You know a show is incredible when rewatching it somehow makes it even better. On the surface, this scene seemed almost random and most certainly confused many watchers, however after the story unfolds throughout the next few seasons and we see the depressing backstories of Reiner and Bertholdt, the Marleyan Warriors, we realise just how much anguish was in their eyes in these scenes. You can see how mentally torn Reiner is, compounded by his “split personality” where he sees himself simultaneously as a Warrior and a Soldier, and the almost childlike fear in both Reiner and Bertholdt’s eyes as they are forced to transform and take Eren. Truly amazing character development and storytelling from Isayama.
Berthold in that entire scene is fucking hilarious. "Reiner what the fuck are you doing don't fucking tell him" Eren: "I think you guys are tired" Berturtle: "haha yeah"
Nah, I don't buy Reiner's argument that they didn't know about anything. In fact Reiner was the one who WANTED to keep with the mission going. They killed hundreds of innocent people directly and thousands indirectly from Paradis. Reiner dissociative personality is the pure proof that they knew what they were was wrong.

@@robielastrella5606 Eren couldn't agree more. He slept under the same roof as the enemies and ate the same food as them. But I think the current Eren since his rampage in Liberio wasn't his own will, rather it's the past predecessors' of the attack titan, or the attack titan itself. You aren't wrong about him dying is the only way that would unite the world though. It was obvious his death would be inevitable after what he did in Liberio. But if it's not that kind of story where the protagonist did the wrong thing for the right reason and ends up dying in the end and Eren not being manipulated by the attack titan through the past holders, then the reason why he did those things is either that He is conscious about the ideal of the attack titan and he's just going with flow instead of against it, given that Eren's will is unrivaled, or it's really Eren that we grew up with that's committing genocide out of anger and his will to be free pushed him to commit such an act. Also, I might be wrong about his inevitable death. Anything could happen, even the unimaginable. Afterall, it's Isayama we're talking about. We'll just have to see how it'll end in a few months.

Eren going from skeptical, to confused, to bewildered, to sad and then angry?… such an amazing buildup of him transitioning from a bystander to summoning his titan and pounding Reiner. 10/10 scene man
Eren knew their identities before this scene. Just like Annie, he didnt want to believe it so he nervously said that they're just tired. I dont remember if the anime explained that, but while I was playing the game, they added that detail.

The greatest Mikasa moment. Yes, there are potentially many. But she is fighting here to her fullest. No Ymir headaches or anything just her abilities and trying to save Eren.

@@Vybnn It's not about language supremacy. It's the quality of the voice actors. Japanese voice actors are extremely talented people who train all their lives to get to where they are. Somehow, English voice actors always turn out to be mediocre/sub-par. And whenever a scene calls for loud emotions with lots of screaming and shouting, English voice actors seem to fall short. Another turn off for me is the American pronunciation (more like mis-pronunciation) of names. Makes me jump out of my skin.

After watching the latest season , I sympathize with Reiner , what makes this anime so unique is that , there are no villians they are just on different sides fighting for survival
And sometimes it's just because of love. Spoiler Ymir Fritz was in love w the king, but she couldn't do anything but abused and blinded, even couldn't end her own curse.
You know Reiner really broke my heart because he was one of my fav characters. Then he pulled this stunt, but after I found out that he was just a brainwashed kid I forgave him.
@KadenHartley not really, it's hinted at that him and Zeke fought about it multiple times and Zeke ended up winning, threatening to feed him to another titan. Rewatching the series now, its why I think they chose to move when they did because they saw the beast titan kind of like a signal maybe that they are taking too long.

