- High Bird Shooting returns to Jonathan's TH-cam channel in spectacular fashion with this incredible showcase of Drumlanrig Estate with expect gun Ross Neville.
Ross and Huego visited the estate at the start of November and were privileged to be the first team to experience one of the estates brand new drives.
Drumlanrig is a very private estate so we'd appreciate no posts of this film to Facebook if possible.

Having lived in the UK and shot a few of these high birds it’s hard to explain to Americans just how incredible this shooting really is. That said I hunt wild birds over a 75 lb English Setter out of the Old Hemlock Line. Hunting over a true English Setter is an incredible experience!

I enjoyed finding your shooting videos.Drumlanrig is on my bucket list. My mother was a McDowell. My ancestors are from Ardwell, Galloway, Scotland. There is a Mr. Case near Castle Douglas who l hope could get me on a shoot. We have great hunting here in B'ham,Alabama area. Look me up if you are nearby when in the U.S.A. if you like. J.

Great film but Mr Neville would do well to remember these are living creatures that we have the privilege to shoot at and the responsibility to kill cleanly. They’re not ‘targets’ and if they’re being pricked consistently then they’re too high.

Ed Ryle I was thinking exactly the same thing, I personally can't see the point in ten to one even if I could afford to, I used to say big money will keep game shooting going,,,,, I think this will be the death of it
Quite agree with your comments. Mr Neville seems a very nice sort of chap but why oh why does he have to shoot at birds this high? Is it a macho thing? Drumlanrig have to take their share of the blame when this sort of unsporting shooting goes on. Making money out of wounded birds is not what shooting is about. Birds "pricked" at the ranges (70/80 yds) talked about on this film have not a cat in hell's chance of being picked up. He's not doing the sport any favours and this sort of thing will lead to the demise of driven pheasant and partridge shooting.
I agree, from my experiences, 60 yards (a very high bird) is the limit to what i would feel comfortable that a bird can be consistently killed. Yes you can kill birds at 70, 80 and 90 yards but you definitely loose consistency in clean kills. That poses the question as to whether you should be constantly shooting at 80 yard pheasants as ballistically at this range you cannot penetrate the breast to kill (Yes a pellet to the head will kill). Although you have to be the finest of gentlemen to not shoot at that 90 yard screamer that comes over every so often!!!!

Have just been advised Briley Plasma Chokes if that is what is in Ross's Kreighoffs not tested for heavy game loads ? Designed primarily for clay target shooting.Muller Ceramics have the same specs but they do advise max loads although not exactly in ''big letters''.Maybe worth passing on to Hugo.

Great video. A different style of hunting pheasant than how we hunt in NZ. No matter what video you put up here you will always have your haters.
Keeping in mind that the camera makes everything look further away than it actually is people.
All awesome with a personal taste reservation: need a fine enhlish sxs into the hand of Ross. Johnny Goodhart set standard with his grouse shooting videos... something to beat.

Archangels for sure.Really enjoyed the show along with R & H presenting. Not sure about the logic of fibre wads on birds of this calibre.Interested to know the Plasma Choke cartridge combinations as see H slipping different cartridge in the bottom barrel from time to time.
Thanks guys. I think Ross means that plastic will soon be a thing of the past so we should all just move to fibre and deal with the issues. We agree, obviously a plastic wad creates a better seal therefore pattern but from an environmental stance they are suited to more game shoots.
Sorry I mentioned it in hindsight.Ross is inevitably right.Serious development required to address the balance.

Great days shooting I see Alex Brant and Renata Coleman there the had a mainly duck shoot over here in Ireland called humewood I spent many a good day there loading and beating along with foxing

I have to say fibre at that kind of range 1/6-1/10 is that really what it's about,maybe slightly jealous ! and I shoot a lot .is that really sporting !!there has to be a lot of pricked birds.
michael hocking not really jealous he seems like a nice guy and a fair shot but I wouldent call it sporting at 1in 10 not for me
They tend to be missed completely or hit hard if you have ever shot extreme birds with big cartridges
How come you don't let Hugo shoot a few?
Birds are too high. Better suited to a ten bore. We will only have ourselves to blame when the antis get their sights zoomed in on this type of high bird shoot. Other than that I enjoyed the video. The statement at 21.55 says it all, there is a craving for one in ten kill ratios , personally I do not like to miss 9 and shoot 1. Luck plays a major part in this video.

Maybe it's camera angles and such but it seems that they let lower birds pass while concentrating on extremely high birds. Am I seeing things or are these "high bird" shoots just that: "the higher, the better"?
Almost correct, higher the better but also they need to showcase birds within shotgun range so they can cleanly kill the birds.
Any "experienced" shot who misses that many birds is either a poor shot or the birds are out of range.

