I am no expert, so my take is this: It's a technique based on the relaxation of the muscles and how we become stiff when faced by danger. Think of it like a ball filled untill it's rigid vs one that's half filled, when faced with the same power, the rigid ball will explode while the half full will simply absorb the hit and remain intact.
