- Iron Rations were issued to the British Army during WWI. "Alas Babylon" by Pat Frank is a classic tale of Survival, written in 1959 about a small town surviving a Nuclear War. It's probably one of the best Post apocalyptic novels I've read.
Iron Rations in this book refer to "Perhaps he should make up a small kit of delicacies. If the worst happened, this would be their iron rations for a desperate time. If nothing happened, it would all keep."

I was born in the 60s and my mother had watched the old movie Alas Babylon. That was our code if I was in trouble. She would always ask me over the phone, "Is it Alas Babylon?" This went on well into my 40s. She's gone now. Miss you Mom. I finally read the book after she passed away.
We took a large pack of straws, and sealed one end of each and filled up those with sugar, salt, mixed spices, dried cream, Tang, instant coffee, toothpaste, baking soda, liquid soap, individual vitamins, Tylenol etc. and sealed the other end, labeled them. Doesn't take up much room in the packs, and worth more than it's weight in gold to us, it's those little things that are going to be missed if you need to move in a hurry.
What did you use to seal them?
@@skh770 a lighter or small torch works... put the end in any press a book vice and melt the end then reverse to fully seal.

Great idea! Also note they sell different thickness of straws, so you could add additional items that would do better in a thicker pack. Also, those cheap paper straws filled with sugar and a little bit of flavoring, like cherry or grape? Buy a few bags of them and split them amongst the preps but be sure to place them double bagged in ziploc bags with a desiccant packet.
Being a old Irishman, I keep a pint of whiskey in my go bag !

A small amount of whiskey goes a long ways in flavoring jack rabbit, cat, dog, and other tough meats
One of the things I really liked about your episode today is that you are interrogating and exploring an older book, older sources. They are a wealth of information. Across the board even reading old science fiction books, are dystopian type of apocalyptic novels like you mentioned, our westerns, our old magazines, can you little tidbits of how people did things in the past that can be very relevant to present day survival and grid down situation. Are you being grid up situations. Treasures that are crumbling to dust everyday, but simply need an intelligent person to unlock them and make them relevant for today. What you've done with this novel, so thank you again
I read this book when in high school. It is what started my prepper pantry. It was an insightful book.

I also read this book in high school it was March 1979 during the 3 mile Island disaster . I came home from school made my own box of iron rations and put it in my closet, I found it when I went off to college a few years, I made an updated version of one and brought it with me it got me through a hard time in my freshman year.I still have my copy from high school and read it often even though it is outdated by today’s standards there’s a lot of great little nuggets to be learned from the simple little book
I read it in high school as well, maybe even before that in junior high, I'm not sure. Of course high school for me was in the 1990's which is a over a decade after another commenter, so I think it is safe to say the book stands the test of time. Of course I didn't just read it once either. I reread and reread the books I like and did so with this one. Another good book I read back then and I started rereading jut recently is Lucifer's Hammer.
Some other excellent books are One Second After and One Year After. Enjoy.
It was required reading. I think because Nuclear war was considered very likely back in my days. Even then they were spreading the propaganda that Russia was the threat.
LOL - warm up the cheese with the candle and you got spam fondue.
Actually, I would count this as an absolutely vital survival prep, because keeping up your morale is at least as important as your food supply.

A Bar of Soap! After months of not washing the morale boost of having a good soap down, and smelling normal again, would be massive! :)

Here in central CALIF not much water. When it hits us bad who wants a bath but a drink and cooking will be best.

when I went off to school, I made the mistake of putting a bar of soap in my foot locker with my bag of rice,

Bag separaterly - of its dried food, mylar bags. If other stuff, matches, soap, tinder etc then a ziplock will suffice - as long as your soap is dry before you bag it! :)

no books will replace growing up on kodiak island alaska since 1962 and no power or harsh winters,collecting water and fire wood,kill all you ate,fish,deer,elk,bear,crab, learned at an early age what our ancesters went through in 1800s,island in middle of pacific ocean,hunt and gather or go back to comfy lower 48,differnt today but back then harsh.
If this is a hard Christmas then this would make a great gift...
What a clever idea to bring the book to life. I also loved that book. I would have to have hot chocolate, and nail clippers, Reading glasses, and pictures of my family.
I loved this video! Fantastic ideas! Reminded me of a poster I saw once with a quote: if a man has only two pennies, let him buy a loaf of bread and a rose. The bread will keep him alive and the rose will give him a reason to keep living.
This would also be a great summer project for children to teach them about prepping and then break it out on a rainy day for them
Great book! One Second After is another very good book as well. It’s about an EMP and how Americans reacted, adapted and treated each other .
I began reading Alas, Babylon and you can feel the sense of urgency of the main character. Also how he realizes the little details he misses while stocking food and items.
You forgot the P-38 to open the can!!
It's been a couple of decades since I read Alas Babylon, but it was the book that got me into survival and prepping.
I could have sworn he stored his iron rations in the attic in a footlocker. When he was stocking up a woman commented behind him "Who buys 5 pounds of coffee?"
The biggest things I remember are the coffee and hard candy.
They made their own moonshine using sweet potatoes and the gas tank from the main character's car for the still.
Like I said, it's been decades, so I probably need to re-read it.

