      I beg to differ. They do have a unique identity and even have their own language of a sort. Ofcourse how different they are will differ by individual, but, it is clear they do differ somewhat based on culture.

    I'm not sure if any EU country missions to the EU in Brussels are extraterritorial entities, but countries' missions to the United Nations in New York are certainly extraterritorial ... which does raise the question: can New York police enforce local laws inside the US mission to the United Nations? Or is that also recognized as a diplomatic mission??

      I dont think US State Department Civil Servants at US Mission at UN are foreign diplomats covered by the Vienna Convention. Most like its treated like a State Department building inside the US so yes local laws apply .

    London doesn't have all the embassy drama. Did you hear about when Saudi agents murdered Jamal Kashoggi in their embassy in Istanbul in 2018? He had been a Saudi journalist who had worked both in Saudi intelligence and for Saudi state media, then later essentially defected and became a journalist in other countries (a columnist for the Washington post) who was very critical of the Saudi government. He avoided going back into Saudi territory because he knew they didn't like him, but he had to go into a Saudi embassy once to divorce his Saudi wife so he could marry his new girlfriend, and, that one time, they drugged him, killed him, dismembered his corpse, and sent the pieces to someone to hide, all while his girlfriend was waiting outside, then lied and said he left soon after going in. Later, the Saudi government "found out" and punished some people they claimed were the ones behind the attack, but Turkey thinks the order came from higher up than Saudi Arabia admits, so this is an ongoing dispute between the two countries.

    To my surprise, there's actually a lot in Japan (including in Okinawa) that support the military base there. It just depends on the person. Some in Japan staunchly oppose ANY military, even the "Defense Force," and want to stay a purely disarmed nation on all fronts.

  • @Mr.Nichan

    This is fairly random, but I don't think you realize that Indian Reservations in the USA are immune to state laws and taxes, but their land is considered part of states, despite them also being considered sovereign nations by the US in some sense, despite not being immune to federal laws and I think taxes.

    • @slopehoke1277

      My favorite example is how the Navajo and Hopi nations handle daylight savings time.
      The Navajo don't follow it, but the Hopi nation (which is entirely surrounded by the Navajo nation) do. Due to each nation having an exclave within the other, your clock changes six times as you drive along Arizona 264. And (because Arizona also doesn't follow daylight savings time), you'd need to change it a seventh time if you started in Arizona to get there.

    • @Liggliluff
      @Liggliluff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's probably easier to just have it part of USA, so they don't need their own government and has the right and economic support of USA. But, as someone who likes when countries break up and form new countries, it would be pretty neat to see all Indian reservations break free and become sovereign nations. Similarly with the other reservations of Canada and other places. Imagine the number of countries going from the official 195 up to 250 something.

    • @kgd9725
      @kgd9725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At the end of the day the US Gov is sole Sovereign over all territory its military holds . Tribal treaties are mainly for local economic protection but we've all seen what any attempt at secession would lead to . And why would you be dumb enough to leave the richest country in the world where you enjoy special protections .

    • @Mr.Nichan
      @Mr.Nichan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samarnadra My parents lived in Tuscon in the 1990s. I very vaguely remember some story about state of Arizona trying to go onto some reservation and confiscate all the gambling stuff because gambling was illegal in Arizona, and it wasn't clear whether Arizona state law applies in the reservation, byt I feel like that would have been resolved earlier than that.

    • @corey2232
      @corey2232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kgd9725 True. The other reason why Indian/Native Reservations don't want FULL sovereignty is what it would do to their population & culture. Naïve people might think it would help protect their culture, but in reality it would lead to a huge amount of their people leaving for the US permanently. They already have this issue right now (calling it the "brain drain") but at least those people retain ties to their culture & region, and they receive tons of federal funding.
      Unless they became police states & forced their citizens to stay through threats of violence (think North Korea), people would leave for greener pastures & more opportunity. The issue isn't so bad now because people can come & go as they please, work in one area & come back to Navajo (or other) lands without issue. But put up hard borders, remove all Federal funding & operate as complete enclaves, you'd then guarantee poverty & people trying to leave for a better life.

    I've often heard that embassies belongs to the country that holds the embassy, but that's just not true. It still belongs to the country it's located in, but with international agreements, the country that it's inside can't enforce their own laws, and can't send in police or military without prior permission by those who use the embassy. But all embassies in Belgium still is Belgian territory. - Similarly, international airports still are part of the country, but by international agreements, people are allowed to be within the airport without the requirements of entering the country. But the Brussels Airport is still Belgian territory.

      This is correct, but as you said, the country who technically owns the land still can't send in police or their military (unless it's an official act of war). The host country treats embassy lands as essentially off-limits due to those treaties & agreements.
      If they failed to do so, it would highly discourage any countries from establishing embassies in your territory, even if you were allied.

    Haha the bases at Guantanamo and Diego Garcia aren’t “top secret”, there are reportedly some secretive facilities within them.
    Also, it’s interesting that although all military bases, and embassies, are nominally de jure sovereign territory, the only military bases (outside of military occupations) which are actually incorporated as overseas territories are the British Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, while the American Guantanamo base has defacto territorial status as well because the Communist regime in Havana does not recognize it.

