holidays, as long as you guarantee that by the end of 2025 we will be having the early access i think its fine.
I enjoyed the demo and I think most people understand that the role of it was to showcase what the game is intended to be and I think it did a great job at that. You've already built up plenty of good will from the community rightfully so for how you care about what you're doing. Most importantly; take care of yourself, man. It's better to take your time and indulge your passion at a pace that doesn't compromise your passion in the form of burnout. Spend plenty of time with your family, the computer, project, and fans, will be there when you're ready. Much love, and thanks for sharing your dream ❤
Fellow game dev here - people really don't understand that time estimation is the HARDEST part of making any software. It's not the algorithms or the architecture, it's figuring out if it's going to take an hour to implement a feature or two months. I know how you feel with those 24hr crunch nights, lol. Been there myself. I'll be waiting patiently for SOR2 - much respect for your hard work so far and I can see massive potential in the project even in this early state!
I loved SOR1 and while the SOR2 demo didn't make the best impression on me, I am still all in on SOR2. I'll be buying it as soon as it hits early access. I was around from SOR1 only had 1 area and 3 levels. I trust you and I know that no matter what, you're going to make this game amazing in the end.
The roadmap has some pretty exciting features listed, even if it is subject to change and some may seem a bit too ambitious, though I have faith. Some features that stuck out to me: Being able to have great influence in a city once you become mayor (or later president) seems really cool. I know this won't be a city builder, but being able to shape the city by placing buildings or being able to pass laws or proclamations that have an effect on everything within the city seems like a neat idea. Like maybe you could take over a run-down city and then be able to make it prosperous, or maybe you can use your position as a mayor to help a certain faction, like legalize crime for the mafia, outlaw a certain faction hostile to the one you favor, or maybe do some crazy stuff like being able to legalize or outlaw slavery or cannibalism. I could see players get really attached to "their" cities. I also appreciate how the game doesn't have to end once you become president and there will be a "post-game". Being able to create your own faction also seems like a really cool idea and if the existing factions serve as templates there could be a lot of variety, like starting your own cult, starting your own crime organization or becoming a private military force, etc. Having many different professions/classes is also great, I hope that each gets lots of unique content to give them lots of flavor, like how in the demo as a cook you could work at a restaurant and such, or in this video we see a police arrest someone and bring them into a station to be processed. In SoR1 the classes which offered a distinct gameplay style or had unique mechanics were the most fun imo. For vehicles, I do wonder if we will get military vehicles, such as a tank. Flying vehicles would be difficult to implement, but could be cool too (the Alien could get a UFO). Campers as a sleeping spot could even be expanded to be a mobile based (which is far more limited than a stationary of course), perhaps larger ships could do the same? Like if you are able to own a Yacht or something later on. If players can get a bounty and be hunted by bounty hunters, that could be the basis for a bounty hunter class, though I suppose in practice it would be similar to the police.
People are really going crazy on the Steam forum about delays. Did this have a Kickstarter or something? I'm looking forward to this game but I haven't paid any money or anything yet so they don't owe me anything. I'll buy it and play it when it is done. There are plenty of other games to play in the meantime.
Hey Matt, take your absolute time and don't push yourself too hard. The game looks fantastic and the demo certainly solidifies that. The first Streets of Rogue is one of the best games out there and the second one as you said, will be ready when it's ready. It's a day 1 buy and good things are worth waiting for.
I played the alpha demo and I liked what you had, though it was clear there was more work necessary to bring all the ideas to life. My biggest shock was going from the progression of the first game with floors and biomes to this open-world map. I always felt like I was looking for the exit, which was difficult across such a huge map. I'm excited for the game and I hope you take all the time you need for it.
I've been eagerly awaiting this game since it was talked about in hush tones in the SOR1 update steam posts. It's still one of my most anticipated games at the moment and I'm grateful for being able to test it out in the demo which was fun but understandably content-sparse. Please don't worry too much about what impatient Gamers(tm) have to say about you mostly solo developing a huge game like this and not having it come out tomorrow or whatever. Just look after your health and do what you can in a timescale that works for you.
I'm really not even disappointed with the demo. I think it's a good showcase of the huge potential of Streets of Rogue 2. I'm excited for the early access and I WILL be buying it.
I've been a fan since the free demo days of Streets of Rogue 1. I can't wait to play the Early Access release of SoR 2! It's very different, which makes it stand out a lot from the first game. It'll take time to come together just like SoR 1 did, so I will wait patiently for that day!
Really appreciate this update. I enjoyed the Nextfest Demo but also get why some online gaming buddies didn't. I admittedly had much more fun with the demo when I decided to ignore the tutorial quests about building stuff and just loaded up on a bunch of weapons and stormed the Mayor's office. Likewise various side quests where different npc factions hit each other with stray fire and caused a blockwide brawl brought out some of the best of the first game. For me, there's clearly something special in the combo of the more persistent elements of the sequel combined with the emergent chaos of the first. I just think new players need to get to enjoy the latter sooner
I've read the roadmap, and the only thing i didn't like was the 10 saves slot for characters. This say a lot of how the new stuff seems pretty good and i really hope the game release in a good state, since the first was a solid 10 out of 10.
I would love to hear Matt’s reason on why haven’t him hiring programmer for him yet. Years of working on SoR2 must be very exhausting for a solo programmer. Let’s hope 2025 is a smooth ride for SoR2’s development.
It's just how I've always done it. I like getting my hands in everything, and I like knowing how everything works. I also just prefer to work by myself most of the time. I will say that the scope of this project and also having a family has made it tougher to keep on that trajectory. I'm not opposed to having others help out with something like external mod tools.
Streets of Rogue is my 2nd most played game of all time (currently at 500 hours as of writing this) and I am already in love with SoR2 from the demo alone, please feel free to take as long as necessary to make it.
I feel like my first impressions of SoR2 are best contrasted with my first impressions of Shadows of Doubt. When I first played SoD, I was left with excitement, but also a kind of nagging concern. While the outward appearance and presentation was really enjoyable, the systems seemed a lot more shallow than I had initially anticipated. I think I expected a complex simulation that the player would participate in, but upon actually playing things, I got the distinct impression that the underlying mechanisms would be a lot more rigid and authored than I would have liked. I think my initial concerns were eventually proven correct - While I still like SoD, I don't think it lived up to my expectations. It's a lot more shallow a game than I would have liked. The SoR2 demo had me feeling very differently. I won't lie - there was a degree of disappointment. Rough around the edges, low on content, kind of aimless. But unlike SoD, I can see the underlying work. I can see the infrastructure, and the components. I understand the hesitation, and I understand the early optimism. SoR2 very much feels like the kind of game that's going to come together in the final hour as everything starts falling into place and the systems start overflowing and mixing into each other. I'm guessing that you, as the developer, can see that a lot easier than most players can. But you're also probably not going to know when that final cascade is going to happen until it actually starts, so things might feel pensive for a while. Keep faith. It'll come together in time. Good luck, and God speed.
take your time isaw streets of rouge one and got interested in it the i herd about the second game and loved the demo and the road map Souds Rally exiting i cant wait all good things come to those that wait
Thank you for taking your time with such a beautiful idea/game. Focus on your mental health, family and friends so you don't get burned out brother!
I'd rather have a finished product late than an unfinished one on time. Thank you for keeping us informed. 😁
We appreciate you Matt! Take as much time as you need.
So hyped and happy you're waiting until it's ready.
Thank you for being awesome, Matt.
Help the man make his vision a reality!
The demo shows sooo much potential! I'm excited as hell but patiently waiting for early access!
Really appreciate the full roadmap - incredible communication as always
The game will be ready when its ready and i will be ready to buy it whenever that is. Great log. Good luck developing!