S pent years picking up with springers get back far enough behind guns and you can pick nearly all pricked birds if you have good dogs

I used to shoot, mainly Wood Pigeon and Rabbit, and I was lucky enough to be invited on a Pheasant shoot which was enjoyable, however in the end I was overcome by the expense of the exercise as I see Pigeon and Rabbit as pest control, something I am not in a position to pay for, so I mainly only go ferreting when I can get some for free. Looking at this Video was an education for me on what is right and wrong about driven birds. It seems to me that this is business and not a sport as it has been suggested many times in the video. I am not against people who can afford to shoot driven game and like to shoot, and it most certainly should be challenging, however there were lots of birds in this video going away that had been hit and that is not a good advert for shooting. While I wouldn't want to see driven game shooting band as I know full well there wouldn't be any Pheasant or Partridge etc and all the good conservation work that goes with it, I feel it is time that much more care should be taken on what is put over this channel. It must be remembered that these birds are living creatures and not just a target and should be respected.

Not to mention a 20 bore! And using 34g shells I bet. Beggars belief that you'd attempt to cleanly kill pheasants that are way out of range, but to do it with a 20 with heavy loads takes a special mentality.
I've used a 20 for over 30 years with 25g shells to good effect. However I keep them within 50 yards.
Often amongst shooting circles there is talk of that famous question “are big bags bad publicity for shooting” and to be quite honest I don’t think there’s any problem with big bags providing they go back into the food chain which we know they do. I think the real issue shooting faces is these exceptionally high bird shoots where the guns just prick bird after bird it’s inhumane and unfair to our quarry and we as a community need to regulate ourselves and get it in hand before we give fuel to antis who are looking for anything to stop us
If you use big enough shot, you’ll bring them down just as easily as a lower bird. Yes it’s harder to hit them, but if you use the correct equipment, you’ll either miss, or kill. Of course they’ll be birds which are pricked, but not many more than would be pricked on a normal shoot

Personally don’t count it as a eye wipe if you’re back gun. Not the same as if you’re in the line!
Great film. Lovely birds. Having read the comments though I sympathise. We all hate nothing more than a pricked bird. At this height, as Ross said, the margin is very small. But just think back to any snipe, woodcock, ducks, etc. rough shooting we have wounded over the years or lost on retrieve at much smaller ranges. It's a sad part of the sport - something I really struggle with some days. But the only way for a "clean" kill is an abbatoir. We don't want that. The birds deserve a chance and a life. At the end of the day when we go to shoot, we have to enjoy the sport, do what is sustainable, do our best to kill cleanly, shoot within our limits and value the meat we do retrieve. The rest is like life - tough luck at times. I think this film was respectful to the this type of sport but it is all a balance of the above to give shooting a good, quarry appreciating name. Thank you for the film that did a decent job of that.

By the looks of things, more attention should be given to average range birds and clean kills as opposed to extreme range with obviously lots of misses and pricked birds. If your not capable, don't shoot it.

Too many pricked birds just to feed the egos of a bunch of well healed that does the image of our sport no good at all.
I have to agree and I can say that from the experience of having shot at Chargot (renowned High Bird Shoot) and leasing/running two shooting estates myself. We have a responsibility to balance the challenge of a sporting bird against the duty to, within reason, cleanly kill the bird.
...and then just before 11 minutes we have the comment "........good 50 to 60 yard targets". Sorry Ross but they are not targets, they are birds......and put a tie on so you "Dress to kill".

Robert Griffin yes, in 2005 I had the misfortune of shooting at Clovelly. My first impression upon entering the estate was that it was an overstocked free range chicken farm. The birds were well beyond the ability of the casual shots that we were with, luckily my friend and I had spent two days at Royal Berkshire on the way across to the west, even so I passed up many at “Gallantry Bower” , Hanging Garden “ and “ waterfalls “ . Too much “ look at me “ at these shoots. I’m Australian and had previously restricted my UK shooting to Grouse over Irish Setters in Scotland, Woodcock over Spaniels and pigeons. I love shooting over dogs and wildfowling. Cheerio, Bob.

Like our other films we endeavour to show you a diversity of fieldsports and high bird shooting, like our other films is wildly popular. Not all agree with it, I too would be out of my depth but many like Ross aren't. This Drumlanrig day catered for a team wanting to see the very best/highest they could offer and that was what was shown. The first drive had never been done before and yes many were out of range. We hope you'll keep watching was we have so much more to show you all. Thanks again.
No wonder shooting is under constant pressure - so many birds here pricked and destined to die in agony - to suggest that, at these ranges, you are likely to kill clean or miss clean is total folly. Been shooting for 40+ years but this turns my stomach.

This isn't pleasant to watch really. I'm a syndicate shooter myself, so don't take me for a raving anti. These birds are too high and should not be being shot at, how many of the poor blighters end up dying slowly from a prick (in both senses of the word) just for some better 'sport'. It's shoots like this that will get our passion banned.
Too much talk more concentration and stop canting the gun - you will double your average. One in six is a waste of cartridges.
