As someone unfamiliar with fishing in general, what is John doing at 8:45 ? Is that how he kills the fish? And is he stabbing the gills so the fish drowns? I'm not asking this to be PETA, just curious about the technique compared to alternative ways to kill a fish. EDIT: Later in the video, he calls it bleeding the fish. It still seems like they're alive though when they start flopping around in the cooler.
It was cut across the gills to bleed out. When the cop interrupted me I wanted to get it iced because I wasn't sure how long he would stick around and it was hot out.
Thank you so much for putting this channel out there John. Haven't been fluke fishing since I was a kid, watched your video and went out on a party boat Sunday off Pt. Judith RI. Picked up 1/2 dozen fluke, including 2 nice keepers and some seabass. Tsunami Glass Minnow, Red/White w/ 4" Gulp was the winning combination. Good Stuff!
John Skinner Fishing a okay thank you! I'd love to meet up and fish with you sometime, I've been fishing sandy hook bay this season and have been catching some really nice fluke. I've gotten them up to 28 inches.constantly.
As much as I try I cant seem to stay vertical in my waters and constantly scope out, even in water as shallow as 8', have to run at least a 2oz. I was using Powerpro slick8 20lb I just dropped down to 15lb I am hoping that makes the difference.
I have this problem too fishing the bridges in Narragansett bay, even a 1 mph drift in 20ft of water I need 1.5 oz and up. I think there's a fast underwater current here
Hi John, just wondering if your rod and reel combination will work for offshore fishing? I have caught a 15" fluke today on Staten Island using Tsunami teaser, great tip! Thanks!
"I'll take care of the net. Go fish." That quote there speaks volumes. You're a great guy, Skinner. I just received my GoPro "wannabe" camera. Hoping to start capturing some of my own fishing footage...and maybe a few golf shots, too. Thanks for the inspiration!!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot the account password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
It's in the video description. This one has 4'' cut from the tip to stiffen it up. www.jandh.com/products/tsunami-classic-tscc-701h-casting-rods.html?rfsn=877572.3d164
Links to the gear are in the video description. Here's the bucktail I used. www.jandh.com/products/s-s-2-oz-john-skinner-swing-hook-fluke-bucktails.html?rfsn=877572.3d164
I love a calm day on the water like that. I prefer to have just the tide moving the bait vs the wind also blowing the boat. Nice job John. I liked the interesting bait combinations that you had on this day.
Thank you John for your tips.. I caught my first keeper.. 19 3/4.. I actually caught it on my break at work thank God the beach is down the block from my job lol 🤣🤣
John, Thanks so much for the videos and the books. I was drifting last weekend standing on the nose of my boat and when I gave them my best John Skinner hook set ; I had a crowd lol. Question- What are most of those fish measuring in at length wise...? Also, will you use larger gulp (4-6") in back bays too?
John Skinner Fishing thanks for the reply John! Do you have a patreon? I use S and S stuff and have your books already but I’d still like to contribute. I’ve 10x my fluke fishing production.
Nice fish John. I heard your reel clicking at the end and my Accurist is giving up the ghost after just a season and a half. Are you finding them unreliable as well? I love the flipping switch so it's hard to switch.
Robert Donohue I was gonna ask him the same question, I heard that as well, these reels aren’t designed for salt water, if you can get a season or two out of them for the price it’s not bad especially considering the flipping switch being reason we would keep replacing them. I think it’s worth it anyways.
I haven't had to replace any of the white ones. I hear that too on the video, although it's fishing fine. Just had a 20# bass on that this morning along with a great catch of nice fluke. I'll pay better attention next time out.
Thankfully the flipping switch on mine still works, but it won't engage if it's turned off. I assume the spring went on it but I've taken pretty good care of the reel since I've had it. I would pay up for an all metal gear model if they made one.
