Just stop by some US TH-camrs on the way and have them change out the headlights, wheels etc. You can most likely find lots of parts for cheap at breakers yards. And it will give you a chance to do some collab content and tap into some new US followers.

Hi Sam, great choice. I ran one, back in the day, for 5years. Engine strong, so much response and flexibility, handling and practicality in one package. Whats not to like. BTW you might want to find the perspex divider between the roll hoops to cut down on cabin turbulence, especially with the roof down at every opportunity! Looking forward to seeing this road trip 👍

Did you register it in another state that allowed non residents to register the car to a PO Box address? Want to do a trip like that but couldn’t find answers from people that had done it. I don't think you can register the car here in US if you are not a resident or have a US driver's license, he probably registered it under someone's else's name, my advice is to rent a car and save all the headaches
The honest answer: register and insure the car through a local friend. If you're not a US resident then it's kinda difficult to insure it. There was a European TH-camr a bunch of years ago who briefly had a 911 Carrera in the western US. Basically he paid an American friend upfront to acquire it. Shmee150 is another TH-camr who actually owns his USA-based cars. He revealed in a podcast that he actually spent a lot of money on a USA visa to legally live and do business here.
I think you misunderstood the advice you were given. It was not to buy a car for £16,000, it was to buy a car and sell it and your loss would be less than £16,000!
@@lanmastersassistant659 but he won’t do that, he’ll sell it and lose money against the de-value of more miles, all the prep work (cost not disclosed), insurance. I think he should’ve paid £16k for the GT3.
I think the trick was to buy any car and then sell it after two weeks without losing £16k. For example, Sam could have gone for a 50k car and probably sold it for not much less two weeks later. Perhaps sell it on Cars and Bids with no reserve and made a video about it.

Love it, I'm on my 4th Boxster in 4 years (2007 987 Boxster, 2021 718 Spyder, 2013 981 Boxster S, and 2015 Boxster GTS). Great choice and one of the best drivers cars on the road for the money!

I owned one of these - same year, red over black. Bought it brand new, drove the crap out of it, loved every second. Even had the chrome wheels. So much fun. I also had a red over black '61 356B at the time, and I used to park them together in the garage. Lots of fun up and down PCH. Enjoy it!
Sam I’ve been watching STG for 7 years. It’s just hit me that you have become the most relatable car enthusiast on You Tube. I agree the early Boxster is small, light and ultra engaging to drive. I run several 80’s Porsche and as long as the warning light isn’t serous it gets fixed at the next service!

I picked up a first year manual 986 last September & absolutely love it! Took me longer to get due to its reputation among people but ultimately I went 986 over the newer 987 boxsters & cayman for a fun mid engine convertible. Cayman 987 will come sometime later.
My first Porsche back in 2005 was a Boxster 986S Manual in Lapis Blue with Graphite Grey Sports seats and GT3 split rim alloys. Loved it but in the 2 years I owned it the roof only came down about 10 times..When I bought it I also bought a Hardtop from the previous owner. I drove the pants off it anytime I could..Amazing handling and quick enough for everyday driving... One particular standout was driving from Pateley Bridge down past RAF Menwith Hill into Harrogate on a spirited drive behind a TdF Ferrari 355 Spider. 2 drivers cars driven how they should be..👍👍👍
Sam, window not dropping is a small Microswitch and convertible roof liner not seating properly is just an adjustment fix. Both less then an hour to get fixed up. Take it to any Porsche specialist and get it sorted
these boxster are getting more loved than you think Sam! they’re entering the classic era. I’ve restored a 986 S to proper factory spec and it was fantastic ! great choice.
Hello Sam, Boxster looks a good un. However it's missing a couple of important bits for your trip. It should have two headrest diffusers, which just clip into the holes inthe head rests. Also missing is the glass draught panel, which fits in between the seats. This is essential for your longroad trip to keepthe wind noise down and make the cabin draught free. It's expensive to buy as well. Also the hood not sitting in its runners properly is an easy fix. Just raise the hodd half way and gently push It away from the sidewhere it doesn't sit correctly. You might need acoupleof goesto get it right. It's important to have the hood sitting correctly or otherwise you could damage it. It might fix your window lift drop issue as well. Lastly some wd40 sprayed on the hood hinges and mechanism works wonders. Hope this helps, steve987

I lived in Redondo Beach for many years and toured much of the USA on motorcycle. As a car nut, I'm totally excited to follow u yet again across usa. And in a 986! Yes!
I’ve done a similar trip to this but after the drive to Chicago we followed Route 66 to LA via places such as Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. We opted to rent a Dodge Charger SRT which was perfect for the classic US road trip.

Sam, great choice - the 986 is now a classic - I would love to drive one too! Yes drive across what you think is interesting for us - car related, collabs - there are so many in America you could meet one in every states - a Tour de States :) seeing the last 5 sec. always have a plan "B" where you can get to a Porsche dealer or Garage who can fix it on the route. just in case.
Far better choice to buy a car than flying one over. Even with some service costs and insurance it will be a better value than losing the use of your GT3 for months and paying to fly it over. The GT3 depreciation from all those US miles would be far higher than the Boxster which is pretty much insulated from mileage. Boxster is a great choice for a road trip. As long as there is no critical issue like bore scoring or an IMS bearing then the Boxster will happily go for another 100k miles. It can be serviced anywhere and will not break the bank. And all of these costs are just business expenses to offset profits from YT ad revenue.
One of the most humble down to earth guys on youtube. Love it! One question, how did you open the front with the key? my key only opens the back one i have to use the handle in the car? is there a trick i'm missing here? Also that roof is super common, mine did it before we replaced the roof.

I have 100,000 trouble-free miles so far in my 2002 Boxster, so you should be fine. It looks like someone removed the rear center and roll bar wind deflectors. Replacing those would cut down on the top-down in-cabin buffering.

don’t forget the boot / trunk gets very warm as engine underneath don’t put camera bag in there as any moisture will become humid and enjoy

Check the convertible drainage. They clog up and water gets in the car under the seats and mess up the modules.

Far better choice to buy a car than flying one over. Even with some service costs and insurance it will be a better value than losing the use of your GT3 for months and paying to fly it over. The GT3 depreciation from all those US miles would be far higher than the Boxster which is pretty much insulated from mileage.
Boxster is a great choice for a road trip. As long as there is no critical issue like bore scoring or an IMS bearing then the Boxster will happily go for another 100k miles. It can be serviced anywhere and will not break the bank.
And all of these costs are just business expenses to offset profits from YT ad revenue.

One question, how did you open the front with the key? my key only opens the back one i have to use the handle in the car? is there a trick i'm missing here? Also that roof is super common, mine did it before we replaced the roof.

great choice Sam im a basalt black boxster s owner in the uk got one with 42,000 miles for 3.5k and its been brilliant !
I have 100,000 trouble-free miles so far in my 2002 Boxster, so you should be fine. It looks like someone removed the rear center and roll bar wind deflectors. Replacing those would cut down on the top-down in-cabin buffering.
I had one. Drove it to 210k miles with no hick ups and it was my favorite car I’ve ever owned. Great car and super super fun

Yesssss this is EXACTLY what I would have bought. I’ve got the 2.5 and even with less power than the S, it’s a great car!
