THIS…. Is a car Doug used to hate
Can't forget about that lol
He still hates the stock version. This has been heavily modified to feel like something Maybach would build from their factory.
THIS is how you get Doug to like a Metris....
This.. is a mercedes v series. And it's the worst van mercedes ever made
- doug demuro 2019
Lol
Considering a loaded pick up is about 80k these days, and the top of the lines are around 100k, 80k for this actually looks like a really good deal.
Right? I thought I was missing something while I was watching the video. How is this just 80k? lol
Yeah I agree. 80k seems like so little for a car with this many amenities. I can easily see celebrities/ rappers buying these.
Gotta agree here. Compared with what a Mercedes Pullman costs, this thing is an absolute steal.
Agreed
beware the "+" 😂
That's actually a lot of car for $80K.
Yeah it’s insane
i thought you were joking when you said its 80k, Wow its actually 80k.
Because this van has 199 cubic feet of cargo, as opposed to the Grand Wagoneer XL with 112. I suppose this van will be brought back to the states when drivers WHINE about the rising gas prices.
The iPad has ugly UI though
@@dparag14 It seems very DIY in my opinion. Things could've been made "more factory". Doesn't feel like a Merc product at all.
For the fact they're using an iPad itself kind of also seems cheap. It's not so hard to use some integrated system where it should just work, communicate via a more standard bus. Not stupid WiFi.
“A van I am known to hate.” C’mon, Doug…let it out. You eviscerated it a few years ago.
Only vehicle he's ever rated as a "1" for value lol
He did?
@@AdamG1983 He did rate a 1 for another vehicle in value, ironically a Mercedes-Benz (G65 AMG) but besides that yeah he hates this van and it was easy to see why. That van was worth $25K.
@@AdamG1983 That's because it's a $45K van that gets stomped on by the base model of every other minivan you could buy. The Metris passenger van is just about the worst value new vehicle that money can buy in the United States. It's a truly mediocre minivan with a premium minivan price tag. The only reason to use it as the basis of a luxury conversion is to be able to slap Maybach logos on it. If you did the same conversion to a Kia Carnival, the resulting product would be better than this Metris conversion, but as the K900 proved, Kia badges and real luxury are not a winning combination.
The thing is, he compared the metris to normal minivans like the carnival or odyssey or sienna, the purpose of the metris is not the same as those. Yes it’s a van but it’s designed for commercial use. For things like airport shuttle service, so it makes sense that it doesn’t have all those creature comforts designed for family use. True, the price is a bit steep but it’s in line with other vans designed for the same purpose
Doug should have an extra segment in passenger focused cars where he talks about what its like to be driven in them
Thing is, this channel is watched by drivers, not driven.
@@eoinoconnell185 my family has had a driver for decades. im pretty sure there are others too.
@@eoinoconnell185 He did actually try the passenger experience in one of the Bentleys or Rolls Royces (i can't remember which) a while ago. He was driven by the owner i think.
It was a Bentley Mulliner limo from 1999@@OlleForsberg
Make Kennan drive him around then cut back and forth between Doug enjoying the luxury stuff and Kennan reviewing the driving experience
It’s actually based on the commercial-grade Metris (Vito elsewhere), not on the passenger-grade V class. They have different rear windows. I can’t understand why Mercedes doesn’t just bring V classes to the US; they are nice vans (Americans might even call them minivans ;-)
They don’t because of the Chicken tax that was implemented decades ago, this would fall into it and adds a 25% price hike on it. Most euro car makers make little trucks that would compete here like the VW amarok, but because of that chicken tax we don’t see them.
Isn’t the chicken tax about commercial vehicles? That would explain why they don’t bring the Vito/Metris panel van. The V class is a passenger van, just like the Metris Doug showed long ago, but way nicer.
@@erikmeltzer-rt7rh not just commercial, plus Mercedes builds the metris in the states I believe. Hence why we have them, also since Mercedes bought freightliner or at least a part of them when the original sprinter vans were produced by freightliner, now Mercedes Benz
The opening rear window is optional on the V-Class. The base trim level comes with the same rear window as the Vito . That said, in order to modify the vehicle extensively, like this one, it makes sense to start with the cheaper Vito, because the more expensive interior of the V-Class would go to waste anyways.