Explain please. Are you saying that because it's an aluminum boat? I googled that and wasn't convinced, but if someone knows it to be true, I'd be interested in the source so I could read up. I have a tin boat too.
just want to let you know I took your advice about finding tide and wind conditions that align pulled out a 10lb fluke and I didn't deviate from spots I went back to where I knew the bites were. but I noticed the bites were mostly on dead stick or slow and high jiggs if you bounced around too much it attracted more shorts
Duel 300s on an aluminum 32'er. Nice flounder, I'm from NC and the fishery does not seem to be what it is up in the northern waters. I bounce the same rigs that you do but not a master like you...Tight lines!
bobinsuffolk WHAT ARE YOU ?HIS DAMN SPOKESPERSON or MANAGER OR SOMETHING?I DIDN’T GO ON YOUR CHANNEL AND ASKED DID I ..SO STFU AND WHY EVEN SAY ANYTHING AT ALL ...HOW DARE YOU 😂
I'm guessing they're related. It gets confusing by me because there are winter flounder and summer flounder (fluke), but to our south they just call them flounder. Halibut are mostly on the west coast, but a few get caught in the northeast too.
Your Fluke/Flounder look more like small Halibut, with the longer mouth and lots of teeth. Here in the UK our Flounder have a more rounder mouth with a lot less teeth.Yours grow a lot bigger as well,a 2lb one over here is a specimen and a 3 pounder is exceptional.Love your vids John...
I sure wish I had the capital for the materials to build one of those aluminum beauties. I've been aluminum fabricating and welding for a very long time.
John, love your videos, great fishing BUT your friends both need better netting skills and net handling. Specifically, Never put the net in the water until the fish is near the surface. Also lift the net with the handle pointing up not horizontal. Again great videos and tips galore from all of your videos!
Yo dude! Nice video, very fun to watch! That first one you lost was a hefer dang.. I live in NC and do a lot of that style Fishing where you are getting off on little marsh banks. I wear Magellan Flats boots, academy's brand, you should check them out they're worth their weight in gold! A lot easier to walk on soft ground, and they keep your feet protected from oysters and sharp stuff
Hey John. I want to recommend a podcast to you. I just listened to the episode and I think it would be something you would be very interested in. It's an interview with Greg Myerson (World record Striper holder), and the show is called "Fish Nerds" (5-15-18 show). He has worked with the IFGA to create a Catch & Release record category. He says the guilt of taking that amazing, 30 year old, breeding fish's life was horrible. He has since donated the mount to a fishing related program for veterans. I would be super interested in getting this category introduced into LIs tourneys. Your awareness and input would be vital and carry a lot of weight within the community. I am trying to do my part by passing this information on to you, one of L.I.s most prolific anglers. Hope you will check it out.
I’ve complained about nets, and I finally spent the money for a great one,but never complained when it actually did what a net is supposed to do, but you are unique, pointing out a bad net when it actually did what a net is supposed to do.What do you complain about when things don’t work?
rick is no longer the net man....................u learn netting as a kid landing your dads fish and u better not miss it....lol go back to net school good man
I probably wouldve given up after the third miss......way to keep your composure.....too funny
great video and nice boat.my wife and I fish from our 12 foot john boat (for now lol ) but love being on the water. keep the great videos coming.

Thanks for the reply! I only found your channel yesterday, and I don't even fish, but I really enjoy how relaxing your videos are.
Good Stuff!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing that!
This place is incredible Congratulations, *beautiful* video. Have a very successful week.👍🎣🐟🐠
John...just getting into this....do you use weights to sink the line down?
Good video John...looks like a successful day on the water ....
Hey john how much would a 26 inch fluke weigh
Roughly 6.5-7#
John Skinner Fishing a okay thank you! I'd love to meet up and fish with you sometime, I've been fishing sandy hook bay this season and have been catching some really nice fluke. I've gotten them up to 28 inches.constantly.
Rainy and 46* in Va. today and longing for some warmer weather. Thanks for putting videos up, this pandemic is driving us all nuts.
