  • Well folks, you saw me dismantle 3 years of model railroading. In this video I'll show you the re-birth of the Brown Smith Railroad - It's 3.0 and totally AWESOME! I reused the benchwork, track, and turnouts from version 2.0 and made something that I am stoked about. Take a look and tell me what you think!

    Looks great, Steve. Where that is placed gives you 2 scenes in one, instead of just the usual mountain against the wall down to the tracks. A built-in, scenic divider!

    Great work. I am soaking up every bit of info I can. FYI, I've spent the last 35yrs of my life in the wilderness engaging in very extreme rock climbing. Now that I am 60, have a grandchild, I need to dial my insanity back abit. The Worlds Greatest Hobby captivated me since my earliest years. Watching hours of videos to learn the latest tecniquies (I attempted 2 builds in the 80s before I found Rock Climbing). I've noticed a few important details are consistently overlooked by even the best modelers. I say this only because of my extensive experience in remote terrain.

    Great job Steve. Your series has given me ambition and inspiration to finally get working on mine, as It's My Railroad, were the freeing words I needed to allow me to work judgement free and try new things, because its mine! Doing that now in my slow season, and working on my own scenery presently. Love the regular guy methods as I am one too. Thanks!

      Dan, it IS your railroad! Screw the mainstream or anyone that's a nay-sayer. What matters is that you DIG what you're doing and totally enjoy the time spent. It's a hobby, not a planet saving event :) Thanks for watching, get going on that layout, and rreail-on brother!

    Hi Steve - Glad to see you have come over to our way of modelling on the other side of the pond,
    I much prefer the one level and for all the reasons you have stated my friend. Multi levels have never really caught on over here, with the small spaces we have to cope with you might have thought they would, but no.
    I think this new layout is the best you have done, loving every bit of it and the mountain with the trees on looks fantastic,
    Looking forwards to the journey with this new layout.
    All the best, Chris

    Funny thing using that paint wash is you just kind of blob it on. Then watch what happens. The lighter spots you have look like some stuff east of San Diego. It's always good when you can use structures and scenery from a previous layout. Your layout is coming along nicely.

    Bamboo Skewers: I use them for:
    1) Holding foam together
    2) Punching holes for wire
    3) Holding other stuff in place
    4) Like chopsticks to hold small pieces
    and now
    5) Place holders for trees
    Thanks for the 'How To'. I like how you started with black. I've been starting with lighter and going darker. I think I'll try it your way.

    Great job! Looks good. Personally, I would've used some of the shorter trees at the top to give a forced perspective of distance. Same way you could put a 'Z' scale building, maybe a church, on top of a hill making it appear to be off in the distance. Just my $.02 worth Hey - maybe add a fire watch tower in the "mountain forest". You never know........

    • @ItsMyRailroad

      Yeah, that was my intent which is why I started with the shorter trees. The problem was it just ended up looking like a flat top. I had to make a compromise. Thanks for watching and rail-on!

    Hi Steve.
    Just 2 quick questions. How do you get within working and reaching distance? You have a fair amount of distance from your standing area to your work area. Your repurposing of these pine trees look fantastic!. Next question is , after this scene was completed to your satisfaction, did you cover the the entire scene again with a final coat of diluted with glue spray to lock everything in? Again, this looks GREAT!!!

    Hi , got a question for ya. When you construct the buildings you have on your layouts, do you use one of those N Scale Rulers ? I am very interested in putting together some H.O. scale buildings for my future layout. Now I have heard a lot about how important it is to use one of those scale rulers when constructing the buildings. However, I don't really know how to use them. Any tips or hints for me about this ?

    • @jackheninger5471
      @jackheninger5471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get one. Absolutely essential. Get a metal one, mine is made and sold by Walthers.
      To use, HO scale - every foot mark is a number. Starts at 1 and goes up to 85, that equals 85ft. Each foot is marked by a line that equals 3 inches. You don't need anything finer then that unless you plan on entering contests. You can use the scale as a guide for cutting with an excato knife. Not sure of the spelling. Get a pack of #11 blades to go with it.

    Looks great so far Steve. How come you made your new yard so small especially now that you have so much open space?

    • @ItsMyRailroad
      @ItsMyRailroad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I think I have enough track in the yard to support what's coming up. I'll move 6-8 cars at a time into various scenes. Plus, I've got the interchange track to dump or pick up cars. Good news - all of this is set up to modify as needed so I think I'm good for now. Thanks for the comment and for watching my friend!

  • @NicksCollectableCreations
    @NicksCollectableCreations 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think you will be happier downsizing your layout. You can do the washing of the mountain with a small spray bottle. Be a lot faster than with a brush. I don't get why you do not mix brown paint in with your sculptamold it will save you so much time trying to color it plus if a gouge gets into it it wont be white. Bob Ross liked happy accidents but he painted dark to light. Earth or Dark Brown paint mixed with the plaster and then lighten afterwards.
