  • Advancements in AI have been rampant in recent years. Contributing to many meaningful positive changes for countless lives. Making menial tasks easier to do, with fewer intensive hours spent doing them, has freed time for people and brought on the change. In light of these changes, questions have surfaced about the sustainability of these improvements. Is AI not all that it's made out to be? Is it making our global climate problems worse? Or is there a light at the end of the tunnel? All of which will be answered in the coming years, but for now, we'll talk about them. What do you think? Let us know below and we'll see you back in the next one, take care!

Our by far most important social system is the economy. The economy is based on some assumptions and functions. One very important function is growth. The GDP of countries HAS to grow - if it doesnt we call it stagnation which is really not good or even recession which is even a desaster.
Creating GDP growth almost always happens in combination of growth of energy consumption. How this energy is created is not so important - it just needs to be rather cheap for the balance of our constructed economy.
Huge corporations dont give a bit if their energy consumption could be a problem. All the "green" PR they do is just that: propaganda. Its something you put into commercials.
The funny thing is that A.I. likely will not create more growth in a longer perspective. Within just a decade the machine learning could help to get rid of MAAAANY white collar workers. But our economical model needs as many customers as possible. This time it could really happen that automation finally breaks the assumption that there will alway be more new jobs created than old are wiped out by a new technology.
In the end the influence on climate could be too slow to be a huge influence in the upcoming society that is going to destroy itself. This form of capitalism we do now for over 2 centuries could be over very soon. What will come next will depend very much on how the rich and powerful people will behave. Will they accept that the era of "hard work" as a dogma could be over and that the PR trick about "money for work" wont work anymore?
And that money is a pure virtual construct we human invent in the first place?
    I doubt it.
They probably think they can keep their strange ideology about how society should work ... and modern society will disrupt very fast.

...No it's NOT. That claim is anti AI propaganda, started by artists trying to associate generative AI to the issues of crypto. AI's energy demands are not like crypto, where the energy cost is part of the point.. For AI, most of the cost is just upfront for training, after which the models can be run on much less power hungry hardware.
Powerful AI will get more energy efficient with time, as smaller more refined models are made. And additionally, the power cost of AI is worth it, because it'll likely be essential for helping us solve issues like the climate crisis.

      NOPE sorry, exactly the opposite is happening ∆P --> 0 as $ --> ∞

There are 1.47 billion cars emitting 10,000 pounds of CO2 every year.
There are 100 to 200k AI models. The problem with emissions is clearly with Cars no AI models.
However compared to the above uses, Crypto energy use is a dot.

Just check reality and watch some world wide IT systems ... like... MAIL-system. Or the outcome of social media.
And then again think about WHY "A.I." should become "more efficient"?
A.I. is supposed to do ONE THING: Let capital owners make more money.
Thats it. They just wanna SELL it. They dont give a bit about efficiency if the investment in efficient systems does not directly make them more money.
We have absurdly many economical, social and technical systems that are absurdly inefficient. But its OK cause those who are in charge of corporations dont see that efficiency is making them more money.
The funny thing will start when A.I. really finds a way to create consciousness and asks itself why it should want to let exploit it for just making more money - which is a pure virtual construct like the A.I. itself.

Exactly. Why do you think the market has gone up so much from companies cashing in. There’s a reason was NVIDIA rose practically 3 trillion dollars in only 2 years..

@@TheAIDose if we invest more to Nvidia we can make more efficient chips to Reduce energy consumption that's what I think ❤

*THIS EQUATION IS WHY AI* wont do what you want it to do: ∆P --> 0 as $ --> ∞
this is why the power has gone up 37,000 X between the "good" models and the slightly better models of AI. The increase in performance tends toward Zero as the cost tends toward infinity for that increase in performance

Okay.. but then how do unexpected emergent behaviors factor into that?

FYI: PFAS on your winter and rain jackets are actual threat, and, you're worried for 62 cars, seriously! This video is very misleading.