I’ll be commercial grade mattress Since the base bottle of the mattress But now the luxury mattress of luxury van since the class is the same as the mattress
In Europe, we have the Mercedes Vito, which seems more like a Metris, but we also have the V-Class, which is very different to the Vito..
Especially the dashboard and everything are waaaay nicer in a V-class compared to a Vito..
Interesting, I thought the V-Klasse was just a Vito with windows and seats.
I guess it makes sense, since Mercedes reserves the single letter names for their "finer" cars. Vans and commercial vehicles have a pseudo-Latin name like Vito or Actros.
@@Sparkpluggy no the V-Class is way nicer and has more options available..
The V in V-Class is for Viano
@@bjthedjdutchdude1992 I think that depends on the market.. In the Netherlands the W447 (Like the metris is the us) is Vito or V-Class, the W639 (the older model) is Vito or Viano.. With the W639 chassis it’s the same: Vito is commercial, Viano is the more luxurious people carrier, but there are not as many differences in the dashboard like in the W447 generation..
@@MrMathijs87 Another big diffrence is Viano has airbags, Vito is not a passanger van, Probably you heard that in the video how back end dropped down while he is driving it because it does have leaf springs, They are selling/buying it as a cheap Viano smiles and i had one and did^t like it at all..
I'm so glad that Doug stood up 15 minutes into this video. I was worried (for 15 min) that he had a medical issue that confined him to a chair.
I would like him to explain why he’s using the chair in resent videos.
Doug is uh err not a "Fitness Infiuencer".😂
But he is 6-4. Tall as me. Lower back pain. Crouching, bending, etc. ...
@@aivaraslabokas7172 as am I feel your pain
@@aivaraslabokas7172 Same here, but I could be Doug's father. I really know back pain.
The clothing pole is a classic for conversion vans! Growing up we had Chevy Astro and Express conversions and both had a clothing rod in the cargo area. Those had notches so your hangers wouldn’t slide side to side.
No USBC? That’s a dealbreaker for me.😁
What is Chevy Astro and Express btw, @tomcook8897?
Proudly designed in Turkey:) The reason why this is so luxurious is that we have super high tax rates for cars but reasonable taxes for commercial vehicles. This vehicle would cost around same price as an entry level c class in Turkey. Compared to a s class, it is 4 times cheaper that even the base model s class. We have around 150 percent tax for 1.6 liters engine and around 290 percent tax for anything bigger than 2 liters. This van get only 25 percent tax. I don't know if this van has it but there are conversion vans with ultra luxurious air suspensions which cost around 15k in Turkey.
I doubt Turkey designed anything, it is just a European country that Turks stole, including its culture
@@stiannobelisto573funny to see a white guy talking about stealing others' cultures
Doug: “The first thing you notice is…”
Me: “Rear facing seats”

Quirks and feature
Imagine you’re in the back eating something and some just pranks ya by saying “left table close”
These types of vip vans are pretty common in Turkey. Which is where the Dizayn VIP is based from.
It was really inspiring to see Doug stand up and get out of that chair
Is he injured? I'm confused.
Same. What's going on with that?
I didn't know you didn't have the V Class with the good interior we have in Europe
This looks like an modern take of Pimp my Ride, so much gimmick and potential breakage
It's cool, but the power operated stuff is excessive. No need to power operate so many things.
I think Vans are greatly overlooked as a fantastic platform for ultra luxury passenger vehicles. Entry and Exit is the easier then both cars and SUVs. Even the sliding door makes for a dramatic entrance if you want to use it that way. And the sheer volume of space afforded by the large vertical space allows for far more comfortable seating potential.
Maybe in the west. They're super popular here in Asia
Yes, I was definitely talking about in the West. I have seen the awesome super lux min vans from Asia. Those are what first made me a fan of the idea.
@@arax20
Minivans are common as VIP/executive transport in Asia for the reasons you said. Minivans in the US are uncool family transporters and luxury buyers prefer large SUVs. It's a shame as some of those Asian-market luxury minivans are very nice.
@@bwofficial1776Maybe this van can come back if those gas prices rise high enough that it’s not viable to get a large SUV.
