Can’t find someone to give you feedback on your art? No problem you can do it yourself and I show you how this week!
I'm loving ur new style!
The hardest part of spending 2 months to create an animation is when a professional told me that the anatomy is deformed, and that 14 frames shouldn't take 2 months. But he's right. I should study my fundamentals until anatomy is second nature to me.
After seeing the growth chart, I can see why at times, I look at my art and immediately say or get the thought "its trash."
Helps me to look at something I did 6 months to a year ago when I feel like that, I may still not be happy with the result but I can see the progress I’ve made which makes me feel a bit better about it.
As my 3D animation teacher always said “There is no such thing as “Im done”. There is always room for improvement.”
It wasn’t until I decided to make and eventually pursue art seriously that I really understood what he meant by that.
I feel like this is the best art school on YT, may seem comparable to others but the consistency of putting new topic or addressing growth issues is insane, I hate that I'm late to be part of this
Don’t worry, you’ve got years worth of awesome videos to watch through!
2:45 BASED, Marc is officially my favorite TH-cam artist.
lets go artists that like f1!!!!!! (tho it kinda bugged me that the image was from nascar lol)
@@zanettilla every sport image was from a wrong sport ;P
@@szymonmatusiak2063 oh ahahhashs I didn't say anything then!!
This video helped me realize a shortcoming over the last 2 years drawing. I do not seek feedback actively beyond sharing my drawings in 1 or 2 places. I try to be self critic, but seeing that graph I understand better now how limiting that is. It really boils down to understanding and having the experience to make it work. Really awesome advice you've shared here. Thank you
One of the most frustrating things for me is when I can see something is not right, but I can't see how to fix it because I don't know what "right" looks like. I just know... this isn't it. It's not even a matter of now knowing how to do what would fix it; it would only be like, lines on the page, I know how to put lines on the page just fine. But where? And why? What even is wrong with the lines I have? It looks like butt and I don't understand why.
Oh yeah, knowing that something is off but not being able to point my finger on it is the worst feeling ever.
I think this is the issue the video is addressing. Perhaps by acquiring more knowledge on that required fundamental (e.g., anatomy and figure drawing) you'd be able to get the aha moment and find a fix, but this knowledge does not always evolve together with your skills
@@danielcalencar WHAT required fundamental, tho
Like that is literally the problem
I've been demoralized lately because the answer that I keep coming to is needing critique from others, its really hard for someone like me to seek help from others, as well as always putting all my faith on the kindness of strangers and their skills, hopefully this video can help me along and give me a little boost
Usually after I finish an illustration, I try to find points of weaknesses that I have. I.e being the anatomy, the way I drew X, or shading the hair which in my opinion is the hardest to nail for me at the moment. After I find out the points I have, I note them down and forget about it lol. I suck at schedules lol.
That explains the periodic art confidence i get for a month.
I have always been trying to criticize my art but i didn't because i didn't really know what is wrong with it but now thanks to this video i know how thanks
I didn't know I needed a tutorial to do what I already mastered in these years of roasting everything I draw 🤣 but turns out I did!
i suck at critiquing my self ,i always rage quit when drawing currently saving up money to enroll to your art school
might need to work on that instead, sounds like you're being perfectionistic and too hard on yourself
artschool may help with techical skills, but i dont think theres any classes on this aspect
@@harrietjameson im just hard on my self maybe becuz im too old to draw and follow it up with busy work schedule and art has to much mechanics to understand, i only draw on Saturday and Sunday for now im a trash at it
@@Zxaparts no such thing as too old to draw, the only advantage kids have is that they learn slightly faster and draw like crap without caring (luckily you can learn the second one)
drawing bad and being okay with it is the first step to mastery, because mistakes are the first steps to success. And being okay with them just makes art more fun
Didn't Marc open a discord where you can join for free?
A huge thanks for the tips. I do admit that I have a huge ego whenever it comes to my art, and today I've learned that setting those ego aside is extremely important to take one bigger step forward into improving my artwork.
This is legit. The moment my own art impresses me, I can’t see improvements in weeks😅😅😅
Your videos always come in handy at the right moment, you're GOATED
Hey Marc!
Ive been doing your 1 year art challenge since last September and I have felt that I made small improvements every month. I am currently on month 10 and I am dedicated to finish this 1 year art challenge. Recently I was even wondering if I am making improvements, because I don't have a pro artist to check my work but thankfully you uploaded this video which helps a ton. I am aware that when I finish the 1 year art challenge, I don't expect to be a master of what I learned on my own, however I see it as getting a basic idea of theories, and skills in art. Anyways, once I finish this 1 year art challenge, I am planning to enroll in your art program by the end of this year. I look forward to it!