John your partner needs net lessons. Nice trip.
Good sport-O there Rick, that smaller net is not bad to use, just gotta know how to use it. 😉. Otherwise, great job and great video!!!
Beautiful boat John, how hot does that get from being pounded from the sun?
It's no different than a glass boat in that regard.
Great video. I appreciate the Jaws reference
That net job😂. How fast was that boat, looks like it was doing 50 plus
Worst...net job...ever...but glad it worked out - love it when something goes wrong but you still get the fish! Love your vids, thanks.
As much as I try I cant seem to stay vertical in my waters and constantly scope out, even in water as shallow as 8', have to run at least a 2oz. I was using Powerpro slick8 20lb I just dropped down to 15lb I am hoping that makes the difference.
Go to 10# but more importantly use only a small swivel between the braid and the leader, nothing else.
I'm guessing you're fishing very fast waters? Even so, unless the wind is against the current, you shouldn't need much weight in shallow water.
I would agree with John as I overlooked other factors. And yes, a swivel.
I have this problem too fishing the bridges in Narragansett bay, even a 1 mph drift in 20ft of water I need 1.5 oz and up. I think there's a fast underwater current here
John are you going to make your video ads a little shorter.
I have no control over the length, only the number and placement. In general, I reduce the number TH-cam puts in.
400k boat and a 5cent net
What is the heavier rod that can handle 5 ounces
I use this one for that weight range: www.jandh.com/products/tsunami-classic-tscc-701xh-casting-rods.html?rfsn=877572.3d164
John Skinner Fishing what ounce does it hold up to
Hi John, just wondering if your rod and reel combination will work for offshore fishing? I have caught a 15" fluke today on Staten Island using Tsunami teaser, great tip! Thanks!
I have a link to that rod in the video description.
"I'll take care of the net. Go fish." That quote there speaks volumes. You're a great guy, Skinner. I just received my GoPro "wannabe" camera. Hoping to start capturing some of my own fishing footage...and maybe a few golf shots, too. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Rick: Did we lose him? John: Not yet, but we’re working it. I’m literally laughing out loud at that.
I fell off the couch laughing!!!!!
John Halkias Fishing hfgjkgdsshsdyfruhfglwqemr
Crabbing net.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I somehow forgot the account password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Benjamin Tony Instablaster ;)
One more question. Instead of a dropped loop I use a separate line for my teaser off one barrel swivel. Any thoughts on that ? Thank you
I don't like a longer dropper leader because it reduces the bouncing action on the dropper.
What rod are you using to catch all those fluke
It's in the video description. This one has 4'' cut from the tip to stiffen it up. www.jandh.com/products/tsunami-classic-tscc-701h-casting-rods.html?rfsn=877572.3d164
Great video John..keep em coming!
The relief after landing that first keeper!!
Do you let the fluke chew a second before you set the hook? It seems like you do from your videos. Thanks
Ok. 1 second. I'll confess. It's not really that I'm letting them chew. I want to feel that the fish has the jig before I bury the hook.
Way to hold that net like a church donation basket!
John
Where can I purchase a John skinner s&s bucktail?
Links to the gear are in the video description. Here's the bucktail I used. www.jandh.com/products/s-s-2-oz-john-skinner-swing-hook-fluke-bucktails.html?rfsn=877572.3d164
I love a calm day on the water like that. I prefer to have just the tide moving the bait vs the wind also blowing the boat. Nice job John. I liked the interesting bait combinations that you had on this day.
John, do you ever use the tsunami acid wrap rod ? I have my quantum on the acid wrap. A lot of fun and light
I don't like it for fluke. I prefer a stiffer tip.
I have good hooks on these bucktails... you don’t lie Jon
Is that rod modified to use 4oz bucktails?
Yes. I cut 4'' from the tip.
Ah interesting. Thanks!
You should show the fish back at the dock that's one of the best parts you always leave that out
John, what’s the heaviest size ounce you feel comfortable with on the tsunami classic 7ft MH ?
