  • Hey gang! Today we try a beer from Brouwerij St. Bernardus, located in Watou, Vlaanderen Belgium. This is their Abt 12 which is a belgian quadrupel and comes in at 10% abv. The description is as follows:
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery.
Abbey ale brewed in the classic 'Quadrupel' style of Belgium's best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excells because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite.
(10,0% ABV) Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It's a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter and sweet.
One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.
Many thanks to Silvain for providing this beer for us!

I love this beer and you guys definitely did it justice. I am glad you mentioned banana because I just had a Westy 12 and off camera I started getting that and was mad that I picked up on it after I stopped recording. Great job, men!

We really appreciate your kind words. Always a fun time going beyond the comfort zone and reviewing styles you aren’t familiar with. I’m eager to try some other brands! Cheers 🍻

Opened up a St Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum edition 2012 a few months ago. The ten year old beer, drank flawless. Once you have an aged bottle, it is hard to drink it fresh.

I could see where age would do this justice. We will have to throw some on the shelf! Cheers 🍻

Rochefort! Just had an 8 and 10 this past weekend after not having tried it in forever. Delicious. St Bernardus always knocks it out of the park too.

We will have to get some more of the style on the channel. Between these and Hefeweizen, it’s dramatically underrated! Cheers 🍻

@@FLXBeerReviews Totally agree. Both are great styles. I recently got some Saison DuPont in can after years of having it only in a bottle and holy crap. It was of course good in the bottle but seems so much fresher out of the can. Definitely worth a try if you haven’t had it in a while as well.

Funfact: St. Sixtus Abbey, the creator and first producer of Westvleteren beers (considered many years the best in the world), made an agreement with St. Bernardus brewerie to produce the beer. But in 1992 the Trappist Association ruled that Trappist beers can be only produced inside monasteries to be considered "trappist". So, in that year, the Westvleteren beers production returned to the St. Sixtus Abbey, and the St. Bernardus brewerie started to produce the beer "St. Bernardus 12" with the same recipie than the "Westvleteren 12" beer. So, it's said that St. Bernardus 12 is a "clone" of Westvleteren 12.

This is one of the best beers in the world, and pretty well available. It's not cheap, but it's top quality. The alcohol is well hidden and there's nothing offensive about it. If you want to impress someone, serve them this.....

World class for sure. Price point is well worth the trade off indeed. The Christmas ale is quite delicious as well. Appreciate the comment! Cheers 🍻

This is my go to beer around the holidays. It’s my favorite out of all the Trappist quads (besides Westvleteren). Rochefort 10 is a good backup. Also, LOL at Mike saying they’re drinking this in the mines of Moria!

I’d like to age some and try it out. This would be really great with a hearty meal in the fall. Cheers 🍻

I see this as an outstanding, "A+" ale.
