Fifths Tuning on Baritone Ukulele - Yes or No?

- I love to try different strings on my Baritones and the Aquila 31U Fifths Tuning were certainly something very different to the Martins or Living Water strings I'm used to. I'd love to hear what you think. :)

I've got a Kala KA-BG baritone ukulele that I tune in 5th's, but I take the DGBE strings with wound D and G, drop the D down to C, keep the G, then I get the gCea strings and drop the E down to D and keep the A, it sounds really warm and resonant, I imagine because of the lower tension on the C and D strings. I imagine yours tuned with these would sound WAY better than mine

I have got 3 Baritons, One is tuned DGBE, Worth strings, the second GCEA (Low G)Living water strings and now I have ordered a set High D gbe from Ken Middelton, I love the living water strings, for my third Bariton, unfortunately shipping always takes a long time to Spain from the UK, ever since the UK has left the European Union, the Spanish Customs keep the items a long time in their office(intentionally?¿?¿, everything is possible)Greetings from Jerez

@@FourInchCats I use the U31 strings on one of my Concert Ukuleles. My current collection consists of 42 Ukes, including 5 Baritones. The U31 strings may not sound good on your Baritone because the string densities are designed for Concerts. I like the CGDA tuning because sometimes I like to practice chords on the Concert Uke before I play my Tenor guitar which has a longer scale length. I experiment with lots of alternative tunings and string manufacturers. If you want to pursue the fifths tuning on your Baritone you can try several options. I use Smooth wound gold strings for the D string on one of my Baritones. You could easily tune that down to a C. Hannebach makes a single Gold D and so does Uke Logic. For the G string, you could use a CF27 flat wound Thomastik Infeld. This is also available as a single string. For the D and A, I would suggest fluorocarbon. Savarez treble strings is a nice choice. And Uke Logic makes a Low G set for Baritone. If you go this route you can purchase the Smooth Gold option and tune it to C. You could easily use the E and tune is down to a D and the A is already set to go. I buy most of my strings from Strings By Mail. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of purchasing the individual strings, you could ask Joel at Uke Logic to make you a custom set. He is a lovely guy and very helpful. I keep one of my baritones tuned in fifths to match tenor guitar for more comfortable practice, and I have been running in circles trying to find an ideal string arrangement; the most significant issue i've had is inconsistent tension, so hopefully this will be an improvement. When I asked my luthier about it, he sort of looked at me sideways and said, "Well, I'll see what I can do..." Thank you very, very much for your long winded answer :)

The Aquila 31U set is made for concert ukuleles so they can be tuned to CGDA. I don’t understand how you’ve got them to work on your baritone without breaking the strings.
I took it very slow tuning them; perhaps that was the key to it? (No pun intended :) )
The only other gotcha is that over-tightened strings could pull the bridge off.
I’ve added the 31U strings (CGDA) to a concert uke. Sounds ok but not great. The 30U strings (GDAE) on my concert uke sound really good.
I was surprised too. I've seen a couple of other people say they use these strings on a tenor and they tune down a tone.
I use the Aquila 31U on my tenors, tuned down one whole step. I really think that if tuned down one whole step (or more?) on the baritone it would sound lovely -- certainly not the tight, tinny sound as in the video.
I also tuned one of my baritones in fifths usings guitar strings , not all of them have the same tension but it works I like it for practising but I still prefere the standard baritone tuning but it 's good to experiment ,,I am Italian and never cared for nylgut strings A' quila (stress on the first sillable) I like the red ones though

Thanks, l do play in fifth tuning but on Tenor guitar rather than baritone Uke as l have since paired down my instrument collection 😄

It's the same tuning as a Tenor Banjo so maybe you could play Jazz Tenor Banjo stuff.
It was more the strings I didn't like. I'm currently experimenting with different strings for the fifths tuning and getting a much better result :)

I thought a tenor guitar was the same size as a baritone uke?
No, a Tenor Guitar is much bigger? I’ll look at that in. future video 😊🌸
you can only give so many names to a thing with 4 strings and a neck. my understanding is the difference really comes down to construction. tenor guitars tend to have truss rods to support the added tension of steel strings and higher tuning. the scale is also slightly different. baritone ukuleles tend to be somewhere around 19" scale length and tenor guitar tend to be 22-23".
but again, its kind of all over the place. i found a company outta south africa called "Fanner" that build electric baritone ukuleles and tenor guitars. since electric, they all come with truss rods.

@@FourInchCats l do but had to replace the D string quite quickly due to wear which was disappointing , checked the frets in case it had caused it but all seemed ok ❤️🎵
@@lynnemarriott8755 Sorry to hear that. I go through a set every couple of months due to wear and tear. Hopefully it was a one off and your replacement lasts a lot longer. x