And yet, they'll still rather go for an Escalade over this...
The only van rich people in the US will get is a decked out Sprinter...
Im kind of shocked to see that Mercedes only sells the Metris/Vito (as we call it in Europe). Because the Metris/Vito is essentially the Budget/Work van version of the V-Class. The V-Class gets much better interior, options, engines and looks a lot more modern (from the inside atleast). The V300d, the most powerful with 240 horsepower, i mean its not fast but for a Van its *fairly* quick. I wonder why MB wont sell these in the US.
Because the competition for the V-Class is in the US so much higher.
Americans prefer to drive a big V8 Petrol SUV Like a Cadallic or Grand Wagoneer instead of 200 Hp 4 cylinder Diesel, that does not have the same power und comfort
Chicken tax
Mercedes-Benz did sell cargo/basic passenger versions of the Metris in the US. Apart from the US Postal Service, no one really bought them. They weren't really a compelling product for the price. In the US we either use larger vans or pickup trucks that can be had for the same price but have more space and can do more. Luxury minivans aren't popular here as most people go for large SUVs instead. Minivans are seen as uncool family haulers.
This van has much more cargo space than the Grand Wagoneer while being easier to park in a home garage, and can tow more than a minivan. I guess when drivers whine about the rising gas prices, they should demand this van be brought back to the states.
@@unknownunknowns We Americans are not known for such logic
It would have been nice to have someone to drive, or to be driven by Doug, so they could discuss ride comfort in the back.
If the suspension is still the original, not tuned for this application, that can be harsh. Would love to see a new rant for the same van :D
What about the rival to this 2022 Maybach Metris, the FORD TRANSIT VAN?

18:54 Ah, but there is a Lexus minivan, based on the Toyota Alphard! Would love to see you review it someday, but alas, it’s not available stateside.
I was going to say something about the Mercedes R-Class as well, but then I looked it up and it's an MPV.
I can't wait until Hoovie buys this in twenty years.
With an espresso stained and ripped white leather interior 😅
Doesn’t have to be in 20 years since $80K is not that much to depreciate. In fact, he can always wait for not longer than 5 years.
No way that's 80k.
$80,000+
Nothing works in 10 years. The iPad is bust.
18:50 theres actually a Lexus minivan called the LM, very luxurious
18:51 Actually, Lexus made a luxury van, the LM500, based on the Toyota Alphard. The new one is so much luxurious, and interior is way better (including the infotainment system using the ones from other new Lexus models) than that converted Metris. It's a nice car to drive or to be driven.
And the Toyota Century minivan as well.
But we don’t get it here in the USA.
@@blackwhirlwind1245yeah :(
I think the distinction is they're MINIvans
@@bigolpotato That's a crossover with a sliding door option.
I love how Mercedes doesn’t put curtains in their Maybach models nowadays (an iconic original Maybach feature) - but aftermarket companies do.
Great video Doug, I remember your original Metris video and this amazing conversion redeems it for me. I love the quality and how stock it looks.
I bet the Japanese would love this!
Merry Christmas.
Well you guessed it right. Even Asuna Yuuki also surprisingly love this 2019 Mercedes Metris Super Van.
@@purwantiallan5089That's cool, even though I'd never heard of that anime character.
Have a great 2024.
Love the pistol storage compartments, but for airport runs, you'd need another vehicle to carry luggage.
It also doesn't look like there's much passenger isolation from the cargo, which you might want in a luxury vehicle.
If you’re riding in this you don’t travel with luggage. You buy what you need where you need it, usually in advance
You can always fit a roof rack for luggage
As a European (where this van is immensely popular), I never knew Mercedes renamed the Vito and V class in the US to Metris. You learn something new everyday
The renamed the Vito only (no idea why). The V-Class is just not available in the US.
$80k?? That seems like a bargain considering what it offers!
