  • This is the fourth video of a series taken on my five week tour of the U.S.A. in September and October 2023. In the 1930s the Rio Grande Southern Railroad was declared bankrupt and, in an effort to return to profitability, built seven Motor vehicles to replace unprofitable steam-hauled passengers services.
Motor No. 5 was built in 1933. These distinctive looking vehicles were collectively nicknamed Galloping Geese and carried passengers in the front compartment and U.S. Mail and general goods in the box section behind.
With the cancellation of the mail contract, four of the Motors were converted in 1950 to run tourist services. These services were a failed attempt to compete with road transport and lasted little more than 12 months. Fortunately Galloping Goose No. 5 was saved from the scrapheap and has been restored and maintained in operational condition by the Galloping Goose Historical Society which is based in Delores, Colorado.
No. 5 makes occasional appearances on the Durango and Silverton and Cumbres and Toltec railroads and on 27 September 2023 I rode on it from Chama to Antonito. This video records the journey.
