Interesting. I have read that she was considered for both ..... in her bio. I do recall reading somewhere else that she was in negotiations for Into the Woods originally.
I haven’t a clue why Phantom is so popular. It was excruciating to sit through it, I would have left in the first 20 minutes had I not been assigned by my boss to take her daughter in law and grandson to it.

Streisand looked much older than 27 in the film. Most actresses playing Dolly were actually too old.

Honestly, I don’t think any show will outlive ‘Phantom’.
Lion King probably will. It is the most successful piece of entertainment media in all formats it has appeared in.
Glenn Close is born to be play Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard... Every inch of her skin absorbs the character to the tee, from the delirious expression in her eyes to the magical movement of her fingers. Ms Close is the true heir of the magnificent character created by Gloria Swanson. Patti Lupone doesn't even come close. Ms Lupone is too classically trained and Manhattan elite posh to let loose of her trademark Lupone snobby snarky diva persona. She might hit all the notes right but no one comes close to Glenn Close.
And yet Patti could sing the score as it was originally written and didn't require an awful key change like Glenn
