The nicest and most kindest man you will meet in the music business, he is still ahead of the game and going strong. Good on you John (Dennis) still waiting for the song My Dogs got Distemper!
Sorry Rob but that don't sound right ..did you think as we advanced in everghing we woudnt with electronic music the fastest of all music .. im lost what you mean
@@colonisedtartan9539 in the early days this music was all created in the studio and could NOT be created live to such a high standard, that is what I meant.
This is so bloody brilliant; an absolute classic. I never get tired of hearing it. I bought the single when it came out in 1980, when I was living in Newcastle upon Tyne. Brings back memories, and still sounds great, especially this live version. Well done John, and thank for posting. By the way, you look terrific!
I bought the full album in 1980 (I was 24 years old at that time) at a small record shop called Rock Pile Records (they no longer exist) here at the tail end of the Central West Coast, Santa Barbara, California which is my hometown. I saw John Foxx in 1979 with Ultravox at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in Hollywood, California just before he left the band. I have not seen John Foxx since then live on stage. I do hope he comes here soon. I am sure it will be a sell out on tickets.
I was at, secondary school, (high school), London, UK, played it, played it, played it and pla... well you get the idea, and LP... Now I am in OKC, USA, playing it, playing it , pla.. well you know...
@@undergroundwarrior70I bought "Metamatic" on import here in the US in...was it 1980? It's still one of my favorite albums. "Underpass" is my favorite John Foxx song.
I saw John Foxx in February, 1979 (I was 23 years old) at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in West Hollywood, CA. when he was still with Ultravox. I still remember to this very day he sang Touch and Go that night. Which of course it's on his solo debut album Metamatic album.
One of the men who are too decent to be noticed! Very talented and underrated. I don't know but I reckon he has been a big inspiration for many musicians who came after him. People who want a show will overlook him but if you want to hear music....listen!
Wow! That flanging of manually triggered white noise still gets me in its simplicity and intensity. I don't think I've ever heard anyone else of that era do that. Maybe it's John's trademark.
So much to praise here, including, from what I hear, the generous and unpretentious character of the man himself. For now, I will just point to his superb songwriting.
All time classic synth monument. The Single-Release was in January 1980, now exactly 40 years ago. This song was from another Planet. P. S. The basic line is industrial sound. Was John Foxx the first musician who take this sounds in his music? Anybody knows it?
I hope that Metamatic Deluxe Collector's Edition 8CD will include this unedited full-lenght flanged & distorted synth part. It's amazing. It's perfect. At the end of the extended version of Underpass, the synth shifts from one ear to another (before that it is always in the same place) drawing even more attention and marking its importance (and brilliance). Oh, I forgot to say that this live performance is great!
He's still amazing. One of my early musical influences and someone I'll always admire and respect. (And he looks great. I was SO gonnae marry him when I was 14 ) ;-)
Saw him at Roundhouse supporting OMD, Didnt think Id bother, but then I heard the music, and WOW....Awesome, blew me away, see you in Brighton early June...
superb performance John and all! could i pick your brains as to what instrument is making the rhythmic 'flange sounds' and how is it doing it, puzzled me for years? i tried to have a go with reason plugins but i couldn't get it to work?

Toy s Bon kaden
I would love to meet Dennis and have a chat!
I would never have thought in a million years that electro pop could be replicated live, just proves how talented John is, top bloke.

The 'heavier' and darker this song is played the better it gets. Utter classic and never ever ages.

The timing for the chorus' main melody seems quite off...
More style than Numan could ever wish for !.
