Great documentary. It's almost frustrating for older gamers like myself to hear people complain about the state of VR now (short experiences...not good enough...etc). Having experienced games with simple graphics from the 80's and 90's, the current tech is jaw dropping to us 80s kids.

I absolutely agree. I was one of the ones who was actually really impressed by those older VR machines when I tried them back when I was 11, so experiencing it now is incredible!

I agree. Same feeling when i see people saying that games look terrible because they are not 4k60, when i still love a good pixelart 16 color game.

I am a 90s baby and even I think the development of this tech is like woah!!! I love VR as it is now and it can only get better. There are some annoyances but it's not too bad.

I agree! It's what i am experiencing... 80s and 90s gamers are almost always blown away and overexcited after their first try.
Younger kids often go "meh... but i have to stand and turn around? And the Graphics are shit and why is it not at least 4K?"
For me It now really works! The latency is what i feared when trying out the new VR-Generation first time. And it's away - im "there" now.
I adore current VR and am so happy for being still alive to finally enjoy the beginning of my holodeck dream! I can visit others dreams - wow - thank you all Devs!

While I whole heartedly agree with how you feel being a product of the 80's and 90's myself, we need those younger people feeling things aren't good enough to push us forward.

The first video game that I tried was Pong at a party in the early 80's,and we all thought that was pretty cool. I never really thought that I would be around long enuf to see gaming as it is now. VR especially!! Watching the evolution of gaming technology throughout the last decades has been amazing to see unfold. When I was young (1960's) this was the stuff of dreams.

what's funny is when I look back, progress in video games feels like it was slow in the 90s (my childhood) but at the time it felt pretty fast. I remember the first fully 3d polygon games like x-wing, 007 golden eye, and final fantasy 7.
compared to then todays pace is *blinding* though.

  • @flexy456

The "funny" thing is that the tech itself existed for a long time already. Even back in the 90s there were VR HMDs, except that they were insanely expensive and had low resolutions and everything. You can rant about Palmer as much as you want, it was him who like so many here wondered "WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?"..because for everyone with a brain it was clear that 2D tech/monitors cannot be the future, this is 70 year old technology. It was him finally doing something and bringing VR to the masses where no-one else had an interest, even if the potential was so obvious. And now, thanks to Palmer (how ironic!) you see everyone from Google to Microsoft to Sony to facebook working on VR like mad. If there had been a smart guy back then when early VR kits cost thousands and had jumped in MUCH, MUCH earlier to bring it into mainstream, the tech now would be a lot more advanced of course. And without him, rest assured no-one would give a darn still today.

That was fantastic. I feel us older gamers who remember the early demos we saw on Games Master are very lucky the technology has come so far so quickly. There is a free game on the rift store called Polygon Nightmare which is essentially a remake of Dactyl Nightmare, check it out for nostalgia's sake. Subscribed

Thanks. I'll definitely check out Polygon Nightmare! I'm not sure how I missed that one. I recently played the original Dactyl Nightmare at a retro event so I have some frame of reference when I try the remake - it'll certainly be interesting!

  • @bartsimpson83

This hasn't really happened yet, unfortunately, but one thing that has me excited about VR is the possibility that in the future we might be able to use the technology to visit places most of us will never see in real life. A tour of The Louvre in Paris, a walk around the Colosseum in Rome, going inside the great pyramids in Egypt, etc. That interests me much more than the gaming potential, although that's pretty cool too.

You didn't mention Google Cardboard, which is an ultra-cheap way to try out VR if you have a smartphone. I'm sure that played a part in VR's acceptance into the mainstream. I bought a Vive just last week and I'm loving the experiences I've had with it so far!

You missed SGI's high performance VR in the 90s, and Virtuality was done using an Amiga 2000 (not 3000), but other than that, great documentary. It is often forgotten how the screens of mobile phones enabled modern day VR and I'm glad you brought it up.
Got my slightly used DK2 in 2015, played lots of AirDrift and the other demos and waited long for games to adapt VR, there were barely anything out there. Then a few years later i found out that Elite Dangerous had adapted VR, there were flight simulators and stuff + Skyrim VR and i rushed out to get my Vive. Now i don't even look at games without VR unless it is something very special.

    • @ReckonerVR
      @ReckonerVR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you have a reference for Amiga 2000s being used in the Virtuality machines rather than the 3000? Every place I could find says they used Amiga 3000s, and I've also visited a place in person recently which has some of the gen 1 and gen 2 Virtuality machines, and they use Amiga 3000s / PCs respectively. I'd be interested to learn if any were made on Amiga 2000-based systems.