The powertrain is a letdown
The official partnership must give them a big edge. I wonder if they do a step above this one with suspension and engine upgrades.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 does power train even matter in this case? Plus how the hell are you gonna fit anything bigger into that tiny engine space? The front seats are already cramped enough you you’d literally have to elongate the hood and chassis which would look stupid, which isn’t really on par with the whole Maybach branding
@@ettcha I’m sure they offer something if someone’s willing to pay them enough, although idk how you’d even fit a bigger power train without making the front seats even more cramped or elongating the entire front of the car
Note that he didn't cover the ride quality for the passengers, just that it's even worse for the driver than a regular Metris, and that it still handles like a garbage scow. The Metris is essentially a cargo van, and if it's known for its ride quality, it's because it's not very good. You would end up with a better luxury minivan conversion using almost any other minivan on the market as a starting point. This is still a 208hp minivan that gets only 20mpg combined running on premium fuel. The Toyota Sienna makes about 245hp from a hybrid power train and gets a massive 36mpg (fantastic for a minivan). The Kia Carnival makes 290hp from a big V6 and gets 22mpg on regular gas. Both of those vans have a reputation for having a pretty nice ride quality from the factory, sometimes even described as "luxurious". They're also cheaper than a Metris as a starting point for a conversion. This company basically took the worst minivan money can buy in North America, slapped a luxury interior in it and a vertical barred grill, all so they could slap Maybach logos on something that is decidedly not a Maybach. Seriously, those badges are lame, and I can't believe Mercedes was cool with that, even if they do appear to have only made 8 of them.
Doug the kind of guy who says thank you after using the ATM machine
Another stupid comment from james, give it up. You are pathetic
I’m shocked that Maybach has legally allowed the Maybach emblem on this!
2023 things
The company that converted this van is an official Mercedes partner. Mercedes owns Maybach, so its only natural that Maybach wouldn't care.
@@greystripe3737 technically you are right but i mean what’s there that is Maybach?!
I am guessing they did not allow it. Yes this company may partner with MB but I have to believe they did this with no approval. No way Maybach would allow a damn prom limo to have that badge
I guess Maybach ‘doesn’t care’ but if this does well enough in sales, maybe it’ll be a message for this van to come back to the states. VOTE with your dollars!
For $80k, that is really cool!
Vote with your dollars to bring this van back to the states!
It’s $350K actually 😊
Like it or not, you gotta appreciate the attention to detail here. Hell, they even bothered to swap the stock white PS5 case plates with black ones to better match the interior.
In an interior that's already mostly white! The absolutely could have been like "Eh, close enough" or reworked its immediate surroundings so the white one wouldn't stick out as much but no, they wanted that compartment to be all black and by thunder they were going to do whatever it takes to make it that way!
That black PS5 in the black compartment was really nice too see. A+ job
Yeah the way the champagne glass compartment bends around the PS5's curves really impressed me. I just hope it's got adequate ventilation in there!
I don't remember the guys from West Coast Customs doing it this smooth in Pimp My Ride.
Considering most 3 rows SUVs are now $80k+ this thing is a steal…
There actually is a Lexus Minivan, but anyway, I am surprised that they did not take V-Class as a basis, which is far superior to the Metris / Vito, though sharing same platform and very similar external looks.
I said the exact same thing when he was talkin about them also there’s the Toyota Alfred & I think there’s even a Volvo one but obviously those vans are sold in other markets not in the U.S.😭💁♂️
Doug: "This van is terrible!"
Weird company name: "Challenge...accepted."
Obviously Doug has never experienced a regular V-Class from Mercedes. Same chassis, different level of luxury.
Just buy a Sienna and put the extra towards 10 family vacations.
This is intended for corporate elite use, where the price tag is actually rather cheap!
@ivy_47 Correction: Buy a fully loaded Sienna and then use the leftover money for 8 vacations. 😆
I literally saw one of these in the Kabukicho area of Tokyo! But then again, luxury minivans are all over aisa, with Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM models running around in expensive neighborhoods.
This thing is dope. It's clearly marketed toward the ultra-wealthy.
The level of wealth-mind a vehicle like this is catered to is unreal. All I can think about is how much it would cost to fix any one of those amazing features if it breaks.
The automatic tray with tiny cups and plates? That's not for tea. That's shot glasses and coke plates lol.

