This was the first car i owned and it made me fall in love with Japanese design. I'm buying one this week at Auction to bring back to life because they are great vehicles. Thanks for this great video.
This by far, was the best handling and best looking compact back in the early 2000s. I had one of these and 2 years later, I bought a 2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege - both brand new. Had lots of fun driving both of them.
@@JasonSevillaMusic so far I have got a radio with back up camera, coil overs, wheels and tires, aftermarket headlights, 22mm rear sway bar, and some poly urethane motor mounts from AWR.
Thanks for posting this. Only available for two model years in the U.S. Super sleeper. I owned a red 2003. It always put a smile on my face... and that's with no mods. Loved this car. Unfortunately, I was rear-ended while stopped in traffic and that totaled it, bent frame. I replaced it with a 2015 3 hatchback. It's quieter and more fuel efficient, but doesn't handle or feel as good as the P5.
Dude omg I love my Honda’s but when I see something different like this brings a huge smile on my face. Funny cuz when I first got into cars my buddy had one of these and we swore we would make it fast lol never did this thing is badass props to the owner. And much love from Sac Cali to automotive anatomy! ❤️🤛🏽
That things dope. My cousin had a Mazda 3 when I was a kid and I was one of those guys who wanted one! Still think they are badass and this confirms that! Beauty build man!
To be honest I have always secretly thought these cars were badass. It was just a shame that they never really caught on in the scene and the aftermarket backing was lacking at best. I would love to see more of them done properly like this one on the road.
i got one today for 3,200 with 140k miles, my first car !! the exterior needs some work but its nothing that cant be fixed, so excited to start working on it :DD
I bought my 1997 Mercury Tracer wagon new, 23 yrs ago. It was the first year of the Ford/Mazda collaboration. Looked sexy, (especially with the metallic red paint), so I immediately modded it up with MazdaSpeed components that bolted right on. And the engine was built by Cosworth racing just for 3 years. Then it sat for 15yrs. NOW, here I am 23 years later reviving my Glorified Grocery Getter. Pablo pointed out so many details that I'll be able to use , and get my car performing and looking like nothing else on the road.
@Automotive Anatomy. Props on this video and clean and one of the many rare, redheaded stepchild cars in the scene. We need more of these kinds of cars man. I have always thought of getting one in yellow but I am a Honda guy first off but I love seeing these different builds. Keep up the good work!
Oh my God its beautiful 😍 I have to say . Congrats 👏 I have one it used to my wife's car , she passed away on 2020 and it holds a strong sentimental value , im remodeling it as best I can in her honor .thanks for sharing this vid with me very much appreciated. 🙋♂️ zoom zoom 🏁🏁🏁😎👍
Beautiful 5, Pablo. I have a sedan and I'm doing an identical mechanical build. Was contemplating going turbo myself, but there's something about keeping it NA and dailying it. They are lovely little cars
Bought mine in March of '03. Stereo, window tint, lowering springs, wheels were all done by the end of that summer. Made some life long friends over the following 2-3 years that I see for a few events a year still, even though most of us don't own Mazdas anymore. I drove that car to 100k miles but when the rust bubbles started forming around the wheel arches and rear hatch, I replaced it with a Mazdaspeed6. I'd buy another one for sure, but only if I could find a clean low mile example in laser blue or yellow (or possibly a spicey orange MSP).
The handling of these BJ series Mazdas is AMAZING. I have the non-turbo 1.8 Ford Laser KQ SR (Basically a Protege but Ford badged) with Gabriel Shocks on stock springs on 17x7.5" rims and it's a blast around the twisties, not exaggerating.
This was the first car I bought to just have fun in. It was crazy modded which took a little getting used to, but 6 years later she's still my favorite drive.
Wow that's an awesome car. I Love it. I've had 3 since 03 and have had at least one ever since. I still have 2 one I'm building, the other one does parts. This video was inspiring.
Very nice very well made and well taken care of. Thank you for representing mazda well (3 owner here) Mazda is an undercover Honda in the community, in many ways haha
Join us in the various facebook groups. My favorites are the club Protege5 and mazdaspeed protege enthusiasts. There's quite a few classifieds pages where you can find parts as well
Man i really miss my Protege 5 (P5) and it was exactly the same color as well!! And had 246,XXX miles on the cluster all original motor/transmission!! The best daily car I ever owned!! Maybe I would buy another one and build it!!
Gonna be doing a fairly similar build, got my hands on a MSF FS-ZE, only 209 car were made. Gonna be going into my 2003 SP20 Astina. Super hyped about it. Will be my daily still and be a weekend warrior on the track.
such a great video! always love the interviews. my buddy daily drives his mazda protege mp3 up here in canada through winter even though it's 1:1000 rare.
I once had a 2002 protege ES - was such a fun car - did the manual swap on mine from Auto to Man - and protege 5 bumpers, sideskirts.... painted interiors, engine bay, engine - not much for performance other then header, exhaust and intake.... and want one again
I had four of them. Now left two of this great cars. Both are 2.0 and one is with original Sportive package. Love this cars! I drove with many cars but they just make some unique connection. Many many work and new parts and now me and my girlfriend have everyday a big pleasure to hit the road 🤘😎. Smoking oil is typical for them ...unfortunately. Piston rings are rubbish and when you floor it it takes carbon deposit on them . Wary fragile for oil quality and frequency of changing it.
My '03 is dark blue. And it was well-optioned also--leather, CD changer, chromed wheels, sunroof, safety package (ABS and side airbags). I put aftermarket taillamp clusters on which are mostly black, I HATE red so the stockers had to go. 5 speed of course, I'm running 5 cars, no slushboxes in sight (and that includes the two projects in the shop). And if you're a car guy, please pronounce Re-neau properly.
Its been a little over a year since I had to Get rid of mines and everyday I regret it. I love the cars background very similar to mines almost down to the T. Great vid🖤🤟🏿
Found this video cuz I'm searching to buy one again.. my first modded car when I was a teen.. I loved this car even tho I was a dumb kid. I miss this car, I had the same color one also.
Like so many of you this was the first car I bought too. Another victim of the front-end seduction. Got a lot of miles out of mine. I still miss rowing through the gears and flicking its light frame around tight corners.
Update, hit 55,000 miles. Still no issues other than a vacuum seal leak I had fixed earlier this year AND my wife brushed my front bumper with her Subaru 🥴
Miss my Protege5, literally his exact setup except I had a ported 626 intake manifold, and a ssafc to tune the air fuel, made 192hp na, went turbo and blew it cause the weak rods 😂 regret ever getting rid of it. They are fun low hp daily that ride on rails In the corners.
@@asylumville8544 wasn't just a ported intake manifold, the the fsze has higher compression pistons, larger cams, also had larger valves along with the head being port matched aswell, I did pretty much everything I could to make 192hp. Only a 22hp gain over stock for a lot more money than I'd like to admit 🤣
My ex girlfriend had this same car it was even the same color, but hers had a sunroof. it was definitely a fun car to drive and felt really planted. Ive been wanting to get a yellow one for years now.
Majority of the motors that came out of Japan actually are fs-ze (high compression motor), mostly came out of the Mazda familia sport20 models, which looks almost identical to the protege5, with the tiptronic transmission or some manual.

This guy knows his stuff. Props to him and his build. I'm a honda guy and I was more interested in this video then honda lol
It just needs a kswap 😂
these are heavily slept on! especially with the turbo'd sedan setup slapped in a wagon

I’ve got a yellow one I’m building for pretty much the same purpose he built his. Found this video from IG. Gonna put a lot of time into it.

I haven’t done any performance mods but i upgraded the stereo system
