  • This time we visit the different rail yards of CSX, NS, TASD (Terminal Railway Alabama State Docks), and AGR (Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway) in the Alabama State Docks area. We see some exciting trains, including the BNSF wind mill generator train CSX W241-14, at very nice places. Enjoy!

    There is a lot of cool railroad activity in this video. I've never been to your part of the country but it looks like it has a lot of interesting trains to video. Excellent video!

      Well, it's not my part of the country; I have also only visited it. But yeah, it's interesting, for sure.

    State docks interchange is on the i165 side of mobile and their actual yard is on the water channel side, CSX (sibert yard) is in the middle of them.

    Superb video, I really enjoyed seeing the trains and downtown Mobile as well. I take the Battleship Alabama (BB-60) is nearby as well. Saw the ship once when I passed it headed West to Corpus Christi, TX with a load of computer paper that picked up in Sanberg, FL. I was a helper/passenger on a J.B. Hunt 18 wheeler, back in 2001.

      Thanks! Yeah, I went to see the USS Alabama briefly, but didn't have the time to get on the ship. I spent some hours exploring the decks, engines, and fire control of the USS Missouri last year at Pearl Harbor, so I skipped the tour on the Alabama this time. But it's definitely worth a visit and maybe I dedicate more time to it next time.

    I have a friend who lets me use his tractor trailer repair shop to work on my rv on Deakle Rd. It truly is a neat place for rail fanning. You never know what might be sitting our in the yard. I've seen everything from windmill generator to M1 Abrams.

    I imagine the CSX activity in Mobile is a bit different now that FGAR has control of the Panhandle route. The Q60 trains now run north out of Waycross even when they're a negative number, it's wild stuff to hear a NB Q601 in Cordele, when I remember getting 601, 606 and 605 in Folkston.

    Great video...yes, Mobile is a nice city...but have you been to Jacksonville? There is rail action 24/7 and police are pretty knowledgeable about rail fans as long as we stay of the ROW.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. Yes, I've been to Jax, but not yet for railfanning. It's not very close to where I live. The nice thing about Mobile is that several railroads border each other, which means there is a lot of colorful power (at least more than we typically get in the CSX and NS heartlands).

  • @mikeroy4146
    @mikeroy4146 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm new at railfanning because I just recently discovered it on U Tube and I love it! I am 78 years old and I just can't get enough of it.
    I have a question for you experts out there.......Why is it that when a long train has more than one engine that the second engine and at times, also the third, is facing backward behind the first engine???

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Mike Roy Awesome! The different directions of the lead and trailing units have the advantage that they don't need to be turned around if later assigned to a train that goes in the opposite direction. Otherwise a wye or a turntable is needed. For safety reasons (better view), nowadays the lead locomotive of a long-distance train always travels nose-forward.

    • @howlingwolven
      @howlingwolven 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In a power string, there is a huge effort made to put a cab on each end, as that way there's no need to ever turn a locomotive around. And the way the middle locomotive faces doesn't matter, they're diesel-electrically driven and work equally well when travelling backwards as they do forwards.

    Ive seen these cars and tried to Google but to no avail have I found my answer. At 6:13 you see it, Norfolk Southern train, it looks like they cut an oil tanker in half, gave it a flat bottom and called it good. What is it called and what do they haul in it?

    PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU INTEND ON VISITING THE MOBILE AL RAIL YARDS:
    Very nice video of my area.(see my channel for hundreds of Mobile area videos). I want to know how you got away with shooting video on/around Dekle Road. You say " it's public road, no permission needed". You obviously (and amazingly) didn't get hassled by the State Docks Police (although I believe they stopped and talked to you...I saw the truck go by and heard them pulling up behind you). Maybe it's because it was on a Sunday, but the TASD cops have run off nearly everyone that stopped to shoot video/stills on that public road, claiming that they were including the State Docks in the background (!). Since the State Docks has a Coast Guard slip there, they consider the ENTIRE facility, including the McDuffie Island Coal Terminal, a military base. They say you can't shoot pictures or videos of a military base, so they have threatened us with arrest if we came back. My friends and I (all mature adults, not kids) have safely and respectfully railfanned Sibert Yard and the area around Dekle Road since the early 1980s. It took a while after 9/11, but the State Dock police came down hard on all of us for just sitting there, parked in the grass next to the microwave tower on Dekle Road, shooting pictures and videos. They took names, drivers license numbers, tag numbers and vehicle descriptions. We were doing nothing illegal, and were at all times being respectful. BE WARNED. Railfan there at your own risk.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yes, the officer talked to me and wanted to know what I'm doing (he checked ID and license tag). I told him that I like to watch and shoot pictures of trains and it seems he was surprised about doing such insane thing. He asked about the "radio" in my car (he meant the scanner) and I explained him what this is good for. Another, very friendly officer came by and told the first "they do it all the time". I was also respectful - eventually they just do their job - and asked if I'm on a public road which he confirmed. His only remaining concern was that I parked on what he called "state property" (of course, there are no signs!) and I promptly left this spot. Finally, he said "you're good" and went his way. I have made these experiences several times at other places, but what can they do? Eventually, google earth provides way more detailed information than any snippet of an amateur's video can capture. As long as google earth exists and drones are permitted, I'm not really concerned, but I fully understand your point.