    I live kinda near an active US military base in Germany, and while I've never actually been inside (I'm not sure I would even be allowed), some of the signs around the place are in English and some shops are very American.
    Before the pandemic, I used to go to the nearby movie theater because it's the only one in probably my entire state that shows movies undubbed. The target audience is American, so everything in that movie theater is in English (the signs, the ads, the movies etc). During the 2016 US election period, there were ads for Clinton and the Democrats everywhere lol.

    The Guantanamo Bay situation is pretty weird on both sides. The US helped Cuba gain independence (not solely for altruistic purposes or anything), signed a lease with the government to pay them, & had no issues for nearly 60 years.
    But a communist revolt overthrows the government, leaving them sending checks to a regime that despises capitalism & refuses to cash them...🤣
    I feel like Cuba's government should've just entered real negotiations & got way more money out of it. Instead of $4,000 a month, they could be getting tens of millions. Worst case scenario if you don't plan to cash the checks, you're making them account for additional funds & waste more money lol

    The ACT in Australia is an odd case, sure embassies must lease the land they are on, so must citizens. In Canberra, ACT we have no freehold land, our city creators were sucked in by Georgist land philosophy
    Though whole embassies pay 5% of the unimproved land value each year, citizens pay $0.05 each 99 years for their leases

    To be fair:
    Germany is completely surrounded by NATO members (except Austria and Switzerland) who are also EU members.
    Compare that to South Korea with North Korea right across the border or Japan with China across the sea.
    Why should Germany pay for American military presence, when there is no threat in a 1000km radius?

      @@electricpaper269
      One might make that argument, yes.
      But Germany is in a completely different situation than Japan or South Korea.
      - Germany and Russia are generally on good terms with another
      - There is a thick buffer of NATO and EU member countries between the two
      - The American military presence isn't even equipped to fight a conventional war. The US only uses Germany as a logistic hub and to operate their UAVs in the Middle East and Africa (because of the curvature of the Earth they can't do it from the US and need a relay station).

      @corey2232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @peter schwarz Uh... you realize West Germany flourished, and now Germany is again the leader of the EU & one of the largest economies on the planet right?
      USA gave Germany a fighting chance after WW2, whereas the USSR literally held East Germany under their thumb as an actual puppet state. Even after WWI, the US argued to forgive Germany of war repirations, but the other European powers put all the blame on them & demanded they pay for the war.
      I know it's the internet & people just casually blame the US for anything & everything, but try using some critical thinking some time.

    I'm not a lawyer, but the North Atlantic Treaty's article 5 doesn't really oblige members to defend another member under attack.
    The main point is, that an attack on one member is considered like an attack on all members.
    However, article 5 doesn't specify HOW a member state has to help.
    Essentially, a NATO member state is free to react to an attack in any way deemed appropriate.
    That could mean a member state send an armored brigade or just a letter of condolence.
    Fun fact: the EU has a significantly more specific and stronger mutual defence agreement.
    It's called Article 42.7 and says the following:
    (Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union). This clause provides that if an EU country is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other EU countries have an OBLIGATION to aid and assist it BY ALL THE MEANS IN THEIR POWER, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

    Nope.
    Airports are parts of the territories, there are just local laws that allow visa free transit.
    Same for embassies, local laws almost fully apply, however, the host state cannot use force against embassies and diplomats but it can cancel diplomat's immunities or even an embassy giving its employees some time to leave the country.
    A military base is more interesting thing but its status depends on the text of the treaty establishing such a military base.
    I'm surprised Baikonur was not mentioned. It's a city in Kazakhstan around the cosmodrome with the same name. Russian laws fully apply there for as long as this piece of land is rented by Russia.

    Before I even listen to this one: Maybe this should be re-titled to be vaguely grammatical. Possibilities: When does a country's land legitimately belong to another country? When can a country claim to own part of another country? When do countries land on other countries? Countries other to belong countries a does when?

      @Mr.Nichan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's fully grammatical if you fix the spelling. I think it was meant to be, "When Does A Country's Land Belong To Other Contries?". That being said, "When Does One Country's Land Belong To Another Country?" with both instances of COUNTRY being singular, might sound better and go with the subject of the video better, too.

    Also the map of French overseas bases is inaccurate. France has military bases in south-east Asia also due to the "overseas territories" it has in that area.

    Hey toycat, i was wondering can a country elect to be annexed by another country? Presuming that the referendum is legit and clean, does the country they elect to be annexed by have to do something? Will the annexation be recognized?

    • @corey2232
      @corey2232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If an actual country itself voted to dissolve its government & become a part of another country, yes... but that's highly unusual & would require the other country wants you in the first place.
      But countries don't typically vote to be annexed, they simply get annexed by another more powerful country. If it's an actual country with a functioning government, it's very unlikely they'd chose to peacefully give up their sovereignty, power & authority to another country (unless done so by threat of force).
      There are rare exceptions where a territory was a part of another country, then seeks to become part of another country for protection (like Texas declaring independence from Mexico, then requesting statehood into the US several years later), but even that's not common.