Take your time and don't forget to rest well too
Keep up the good work! Still super excited for the game. But don't stress yourself over a time limit XD
The best game is a game not rushed!
Keep cooking, Matt! It'll be ready when it's ready. It'll be worth the wait
Respect for taking your time. Building a game is like building a house, if the foundation isn't solid nothing else will be.
Dude I couldn't believe I saw you in some random episode on TV. The "Man-Up" show LOL. You were hilarious and it made me like you even more. I'm glad to hear from the dev. I love streets of rogue one enough to know that what you're doing is ambitious and shouldn't be rushed.
Health and family is very important, I want the game out bad sure, but dude your health and your family is way more important to most of us. Stay safe brother.

Take all the time you need Matt, as long as you keep us in the loop I'm happy.

I've had to deal with getting sick when looking at my PC too, some tips:
- Fix sleep schedule (wake up at the same time every day), I had to resort to an alarm clock, but it's worth it.
I love your work dude

A well cooked meal is what I am waiting for....not a half cooked mess, take your time. Best wishes!
omg I feel that dig at Daikatana personally, I was let down the same way :D
It's really awesome to see a developer not abusing the goodwill they've built up. Fantastic communication and looking forward to early access when it's ready
matt, i've sunk in a LOT OF hours on street of rogue, and i've always been impressed at how bug free and polished the game felt
your work ethic deserves recognition we all love you
HYPED for the sequel
We completely understand and thank you for being transparent and open with the community!! Enjoy your family and live life, time is too short!! When this game is finished/ready I know my wife and i will enjoy it among countless others also!!!
I'm happy to see another devlog, I'm gonna play SOR while waiting SOR2
You can do it ;D
Don't let unnecessary negative opinions bring you down.
Take as long as you need. Your fans are with you.
Keep it up, can't wait!
Absolutely don't mind waiting for a product that works! Thanks for the update!
A wise choice sir! It is ready when it is ready!
Thank you for the update + the road map! And yes, Trello would have been excessive haha
While I do want the game to come out I hope you take your time. Felt bad seeing you talk about getting sick and working for days straight. I play on PS4 anyway so no matter what I got a lot of waiting ahead of me. Best of luck Matt.