Very useful tips. Thank you very much sir! 👍

thanks for always growing Marc and pushing us outside our comfort zones. You're great teacher and youtuber.
I love your new video thumbnails! Just the right amount of boldness! :D Also stylized Marc is adorable! Pls keep making these!
for me, i always save my drawing and send it to my phone, and looking at em when i rest
so its more feels like its someone else art
The timing is insane, thanks for the new class❤
Loving these new thumbnails, and art advice is superb as always!
Thank you for this!❤
thank you teacher Marc
Perfect timing on this video, I’ve been going through it on this lately
A video i've been waiting from a long time now!
Awesome! So helpful. This is exactly what I commented a while back and what I've been needing. It's harder for me to critique my own art vs others
Ah this makes so much sense. ‘A true artist is never happy with his work’. I keep looking back on things I was pleased with 2 years ago and noticing big anatomy mistakes. I suppose that’s a good thing though as it means I’m progressing! Marc you need to invent a name for when you ‘get used to your mistakes’, man I hate it when you come back to something you were doing for hours the previous day and it looks terrible but you were blind to it the previous day…
Guys is true, do what he does and it works. I just shaved my head and my art has improved 100%. I also did several practices he shows in this video and others, but if you wanna believe study, practice and hard work makes you better, I guess you can try that too.
Thank you Marc!
I have always been bad at asking for feedback and recently it's been on my mind more. This came at a good time for me. I'll push harder to ask.
This was my experience in a studio where an AD wasn't nearly as skilled as the art team but they were in the position because of theoretical knowledge and a "trained eye"; some mismatch in technical skill which is compensated by theory and soft skills is ok I think, but eventually this became a burden because there was nothing else they could teach us and ended up being overly critical and nitpicky to over-compensate and justify their job. You make a very good point, Marc, you need both!
after seeing the chart makes me realise improving is not in one thing but two or more skills
Great video as usual Marc! I noticed you started including a comic rendition of yourself in the thumbnails. It's pretty funny. I joined the discord of the artschool not long ago and it's definetly useful to be part of it. Get positive and learning feedback, and just sharing the experience with others is a lot of fun and motivating. I'll try the 3 attempt self critique as I post my works on the discord and forum and see what feedback we get, so far things have been going really well. Still on term 4, but almost done with it.
Great Advice as always SENPAI! 🙇
My eye is almost always above my technical skills which leads me to draw even less and widen the gap 😓
Literally me just relying on my wife's opinion before I continue with my designs 🤣🤣
As always, you have done a marvelous job of making informed content, Mr. Marc Brunet. ❤
I'm covering this myself and have been obsessively reading Ultralearning by Scott H Young, an amazing book! (I highly recommend it hehe)
I'm grateful for the timing on this video so I can get more information!
Thanks, Mark!
This thumbnail is GREAT! 🤣
😮 I watched this not knowing it was so recent
I've been doing this a lot lately. It really does help to be your own critic. you've got to be hard and soft on yourself...
Pause... 💀
That title makes me want to ask you for a 'How to self-promote art' video
Yessss! Another Marc thumbnail!
Do you think that it’s possible to train your eye so much that it’s almost impossible to catch up in skill? I think I know some people like this, who are always miserable about their actually good art skills, because their art isn’t master level.
being miserable may be a side effect of having a good idea, but the two do not need to go hand-in-hand
If you do train your eye to such a level, you arent focussing enough on putting your skills into practice. Its also much easier to remeber and understand concepts when you put them into practice
Now idk why I see your drawings different. But for get better it is a way for getting direct feedback from experts, and is going to streams on twitch or picarto and ask them for advices. Te other method I recommend is learn how to use your mind eye to actually see what you're going to draw, an then try to reproduce that. And the third thing, take an artist that you like, put next to a white canvass and try to draw the same thing, then create a new layer below with the original image, check the mistakes and create theories based on what you did wrong, to learn how to better mimic and learn from a style and then apply this concepts to bring to life what your mental eyes see
Finally
Another way to roast my own drawing instead of just "what noodle cup did I just draw?"
Ty Master.
I like the end of the video where the frog sniffing the art 😆. But I will use this to advance in my art career journey and be the best that you.