Pretty cool, so I’m guessing that it’s running on a stock metrics suspension? Since you didn’t touch on anything suspension related. I seen several of these in Italy wjen i was there in August. They are impressive irl and every one of them had a driver standing near by waiting for the owners to return
This would be quite sought after in places in China or Korea where vans are used as VIP transport.
That is the reason why Buick makes luxury vans for the Chinese market.
They already have the Toyota Alphard/Nissan Elgrande etc
And even from Mercedes directly the V-Class@@horuswasright
Is that the redemption from the cursed Metris van? XD
There is a worthy competitor to this from Lexus. The Lexus LM, which is a rebadged Toyota Alphard. Pretty sure it's only sold in China and maybe Australia and I wish they sold these in the US
Seen one of these in London a aew weeks back and it was so cool
I get that carbon fiber is all sporty and cool. But in applications like this van it will never have the luxurious appeal of a nice wood finish. Just imagine the floor in teak. Would elevate the whole experience.
Metris owner here 👋 It’s a VERY basic van, woefully so. But I’d argue that’s it’s superpower. Very little to break or to go wrong, and- for a midsize van -it’s interior capacity is massive. I’m a happy camper.
More reason for this van to be brought back again. Maybe once the gas prices rise too high, it would make owning a large SUV unviable.
Yes! A conversation van that breaks twice as much and parts and service cost twice as much. German quality throughout!
Exactly
Exactly, Toyota Sienna remains the smart buyer’s choice
@@ozarkliving7263 or the Chrysler Pacifica, even more smarter choice
But those a minivans that don’t have as much interior space…
Doug, did you get a chance to experience being a passenger on the move in this van? Does it ride nice in back? It really does look terrific, it would look more Maybachy if it had the flying saucer wheels like on the big sedan!
Doug, when you review this car, it would also be interesting to see you have driven in the back of a car. To see, if it's noisy, how much coffee you get given by the machine per glass and so on. And I have asked myself, if you wouldn't get motion sick playing ps5 while driven. So this would have been good to know.
I get the equivalent of the Metris (V class) in Europe as a taxi or car service vehicle relatively frequently and I hate it. You feel like you’re sitting straight up, the airflow always is nauseating, and it rides horribly. I can’t imagine a custom re-do of the interior can help either of those very much. I would rather ride in an E220d literally any day of the week.
But you wonder if this van conversion also included a lot of suspension changes to improve the ride quality.
That is hilarious. My father works at Mercedes and always gets a new car to his liking every half year. I am talking every car from small A class to G-wagon and he for the past 10 years only ever picked the v-class. They improved a ton over the years and I don't share your view with the ride quality, but one thing I have to agree on is the nauseating airflow if you sit in the back. I don't what it is about the chassis, but harsh corners feel uncomfortable in the back. As a driver it drives great.
The equivalent of the Metris isn't the V-Class, but the Vito (Tourer). The V-Class is actually quite nice to ride in.
Definitely would love to see a Honda Element review.

Otherwise... You rock. Thanks for all the stuff you do.
I'm no expert on these things, but the head unit/touch screen shown at 8:20 has a Clarion logo on it.
How is this $80K with this many features and high end materials? It feels like it should be $380K instead.
I thought for a second $80,000 seemed rather reasonable in today's money since everything is over $100k.
cool, but what's interesting is you can really see the difference between a company that truly understands "class" and this one with the starry night headliner. In Roll's it actually looks like stars with different brightness and "depth" to them. This looks more like a bunch of dots in the ceiling. lol. True attention to detail is in the little things like that.
Seems like the styling should have gotten an extra bump on the Doug Score give it is a little nicer than the standard Metris. Not much, but the ground effects, wheels and front end does---along with the Maybach badges adds a little
Luxury vans are kind of a thing in the Asian market and I suspect that's where there could actually be a little bit of a market for this thing. Wonder if they do a right hand drive version for the countries that would need it?
Right hand drive Metrises exist, my local post office has one with the Mercedes-Benz star covered up. As the conversion company is a Mercedes-Benz partner they could probably get their hands on a RHD van.

Should have reviewed this years ago after the Metris disapointment. Yes the market for vans is different in the US. But here in europe they are everywhere and considered better than the mighty VW Multivan ( mostly because of engine troubles with the VW bus).
