“Developing more effective treatments for persistent Lyme disease”
Dr. Ying Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research interests are focused on bacterial persistence, antibiotic resistance, pathogenesis, and development of more effective treatments for persistent bacterial infections. In recent years, Dr. Zhang has been working on developing more effective treatments and diagnosis for persistent Lyme disease and associated disease conditions. His group identified various FDA-approved drugs as well as some essential oils that are more effective than the current Lyme antibiotics against Borrelia burgdorferi persisters in vitro. In collaboration with colleagues, he is evaluating promising drug candidates and drug combinations in animal models and developing more effective treatments and diagnostics for persistent Lyme disease and associated co-infections.
