This game is my guilty pleasure. I prefer playing this over KOF 95, 97, 2000 and 2003 K9999 is my favorite character in this game. Also, the stryker system is difficult to master but really satisfying when you discovered how it works for combos
K9999 is a favorite of mine as well. I hear ppl dog on him for being a rip-off of Tetsuo, but that's exactly why I like him. Plus, his body horror/flesh growth arm special is one of my fav specials in fighting game history
I’ll be honest outside of K9999 there’s nothing great about this game, average gameplay for a KOF game, OST is very bad and lifebars look bad. KOF 96-99 are all better.
The PS2 port fixed a lot of the ugly sprite work and does go for a comic book / manga approach. I think this game is hated too much. KOF 12 was far worse

The gameplay is very good excluding here the large number of infinites the game has. Nona art is very strange for KOF. The winner portraits of the characters are terrible and very distant of what we saw in KOF 2000 (Specially Benimaru and Clark). The striker system is cool. Unfortunately the IA always use the 3 characters, 1 striker system except for the bosses. It would be cool to have normal battles with 2 characters, 2 strikers for example. Besides all the problems, I still prefer the gameplay of KOF 2001 than KOF 2000.
KOF 2001’s gameplay is worse than 2000 by a mile, it’s more clunky and slow, 2000 also had better music and lifebars and a more fun boss tbh. Striker system was better then too than in 2001. 2001 was a big disappointment for KOF due to the bankruptcy. 2000 also had a much better OST too.
Nameless is so edgy he goes by the name " nameless" Also his story is basically bionic commando ( aka my robo arm is my love interest ) K9999 actually doesn't betray nests for once unlike most of their agents
The game is good but the soundtrack is simple and catchy and there are a few good themes in there. But I don't like the striker system. One of my least favourites. I only like 94, 95 and XII less than this game
In my opinion, the soundtrack is the only cool thing about the game. Other than that, the game is trash compared to KOF 2002 / KOF 2002 UM and KOF 2003: The a.i is ridiculous, the controls are slightly clunky, there costume color options are trash, and don't get me started on the absurd Igniz.