1.5, 2 at most
Thank you John for your tips..
Fish length on this trip mostly 20-26''. I use the larger gulps whenever I expect a good shot at larger fish.
John Skinner Fishing thanks for the reply John! Do you have a patreon? I use S and S stuff and have your books already but I’d still like to contribute. I’ve 10x my fluke fishing production.
Hey John....what do you recommend for a container to store gulp in, they always seem to leak? Thanks. Bill.
I've been using whatever they come in. One of the guys I fish with combines them, but I don't recall what kind of jar it is.
Billy McD yeah mine leak too. I found that buying the bags of gulp is better. They tend to leak less.

I use a jar from Costco that the nuts come in. It's probably about a quart size so fits a great mix of Gulp.
Mayo jar
Rick. I was hysterical watching that netting job. Great day and great video!
Nice fish John. I heard your reel clicking at the end and my Accurist is giving up the ghost after just a season and a half. Are you finding them unreliable as well? I love the flipping switch so it's hard to switch.

I was fishing off the north shore and I caught a fluke off the beach and it spit up tons of sandeels.
Nice video like the boat what is the beam on that boat seems very narrow between the console and gunnel bonus Whiting
We don't jig lures like bucktails enough..if at all for our smaller uk flounder and even plaice... I've got some jigheads to tie up... ;)
On the next episode of John Skinner Fishing.... The Challenge: Catching Fluke With A Butterfly Net
Duel 300s on an aluminum 32'er. Nice flounder, I'm from NC and the fishery does not seem to be what it is up in the northern waters. I bounce the same rigs that you do but not a master like you...Tight lines!
So whats a halibut?is it another name for fluke or flounder too?
bobinsuffolk WHAT ARE YOU ?HIS DAMN SPOKESPERSON or MANAGER OR SOMETHING?I DIDN’T GO ON YOUR CHANNEL AND ASKED DID I ..SO STFU AND WHY EVEN SAY ANYTHING AT ALL ...HOW DARE YOU 😂
Eric Villasenor different species of flatfish that are native to the pacific
Jacob Guy thank you for that info...

John Skinner Fishing THANK YOU FOR REPLYING BACK TO YOUR SUBSCRIBERS..it means alot..
For a big boat like that not sure if I would like that metal thunking sound. Good fishing as usual.
it's a shame one has to travel (in NYC) 4 hrs to Montauk to catch decent sized fish!
Overfishing and pollution has ruined inland waters..
Got a 100k boat and a 3.00$ net😂😂😂
keep the fish throw back the guy with the net.🐣😜🤡
The guy with the net finds the fish!
I would love to come fluke fishing with you. I'll pay for it.
I sure wish I had the capital for the materials to build one of those aluminum beauties. I've been aluminum fabricating and welding for a very long time.
Even though it was a pretty small net it was still one of the shittiest net jobs I’ve seen
Net was just too shallow.
John, love your videos, great fishing BUT your friends both need better netting skills and net handling. Specifically, Never put the net in the water until the fish is near the surface. Your level-line pawl or gear is going bad...
I lost 2 6+lbs fluke this season because the "Fluke net was too shallow"....Needless to say that net is NO-longer on the Boat;-)
How embarrassing for the guy with the net!
Richard Kohut hahahahaha - nicely done Rick :)
Ha! Thanks so much for the great day and putting us on the fish!
Rick used Joe Kim’s method of netting perfectly! Lol. #joekimschoolofnetting
Nice boat, horrible nets...maybe look for a *John Skinner Net coming to a tackle store near you..lol
It’s great that someone can find Something to complain about!!
The Net! That’s great!

Thank you for sharing
Alright it's official, that was the worst net job I've ever seen lol
Terrible netting!
Terrible net. Too shallow.
Yeah, funny as heck! Great video as usual John!
I'm drooling over that boat... Maybe next one
John your partner needs net lessons. Nice trip.