This is perfectly fine take as long as you need Matt….we can wait
A rushed game is forever bad, a delayed game is eventually good - Shigeru Miyamoto

expect for all the delayed games that were ass
Keep it going. Appreciate your work =)
Glad to see things are progressing at a smooth rate, you're doing a great job, keep on cookin Matt! I look forward to when this game is ready to go!
I tried the demo back when it released and I could definitely tell it was very early and didn't have a ton of meat on the bones yet, but I'm still excited for the proper early access launch and I know you've got what it takes to make it a great game.

still very hyped about this game
I liked the demo. But you need to take your time on making what you want to. we'll be here to buy it when that happens. :)
Heck ya, dude! Thanks for the update.
I'd rather you do the work and let it release when you're stoked on it! No disappointment here!!!
Cant wait for the console release. Streets 1 was one of my favorites.
I enjoyed the demo and I think most people understand that the role of it was to showcase what the game is intended to be and I think it did a great job at that. Thanks for working on the game
Now when it releases just take my money
Loved the first game, super excited for #2, good luck with release! It will be a day 1 buy for me, the demo was fun.
Will this be adapted for the Saturn console?

Is the rumour of the Earthworm Jim unlockable true?
Pixel art GTA. Can't wait, looks very fun!
Can you play classic sega games from within the base game?
When will this feature be added, I didnt see it in the update.
Be happy to play this when its done, not before. Because holy heck have I enjoyed the first so darn much.
Ay man with how fun SoR is, please take all the time you need to cook. This gonna be a day one purchase!
I hope the cities become a lot more compact so there aren't massive 5 to 8 tile wide sidewalks.
The roadmap has some pretty exciting features listed, even if it is subject to change and some may seem a bit too ambitious, though I have faith.

Nope, we didn't have a kickstarter (or patreon, for that matter)
Hey Matt, take your absolute time and don't push yourself too hard. The game looks fantastic and the demo certainly solidifies that. The first Streets of Rogue is one of the best games out there and the second one as you said, will be ready when it's ready. It's a day 1 buy and good things are worth waiting for.

can't wait to buy this game and play it, but i can wait for it to be ready to play :D keep being awesome!
Nice explanation, feel good about game, I expect EA mid-Spring now. :)
Also - transparency is the key for gamers who wait releases or updates.
Also, where can I find some sailors? I hear they hang out at the jazz bar down the road.
Everyone knows how good this games gonna be a masterpiece and worth the wait !

Played the demo for a day when it came out, had my fun and now patiently wait. Take your time, I know it'll be great :)
We're so excited for the game to come out, whenever it gets here. LET HIM COOK!❤❤❤
I'm really not even disappointed with the demo. I think it's a good showcase of the huge potential of Streets of Rogue 2. I'm excited for the early access and I WILL be buying it.
Looking forward to this. Great game.
I've been a fan since the free demo days of Streets of Rogue 1. I can't wait to play the Early Access release of SoR 2! It's very different, which makes it stand out a lot from the first game. It'll take time to come together just like SoR 1 did, so I will wait patiently for that day!
Esse jogo vai ser incrível para mim, espero que a tradução do jogo funcione bem e não faltando nada como teve na DLC do 1
As a dad myself, the moment you mentioned having kids was when I went "Ahhh, it all makes sense, now."
7:33 Is your refrigerator running?
It is!
The game looks amazing. I'm not sure if this makes sense but it looks like what my memory claims those good old games looked like.
Please don’t feel the need to rush or anything. I played what’s available on Steam and it looks great.

THIS... IS... SPARTA !!!
Sorry, I couldn't resist after your intro... 😢
I've read the roadmap, and the only thing i didn't like was the 10 saves slot for characters. This say a lot of how the new stuff seems pretty good and i really hope the game release in a good state, since the first was a solid 10 out of 10.
thanks for your feedback, noted
I would love to hear Matt’s reason on why haven’t him hiring programmer for him yet. Years of working on SoR2 must be very exhausting for a solo programmer.
Let’s hope 2025 is a smooth ride for SoR2’s development.
It's just how I've always done it. I like getting my hands in everything, and I like knowing how everything works. I also just prefer to work by myself most of the time. I will say that the scope of this project and also having a family has made it tougher to keep on that trajectory. I'm not opposed to having others help out with something like external mod tools.
You have Bully McGuire hair
Yessss new devlog, best day ever :D
I was mad when the game didn’t come out. But I get it. I’d rather get a better experience. Cannot wait for the release
Streets of Rogue is my 2nd most played game of all time (currently at 500 hours as of writing this) and I am already in love with SoR2 from the demo alone, please feel free to take as long as necessary to make it.
Never played the original but this looks fantastic.
Cool!!!
I always prefer devs who just say “it’s ready when it’s ready” over giving a guess then saying “whoops, not long enough, wait another month.”
game is looking awesome and this was an appreciated breakdown, very relatable!