I love this channel.
Just in time!
i was literally looking at some of my art last night that i made 5-6 months ago thinking they look like trash now and that i could do better! i was wondering if that meant i'm getting better at art and that graph you made probably explains what's going on for me!
Goated lesson
What am amazing video. I know it wasn't necessarily the intention, but I felt super motivated after watching it
this is why whenever i make a drawing, the next day i see all of it’s imperfections and keep adding things after i claim that i’m done lol
O trabalho desse cara é incrível! admiro muito as artes dele e essa anatomia impecável dos seus personagens 👏🙉😃
Theory requires a basis in reality. Fortunately we have books and references, I think references are only needed to support the information so that you can take it to imagination.
Gonna improve with this one
First also you always upload what I am struggling with at the moment.
Good vid!!
After 7 YEARS, now I understand how to visualize in 3D, FINALLY
Wait until someone else roast your art everyday
2:43 hahahaha I got the joke here :P Thanks for the episode!
man i don't know what id do without your art tips 😭
I really like that anime marc o on the thumbnail
at 1:50 the red and green dots should move in sync along the time axis.
apart from this, Great vid !
Hey Marc! Have you seen the new TOS of Adobe? What do you think, should we be afraid?
Thank you >~
I like your draws
NOT FIRST, I LOVE YOU MARC :)
Marc are like sensei for me. And it's funny cause on a preview he looks like Saitama
Lol the meme at the end....
*chanting Marc! Marc! Marc!
cool thumbnail btw!
Clever!!
Not gonna lie I was actually working on a piece perfecr timing
No wonder the “Valley of Dispair” feels like despair… It’s shaped like stairs
I DO THAT ALL THE TIME :D
As a failed art TH-camr, I don't know what else to do.
Yay
My problem is not learning and knowing the theory, my problem is to not get crushed by my self-judgements because I am comparing my art skills to the perfect theory. "Your art could be like this if you do xyz, but it's not and why are you not doing xyz then?", that quickly makes me feel like a failure.
dont beat yourself up over it. Easier said than done, but accepting that its okay for your art to look bad is the first step to improving and having fun in art
id recommend that you give it your all to fight perfectionism, it truly is a deadly beast
should i ask for critique on my artwork that i think is my best- or should i ask for critique on ones i think are trash?
I can never finish a piece because I always see things wrong with it. I've been working on the same piece on and off for almost a year because I'm not happy with it.
I love your anime persona 🎉
So TLDR; when you can clearly see the odd parts or you can see what are you lacking form your own drawing, its mean your observation skill already better then your technical skill 😂
my bald head goat 🐐
I’m surprised that this is almost the exact same thing that I’ve been doing for the past couple of years, I just didn’t realized it😅….
I feel... Curious about the artist learning curve. Is it just me that i think my eye is always at minimum two steps above my practical skills? Like, 90% of the time (no exageration here) i finish my art not because i think is finished or because there is little room for improvement, but because of how exhausted and done i am for not being able to reach the quality i want. Most of the time i try to not get to that point, but the constant is forcing myself to leave it in a spot i can say "well, thats the best i could do".
I have never felt like "OMG im such a great artist". The best i have ever felt has been most like "well, i think im decent", and that is the other 10% of the time.
Jokes on you I always look at other artists and compare my own drawings and think they're bad(don't do that)
When people compliment me all the time 😅
Check yo self before you wreck yo self 💯
I'm too good at criticizing my "art" :D and I have an art channel on YT rather for fun and to encourage others :)
You're a formula 1 fan? Hell yeahh
Can't I use shadow Jutsu?
Can I know the name of the background music in his video plz
La perspectiva es más importante es la verdad
Thought the thumbnail was saitama for a sec lol
My friends are always too nice (she's an intermediate artist like me)
POV: watching this when you just moved on from the stickman drawing stage
I critic myself because no one else will.
Marc how do you study something, can you explain that please
not marc, but give me an example, what are you trying to study? ill explain the process i would use
@@harrietjameson at this point I'm studying portraits, and soon will move on to the figure, followed by anatomy.
@@Peter-wl3tm so all of those have different subskills to learn
for portraits you learn: proportions, anatomy, planes of the face, and construction. So to study proportions and construction for example, you can take an image of heads (photos and drawings) and measure them, trace them, etc to understand what you're seeing
then you copy down either the reference, or the tracing you did (typically the tracing is easier to copy) thinking about all the stuff you just analyzed