I sent many a package to my boyfriend and his friends aboard ship. About once a month. Packed it all in popcorn. He told me they ate the popcorn too!

@@maryellis9625 Reminded me of my experience in Vietnam. My mom would send me a package and used popcorn for packing material. One time a bag of chocolate chip cookies broke open and mixed with the popcorn. We ate all of it! Handfuls of cookie crumbs and popcorn and it was awesome 👍 LoL
Read the book 10 years ago. Sad how quickly the banker gave up. It did inspire me to keep more prescription glasses on hand.
Zenni optical makes for cheap prescription glasses. I was able to buy 6 pair for what my last US made glasses cost...... now I have extras in every vehicle, in my emergency bags, and at work.
That is possibly my most favorite book. I've read it thirty times at least and have the audio book on every portable device I own.
The best thing to learn from it is how the group changes and adapts to the various crisis that occur. They look out for each other, take care of each other and defend each other.

In WWII, my dad used to give his chocolate bar from his rations to a little German girl. He carried her picture in his wallet until the day he died. ❤️ This is an excellent idea. I’d love to read the book, too. (I’ve heard not to pack peppermint with any other foods as it will make everything taste like itself. Yuk.)
My dad was in WWll also. I remember the few stories he told and not being able to believe what they had gone through. My dad made it home and passed away from a heart attack 4 years after he was home. His nick name was battle ax. That generation was so amazing, so proud , so determined to protect the United States of America and I’m so proud of all of them. How i wish he was here to guide me but then I think I would never want him to see what’s happening now

Our local store still runs canned beans for.55 cents and canned corned beef for $2.89 so we buy a case of beans (different kinds) and at least 1 can of beef every month. It doesn’t take long to have a good stock of it.
Wow, I just saw corned beef at Kroger for almost $7 / can! So thats a great deal!

The fray bentos they used was much saltier then corned beef you get today. It was referred to as tinned dog. The hardtack or dog biscuits were not much better some of the boxes used by the Australians early in ww1 were dated from the boer war that had finished 15 years earlier.
I read that book in grade school and that is where I got my idea to have a few preps set back and learn bushcraft. It also showed me what a leader is and community can be.
I took to heart the issue of salt. Windsor salt is a big salt mine that is hour away by car. I am working on a novel where a person is traveling on the river with trade goods to get salt and go as far as Ingersoll trading for honey and cheese.
Canned cheese…excellent idea! I hadn’t thought about that in my preps, but now I’ll pick up a couple cans of it to add to the collection.
They also have package cheese! Dry summer sausage is good too.
At first I thought you meant things that would keep your blood iron up, so you don't become anemic. Canned black olives help with this since they have ferrous gluconate added to them. I bought a bag of ferrous gluconate supplement powder because of this. It's quite cheap, and capable of providing a nutrient you'll need in the even you cannot find red meat.

Raisins are good for low iron also. Bad for teeth..need to brush

Wow! I love this book. It was required reading in my elementary school. Required for a couple of reasons. One, my hometown is mentioned in it. And Two, I grew up during the cold war.

Alas Babylon was optimistic. And one of my favorite books as kid, right next to Starship Troopers, Have Spacesuit will Travel, and the Fuzzy trilogy on my shelf for 35 years. My iron rations: bullion (vacuum seal packets and cubes both, you can also get ham, vegi, sazon, fish, tomato, onion and more) along with ramen seasoning packs, gravy mix, spice mixes like taco and chili and dry rubs. Hard candy. Tea and coffee, sugar, creamer in packets, hot cocoa, Emergen'C, lemon and lime powder. Dried fruit, crystalized ginger. Salt, pepper, little bottle of tabasco. Most single serve condiment packs last 5+ years- pick what you like. This is to make you smile months if not years after the lights go out.
These are little luxuries. But there is a big luxury. Four cans of turkey spam, two small cans of cranberry sauce, two cans of gravy, packs of mashed, packs of stuffing, and one can each of cherry and apple pie filling. Thanksgiving, when really needed, stored in two equal packets with one separate from the other iron rations.

ok so I liked every thing you suggested. But when you said pie filling I was happy to see it. I started buying pie filling long ago, and I make as much apple stuff as I can, and I can it. Because, I like oatmeal? But I get tired of it real fast, plain. Thats why I like applesauce, a couple spoons of that with a sprinkle of cinnamon and Its all good. But I dont know how to store ginger, I didnt think about crystalizing it.

