2024 Triumph Daytona 660 Review | The cardinal Sin | Sagar Sheldekar Official

  • A changing world demands manufacturers to stay on top of the change or be left reeling in its wake. This is Triumph's answer to cope with the dying interest in the supersport category world over - a faired everyday, comfortable motorcycle based on the Trident 660 but one which packs more power and torque to rival the Suzuki GSX-8R. But by naming it after their iconic racing brand the Daytona, they have committed a cardinal sin which enthusiasts will find hard to forgive for a long time to come. Sarge rides the Daytona's doppelganger while struggling to come to grips with the legendary supersport machine's painful demise.

I remember that video of the Daytona 675R with the Arrow exhaust. It was so iconic! But now its just a namesake. Can definitely feel the pain in Sarge's voice. Farewell dear Dayton 675R for now.😢

I did buy the original daytona. So it hurts to see it reduced to this. I'm sure this is a great bike. Like sagar said, they could have called it the trident sport or the sprint or whatever. And kept the daytona badge for a racing special. The name has done more damage to this bike than the bike itself.

Such uninformed comments can only come from someone naive to the industry. Race specials very rarely earn the manufacturers much money. They are a showcase of what that brand can do. KTM RC8, DAYTONA 675, etc were all in that breed of muscle flex sportsbikes. And it's not that they won't sell in okay numbers. Daytona 675 was supposed to be a 4000 unit limited run model. The bike was so good (taking the fight to the Japanese 600s and all that) that not only did it put triumph right in the middle of the map for fast bikes to buy (the street based street 675 and Daytona practically did a resurgence of the triumph brand in the sportsbike world). So yeah. It was a roaring success for triumph. The lack of buyers didn't kill the Daytona. The amount of R and D needed to stick to emission norms not being worth the profit did. Tiger advs were the new hot selling cakes. And triumph is a for profit organisation. It saw more profit in tigers and street triples. Daytona never was a loss making product. If triumph cared about enthusiasts it would have easily kept the original Daytona alive. Especially because their 765 are being run in all moto 2 bikes. It would have easily sustained the whole effort with some profit, if not minted them money Like tigers do, coz they can be sold at a premium to 40 year olds who have a much higher spending capacity but can't ride daytonas. So your logic that Daytona didn't sell well or enthusiasts didn't buy it (there was always a waiting list for it in fact) is a premise that can be conjured up by someone who has only 2 active brain cells who are fighting ober who gets the Friday night shift.

It's only a matter of chance that I too was looking for my first big bike almost 10 years ago at the same time :). I test-rode a couple of HD bikes and Triumphs as well... Both the Daytona and Street Triple. I still remember how trigger-happy both were, and just felt way way out my league. So like a noob, I bought the Iron. Been looking to get a "good" bike for some time now, and have been consistently divided between the Trident and RS... Until I found out that the Daytona was back. Back then, even the small test ride of the Daytona had left such an amazing impression on me, I WAS hoping it was the same one. Unfortunately, not to be. I genuinely agree with the Cardinal Sin. Some names matter :) Thank you Sarge for this review

I was hooked to your description and review of motorcycles by watching the OG Daytona 675 video. And here we're, full circle. You've come a long way, Sarge. You're a moto journalism legend in my eyes. Although I think the new Daytona 660 is a downgrade from it's predecessor, both in terms of power and looks, & the instead should've shared herself as a twin to Street Triple 765 instead of the Trident 660, it's still a great bike.

We met in Lavasa for Motoday and had a detailed discussion with you on this. Then I finalised the Daytona and we met the very next year in Vashi bike saftey event and you found my Daytona in parking after the show which was the only one there. You asked who’s Daytona is this and then we met again in the parking lot and it was real fun and again we met at IBW. 8 years since that day, still riding the same machine with same passion. hey Sarge, former 2014 Daytona 675 owner here, which I foolishly sold in 2020, I remember telling everyone who'd listen back upon news of the "new" Daytona 660 that it really should have been named the Sprint 660 as it is the logical successor to the Sprint range, as a sport-tourer (though that 14 litre fuel tank isn't such befitting a sport-tourer). This is Sambhaji-rao raje trying to fill the mammoth shoes of his father Shivaji raje, or Robin trying to don the Bat-suit and pretend he is Batman. Nope, we aren't falling for the name dilution trick. This isn't a bad bike, on the contrary, it's a compelling step to its rivals the Ninja 650 and CBR650R, just not the Daytona update we expected.
The supersport market sure might have shrunk, but the atrocious price increases have a lot to do with it. You mention the 1000cc supersports being the replacement for the 600 class supersport since the electronic nanny-aids make it easy for riders. That might be true for small section of riders, but looking at the prices, do you really think the market will be huge? Even the litre class market is shrinking, and icons like the GSX-R1000 and YZF-R1 are now dead. The ZX-10R and CBR1000RR-R soldier on, but how long? Even if we excuse Yamaha of not selling a street-legal R6, having practically replaced the R6 with a Ninja 650 cousin in the R7, Honda has a new CBR600RR that they aren't bothered to sell.
The other problem is, Triumph is NOT listening to their customers. 2020 Street Triple update brought such a shitty TFT display theme, you couldn't easily read the tachometer, did Triumph listen to customers and bring back the old theme from the 2017-2019 Street Triple in the 2024 refresh? Nope, they continued the old garbage themed display, not even offering an option of the old style theme which is so much more legible. And for a current Daytona 765, all they need to do is put fairings on the Street Triple - I don't mind the halogen lights and it probably wouldn't break the bank to have an LED headlight unit that fits the same shape of the old fairing, if they really want to save money on not making new shaped fairings. But no, Triumph isn't listening. Anyone who's keeping tabs on how Triumph has gone completely hands-off, let Bajaj handle everything in India, shows they aren't listening and don't care.

Once i saw the video of you riding Daytona 675r back in 2014 i was fan of that bike and you, the way you have the control on a bike 🤩
    Amazing...
But from now owning a Triumph Trident 660 i very well know the bike can be named Daytona but it can never be the legendary 675 r...😞

When Sagar reviewed Daytona 675R I bought the 675. Been a decade still the best beauty i ever rode on and off track. Raced for 4 years she was roaring against those Inline 4s.
660 not for me, Street Triple 765 yeah thats one of the best in the market. 600CC ZX6R is a beauty.
Still nothing matches Daytona 675, I can completely relate to Sagar.

Saw your video of Dayton 675 R in my childhood. I got inspired to buy one when I will be earning; but as said the truth by Sage for the litre class love, I am jumping straight to S1000 RR or CBR 1000 RRR ( if available).
Companies like Triumph are responsible to make youngsters as me to switch up to a litre class, since childhood dreams are crushed!
On the other hand ZX-6R exists but old guys know that it's not anymore the same grunt! For example:- old zx6r will still beat the new 6r at all means.
So people like me are left with no options other than litre class package

There was a bike at store called roaring toys at dahisar kandarpada metro station , that Daytona 2016 model had sc exhaust, it was stage 2 track tuned , even the fresh tires would loose grip it had mad power , installed accesories 5 lakhs to be precise , it also had stabilizer used for wobbling, better everything suspension all low down and hard .

Haven't had a chance to see one of these on the road yet, but I've experienced the Trident 660 and Daytona 675R. The Trident somehow looks like a CB300R XL and while it does sound good when revved up, the 675 makes the hair on my neck stand.
