How to make a Retractable License Plate

In this video I show you how to make a FULLY retractable motorized license plate for your car or truck. This is made from fairly inexpensive materials, all of which can be purchased on Amazon. The link above takes you to a list of links for the materials required. Only simple tools are needed for this build.
Add this custom touch to your daily driver, hot rod, kit car, show truck or custom vehicle. People will marvel at the unique James Bond style feature at any car show you go to! It should be noted that this is intended for off-road use only. Check your local laws.

In Texas they scan your registration sticker on the windshield. Not sure of anywhere else.

@@Perceptence The trick is to install this on the rear of your car, and keep your front license plate on the car's dash. Every time you go through a Toll road (outside of Texas apparently where btw I lived for 6 years and NEVER paid 1 toll lol and they didn't do anything so not sure why it would matter there!), manually remove the front tags and hide the rears before you go under the Toll cameras. Make sure no cops are directly in front of you or in back of you, it's actually pretty easy and I've got them installed on my car and save about $2,350 / year doing it. My friend is a cop and said they wouldn't even know how to ticket for it unless you used it in a crime e.g. hit & run, robbing someone etc. but for harmless toll dodging, it's fucking brilliant and my buddy was high fiving me for the idea, i kid you not. If somehow you get pulled over just say you go to car shows and accidentally hit the button, the key is not to be a dumbass. For example, I could see some idiot getting carried away with one and racing with it, and getting chased by a cop and then getting caught. then, you'd probably get railed pretty hard for it according to my cop friend.

The one before the last one was ok. Just plain white with a small MD shield/flag in the center. The one after it looked like a 1st grader won a contest and they chose their design. This current one....I like it.
I haven't lived in Maryland for 30 years but I still have relatives that I visit back home. I found it embarrassing when my coworkers would ask me what was the deal with Maryland's plates was.

retractable licence plates are not illigle as long as the plate is visible while driving this only applies to locations where the vehicle in question is required to have a fount licence plate such as California

nice one! ,i get a lot of ideas for my ride from your car tutorials , in this one the nice touch using the part of the grill to make totally stealth , the only thing about is the size of the actuator for my case i have no room to fit the whole actuator , but still awesome design , keep the cool designs for cars up !

Sorry but it's in the car and it would be a real hassle to get out to take pics of it. IT's a pretty straightforward design though, nothing too complicated
Id like to see where you put the switches in the car and made it look stock
when I filmed it, I hadn't mounted the switch yet. There's surprisingly little space available for it anywhere in the car. I ended up taking the console out and finding a spot next to the shifter, but the switch is a little bulky and sticks up pretty high. I am considering doing some major surgery on the console and recessing the switch significantly

Wow nice work man. Idk if it's worth the effort when small battery powered screwdriver can take the plate of just fine.
Idk how often you retract it, If its every day then ya. But if its once a month or once a week for car meets then just use an battery powered screwdriver to take it off and throw it in the trunk. You also wouldn't permanently damage your car. Nice craftmanship though, it's certainly and interesting feature and talking point.
It's always retracted. It only goes up when I get pulled over for not having a plate.

We shall see. I am doing a helmet next...just not sure which gauntlet it will match yet. My Superhero Breastplate tutorial did not do all that well, so another breastplate is not on the agenda in the near future

It's more about the speed than the power, in this case. The next option down completed the operation in 1 second, which I thought would be too fast for this mechanism. This one operates in 4 seconds.

Where is the cable anchored too ? Didn't see anything in the video or instructions explaining that.
There is a small hole in each of bolts that I drilled. That is where the far side (closest to engine) connect. You can see that at the 5:00 mark in the video. The other side connects to the license plate frame itself. You can see that at the 5:15 mark.
David Guyton was wondering where the best place at the opposite end mounted , not the license plate end of the cable.
Or does it anchor to that bolt the hole was drilled in, wasn't sure if that was just a guide for the cable.
the cable goes through the hole drilled in the bolt, and it terminates right there at the bolt. It's not a guide for the cable, it's where the cable mounts to

2. I added a foam pad on the back of the plate to keep it from scratching the paint. I also intend to adjust it away from the bumper a little bit. No scratches so far

Why thank you! The issue you are having is likely because you are trying to view the link on a mobile device. I have my website programmed to dump mobile users to a simplified mobile version of the site. Easiest way to get around it is just to click the link from a computer or tablet instead. If you do that and you're still not seeing it, let me know and I'll figure out another way to get it to you.

Yeah...came with a bracket before I even took it off the lot. I do intend to fill the holes and have it repainted eventually.
I believe it is VERY illegal in most countries