Couple of those small water pouches would be nice. Sometime cleaning water can be difficult. Would be nice to have already clean water ready for that coffee or tea. Great video and we will definitely have to read that.
I made a 72-hr food jar in one of those empty Costco pretzel containers - it's not as compact as the iron rations, but I felt good about it. I also bought bottled water to last 3 days at 3L a day. It's for a different purpose, if I had to leave home quickly in bushfire season. When I started shopping for things it's amazing how my eyes were opened to what was available. Things you could eat straight away without heating - just emergency food, supplemented with Sustagen and a shaker.
Now I'd like to make iron rations, just replicating what you showed as the original British army version, I drink tea anyway.
The original British marching ration, was 1 pound of hardtack or crackers, 1 pound of canned corned beef or bully as they called it, you could substitute SPAM or canned chicken, etc., tea, sugar, salt and pepper, and I think that was it. Most militaies at that time, had something similar.
Check out Steve1989mre. He had a ration that was from that time period.

Just a thought but, since Christmas is coming up it would be a good idea to make some of these up as Christmas gifts instead of throwing money away on things that wouldn't be as life saving or as valuable in a grid down or even worse situation for a friend or loved one. Just a thought👍😎🇺🇸

Alas, Babylon and One Second After are my favorite prep novels. I am skeptical if the way people are today, if we could band together like in Alas.

For years, I carry a P-38 on my keyring. They're small, and very handy and take up no space.
An army can opener like the other person said. Super small. Can get about fifteen of them on amazon for three bucks.
I got a large package of both the small and larger army can openers on Amazon, maybe 20 of each. A pair, one small and one larger, goes into each grab and go bag, each backpack, a mixed can of various bottles of salt, pepper, and spices, and anywhere else I can think of. That way there will be some available no matter what.

I have my own P-38, and a P-51 packed away in the go bag.

A small flashlight is my husband’s choice, mine is chocolate covered cherries!
Hot chocolate is a must for me - it satisfies my female chocolate cravings .
Hard candies of peppermint , butter scotch , chocolate werthers , cherry life savers , etc, dropped in a cup of hot chocolate is AWESOME .
A little rice in your salt will keep it from clumping it works, my mom had large Tupperware salt shaker she put it in.
This just makes me want to go watch Jericho again :)

As a senior, aged 16, in high school in 1972, my Chemistry and Physics teacher loaned this book to me. I got so absorbed in it, at that tender age, that there was a point that I remember thinking that I needed to call my girlfriend and in my mind I went, " Dummy, you can't call her, all the phones are down. " LOL I was really into the story. I listened to it again a few years ago, as the other kind of "senior", on audiobook form and I didn't get quite as swept away, but I still enjoyed the book and I recommend it to people all the time. It has that plausible feel to it that "On The Beach" has. Read that one if you haven't already.

Great idea....This is kind of like my locked tool box with treats....I had to start locking things away because everyone would be sneaking into my treat stash.........Just a couple tips....make sure the candle is unscented or it will taint your food... The votive will need a holder once you light it or it will melt all over and waste the wax... You could put in tealights that have the metal holder already...Get unprocessed local honey because it is healthy and then you can use that with the alcohol for cough syrup..Thanks for this thought inspiring video....I was toying around with making emergency backpacks for my kids but this may be more cost effective. since money is tight right now.
Maybe a few squeeze packets of Velveeta cheese and 1 water bomb bottle would be better served in that case. Very good info tho...I love that hard case and I think this would also be GREAT Xmas gifts for friends and family
Smart with the canned meat. I remember how valuable that sort of thing was in the book. I'd probably wish for a genuine canned hap rather than spam but after months living off storage food and what could be gleaned from the wild I don't think I would be picky. Remember how in the book he made the mistake of stocking up on fresh meat instead and so when they lost power they had to salt and dry what they couldn't gobble down. They invited a bunch of people over to help eat it by having a barbeque. He also had to rush back to the store for the salt to salt down the leftovers because he hadn't bought it when stocking up at the last minute. Of course later they lucked out by finding directions to a source of salt in an ancestors' journal or they would have really been up a creek. Actually I think they went up a creek(river) to get the salt so maybe I spoke too soon.

@@JEHOVAH485 you are correct. Keystone canned meats are absolutely wonderful. Best canned meat I have ever had. Prices are good as well.
"Iron rations" - Good idea. I remember my dad talking about K-rations during WW2. These were issued to frontline troops and essentially everything was dried and powdered. Powdered eggs, powdered cheese, powdered everything. "Just add water" as the phrase goes.
Dad said that after a month of K's, he and his buddies would go on a "midnight requisition" run, and trade their K's for C-rations. Having heard so many vets complain about C-rations, I asked why. He said after a month of K's, C-rations were gourmet fare.
Iron rations for me would include coffee, a good tea, sugar, a preserved meat, rice, and a dehydrated vegetable. The sugar would probably be as powdered honey. The meat would probably be as pemmican. The vegetables would probably be mixed. And I would seriously consider adding a clarified and dehydrated butter. Without being clarified, butter has a limited self life. Once clarified, butter has a very long shelf life, and if dehydrated even longer.

1 Ziploc Pill Pouch of Salt
1 Bic Lighter

Have you seen or tried sealing ‘goods’ in drinking straws. Crimp one end with heat & pliers… fill with spice/meds/fire starter… seal open end & label.
Straw can be cut to size & reused .
Make up a bunch, label them & drop into old prescription bottles. Every car can use a kit!
Great book and video, Sootch. Growing up overseas, we had Kraft or Bega cheddar cheese in can. Useful in tropical weather compared to the foil wrapped cheese in a box or Cheez-whiz in a jar. Add some Vienna sausages or some canned sardines and we got a 3-course meal to spice up those rice, beans or dehydrated potatoes.
I used to buy Bega canned cheese (in Asian Supermarket) but have not been able to find any for about 2years.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting. I think the beef cubes were used as a drink..I seem to remember when I was a kid my mum boiling the water to put in a mug with a cube especially after illness.
Great little idea! Morale is so important. Coffee, tea, whiskey, chocolate, meat of some sort, a candle and matches or a lighter. Stuff to make life bearable in a disaster.
Your recreation of the basic iron rations remind me a lot of the Vietnam era C-ration. Canned meat, cheese, crackers, fruit cocktail or cake, "John Wayne" chocolate bar, cocoa powder and cigarettes.
Good video! A really nice idea, even bringing a bit of hope to the prepper horizon. It could get bad, but this would be a twinkle of light-of better times-perhaps times to come.

It already has. I never realized how people could fight over toilet paper? I said, years ago, just wait. In a few years they'll be going from fighting over toys at Walmart, to fighting over toilet paper or beans. It'll be the same people, too. It was.

Turns out it was one of the books I got rid of some time ago because it was water damaged beyond saving along with several other books. I'm gonna check the local used book store this weekend for it. Fingers crossed.

Awesome Kit !! As a woodland firefighter in NW twice got seperated fm main group. As Team Leader found water 2 drink but no food for 3.5 days. Then We found wild strawberries& onion's. Odd combo but was wonderful treat. I am a big coffee drinker & would dream of it nightly. Day 5 We finally walked our way out using sun & star's @ nite 2 navigate. Once back 2 civilization stoped @ Mc D & ate three 1/4 pounders & XL fries. Don't do that to yourself not pleasent. LOL
4got 2 add was long B4 dell fones & tech'e GPS widget's etc !
Once on a RE supply run on a deuce and a half we stole a big can of blue berries from another company and ate them. Still a memory from ‘68 or ‘69.

Great additions to our "iron rations" as emergency food kit. Thank you for the book review and the emergency rations needed in any emergency.
Canned cheese and butter can be found on Amazon. Probably a better choice than the cheese 'sauce'. Easier to cut and eat. Yoder's is a good source for canned dairy and meats.
I've done this in a 5 gallon bucket for me and my wife and it ended up being enough that we could eat for two weeks off of the one bucket.
What did it contain?
@@mrspin3315 2 lb of beans, two packs of Idaho loaded potatoes soup, a gallon Ziploc of instant grits and oatmeal, a quart of ham tvp ( textured vegetable protein ), multiple packs of chicken and tuna, 6 pounds of dehydrated mixed vegetables, 2 lb of beef jerky, beef bouillon cubes, a few Mountain House breakfast and a pound bag of butterscotch candy oh and multivitamins,Seasonings and electrolyte and recovery drink mixes.
We also have a creek that runs through our farm and we also have an acre and a half pond so water is not an issue for us.

This is a cool and fun idea. All your choices are great, and Spam really is a good hard-times protein source. Many of my prepper channels have put out Spamtember recipes and they are tasty.
I try and buy the low sodium spam when I can, hoping to avoid too much salt. Sliced thin and fried really crispy (for that bacon flavor) with melted cheddar and mustard is my favorite way. Yummy!
Think I'll grab me some crown toyal and curl up with a nice Alas Babylon book! :-). I have to say. You've never steered us wrong with books!

That's one of my favorite books and I recognized the concept from the title. Little did I expect that your video would actually be about the "iron rations" in the book!
This was the time before cliff bars and Gatorade powder. We have more useful options these days, though bullion is still useful for flavoring water.

Certainly not a forever food, but the topic of the video was about rations kept by soldiers for emergencies. Not all disasters are post apocalyptic. In that regard, it's not unreasonable to consider a food with a six month shelf life as a valuable option.

Bullion cubes are also vital to keep on hand for recovering from injuries or illness, when you can't handle solid food but need to stay hydrated and get some nutrition down. Not sure why more folks don't store pemmican. It keeps a long time and has tons of nutrition - more than jerky.
The beef bouillon cubes were used as a hot drink in UK rations. Great video as always.
I've watched this about 3 times and this seems like a fun, inexpensive way to add to preps and make a few of them and sprinkle them around to various caches.

Good morning, excellent video . I had forgotten that when I was in uniform I always had some "iron rations" in my load out or as we called it our "webbing". We use to get hard cereal biscuits in our rat packs and they were to hard to eat just by them selves but really handy when on piquet and you could pull them out and have something to keep the spirits up as the dawn approached. I have a little metal box in my EDC bag. With tea, coffee, hot chocolate powder, sugar and milk....
It came in handy a lot of times. Not only for me but for others too. So it's not only a thing to consider for the bug out bag, but also in EDC :-D
Chamomile tea bags, Folger's single-use coffee(it's in tea bags, not instant), swiss miss hot cocoa, Emergen-C drink mix, sugar and salt packets, maple/brown sugar instant oatmeal, dried fruit, dehydrated mixed vegetables, beef jerky, Knorr rice sides, toilet paper, moist towelettes, mini bottles of liquor.
A lot of great ideas in the vid and the comments. I think I would add cooking spices in straws. Also, fire starter and strike anywhere matches in straws.
WHat a lot of people aren't aware of is that plain old Velveta is shelf stable and good for several years, it's also available in individually wrapped portions as well as the larger blocks.

It is a great book! I have read it multiple times since the early 70s.
Like most Old Heads, I keep my first ever P-38 can opener (got in 1978 when I was in Basic Training at Ft. Knox) but those openers last a LONG time but I suggest you securely tape a P-38 opener on top of whatever can you'll need it for. Like I said they take up little to no space and they are cheap enough to buy in groups of 20 or more at a time.
I'm told they can even be used as a fishing lure. But here in the desert southwest of AZ, not much fishing to be found but I'd STILL have a bunch of those can openers available to me for use in a pinch.

Fantastic novel, was required reading in FL high schools at the turn of the century... I hope it still is.
I have dyslexia and it's difficult for me to read and write. Last summer I finally got audiobooks. This is the first book I ever listen to an audio. A truly good apocalyptic novel. Even back then the writer knew about the shortage of toilet paper.
I live very simple and usually out of a tent or vehicle. Right now i'm borrowing a cabin to live in for the winter. I do have power and really good sat. internet but i still have no running water, i poop in a luggable loo and wash myself by heating water on my cooking kit which is a simple one burner butane stove..I'm also a wildland firefighter here in the PNW and this kit is way better than what we are given to eat. I love this.
My father use to collect and fill the small ammo box life bout. Supplies it was two boxes To give officers in his Airforce base/unit one painted white for first÷aid the other Orange with a 40 inch cable tying the two together with a removable ring to use to keep afloat The Florida keys was last then 10 .miles away

Well a lesson here is that when you move house, give some thought to what your selected area might be like in a disaster or SHTF situation, and make sure your preps compensate for the weaknesses.
A s a Brit tea , sugar , a little powdered milk & a can of bully beef is essential for our morale. 😊

For my kit I’d go with:
-couple small battles of spirits
-some sardines
-MRE wheat snack bread
-MRE jalapeño cheese spread
-MRE peanut butter
-MRE blackberry jam
I think “morale booster” is key description here so that means items such as the Folgers packets and creamer packets in the kitchen cabinet, and the kids’ crayons in the closet, find a new home together in a new Dollar Tree plastic container (not the one with shoe laces and fly tape) dedicated to cheering up the family, not the Noah’s Ark items mentioned above.
I had to flip and flip for two nights to find “iron rations” reference.