The voice acting didn't missed a beat. The animation is well paced! I can't even described it anymore, I'm out of words. Masterpiece scene.
Now, after the start of the final season, I just feel bad for Rainer. He was an honest and ambitious boy, who wanted to fullfil his duty and make the world a better place, but ultimately found himself in the role of the evil he wanted to protect the world from.
There is nothing more badass than when Bertoldt says “Are we doing it?! Now?! Right here?!” 3 years leading up to this one pivotal moment. This scene is one of my favorites. What an amazing show.
Fun fact, this line also appeared in the parody series Junior High, with the same actor and the same performance. The funny part of this fact, is that Junior High appeared on TV at 2015, while this scene wouldn’t even be in production until 2016. So technically, this animated scene is the serious parody of the funny parody of this scene.
You know is a good anime and scene when you come back so many times despite knowing the outcome. I love the set up, motivations, characters and music as well of tone that sets up this wonderful scene
One of the most powerful moments in the anime. I come back to a few of these scenes every so often and they're just as good as the first time I saw them.
I hope one day they invent a neuralyzer so I can erase my memory of watching this anime and then watch it again then repeat the process until my brain is fried.
I used to hate them too...but after season 3...I don't know anymore...but still, they must pay for the actions they've done. I know they are forced to do so, but that is just life. Face the consequences.
@epileptic zepra Are you saying he should stop suffering now? All the people who got eaten alive, did nothing wrong to them but they had to die for the sake of his family. Imagine if that happens to your love ones. Reiner's suffering doesn't end until his death, if he can die anyway. He will keep suffering until Ymir's curse takes him. That is the consequence and nothing anyone say will not mean he has redeemed himself.
@epileptic zepra So when someone told you something is bad, you immediately think that thing is bad without confirming it. Ignorance is not the same as innocence. You are mistaking your sympathy. I bet if the lives in season 1 was shown as tragic, you would immediately change ur mind again. Idiots have this tendency to change their mind whenever a different perspective is shown. I bet if they showed you Hitler's side of story, you would easily go on his side. That's how gullible you are.
@@reianvase6683 your absolutely right. They’re selfish, ruthless, sadistic mass murderers. I could see it coming from Annie, but Reiner? Those goddamn traitors! I bet they’ve never felt compassion in their entire life. Especially Annie, I bet she’d watch humanity burn as long as she gets to see her father. I can’t believe she had the audacity of apologizing to dead corpses in Trost. The way she cried about Marco, she could have dropped the act and smile as he got devoured. The way she crushed scouts one by one, their final moments in fear and anguish all while Annie felt entertained. She’s a tyrant, enjoys having lives at her disposal. Reiner pretending to be a good comrade, how could he go day by day seeing the faces of the people which lives he destroyed. It makes me sick just thinking about those monsters. All the pain, suffering and death they caused, and all for what? Their families? Did they even for second think about the families of everyone they murdered? @@CaylexT One could say that it was Reiner's mentality broken officially cause on one hand "hes a soldier" but on the other hes a "warrior" so it's like split personalitys in 2 episodes after this one ymir basically breaks it down.
i think that the flagpole breaking meant a big noise, alerting everyone of possible danger of him transforming given that the scouts already knew about them being titans. Because of that, next scene Mikasa is already getting her sword out thinking that he was about to go titan mode, and he realizes that they already knew about their secret right there
theres two ways i look at it symbolism - a flag has broken, ie a bond has ended. their ruse of being on team humanity is over. the pole could also represent the bridge between rainor the person and rhainerd the image. the wall it was erected on still stands and represents his original goals, his true values and true self image, while the flag represents nearly the opposite, his chosen path, his pseudo image and the character he believed he was. what else i find interesting is that the flag didnt just snap and fall off, it hit every corner of the wall on its way down their literal reactions - they all suspect bert and ernie are the titan culprits. everyone looks to the flag snapping because they are hypersensitive to anything at this point, even the noise of a flag pole breaking in a place sound shouldnt carry well, had them all tense up and brace themselves. milksauces face is stoic at that moment, but her hand rattles on the blades grip. they are all on edge, holding their breath, waiting for something else to happen and immersing the viewers the same way

@@LookAtThisClown. Ah, then I must have missed it in the scene. She did kind of hesitate when she wanted to stab Bertholdt. Thanks for letting me know!
yes!! watching this video again after the story of the origin of titans has been explained in the anime, I can understand that they are not even bad. It all makes sense now. They were brainwashed by marley people into thinking that Eren and all those humans in the island were "demons". But now, 3 years living with them, Reiner and Bertholdt realize that they are actually good, innocent people...; Reiner even said he doesnt know any more what's right, or who's right.... but he cannot just abandon the mission. Such a great plot!
In the manga when Reiner is having lunch with his family and they talk about devils beyond the walls, Reiner actually thinks to himself saying they werent actually devils at all
well to be honest with you Isayama already hinted so many times that there are no bad guys just hero at each perspective who did what they have to do in order to survive and for their love ones
Reiner and Bertholdt are mentally torn from learning that Ymir was the one who killed their friend, prolonged secrecy, and getting too attached to their future enemies. Annie was smart to avoid too much contact with everyone, though she was unfortunate to be revealed first
Annie tried to remain aloof so wouldn't befriend anyone... but she failed as well. She couldn't bring herself to kill Armin, which led to her capture. "I have failed to become a warrior..."
when she says "i have failed to become a warrior" take a look back when she has flash backs of her father, telling her to stay strong and what not. SPOILER(maybe) i think being sent on the paradise mission was a test of some sort and if she failed her father (and parents) would become bombardment titans for marley. evidence when she fails at capturing eren and fighting him she cries.
For both sides it’s the same, on the Walls side it was just Human vs Titan good vs bad no questions asked, and for the Eldians at Marley, it was just Them Vs Paradis no questions asked. Then suddenly everything starts to change and now there aren’t any bad guys or good guys, they’re all just people that in one side was brainwashed into thinking the other side were devils, and the walls side is just trying to survive in a world that despises there existence for no reason except for their ancestors actions that they didn’t even know happend.
And it mirrors perfectly what Eren himself tells him four years later. Put in an impossible situation, pushed by an ideal to commit atrocities they never wanted to do, having been given no other option than to fight to the bitter end. I swear the continuity this series has is impressive.
This proves that they weren't really evil. They genuinely thought of Eren and the rest as comrades, so much so that eventually they coudn't remember what was right and wrong.
If you read the manga (minor spoilers if you haven't so stop reading) it actually goes to show that there are no 100% "evil people" in this anime, just people with their own duties to fulfill.
"Hey, Eren, you know how those abnormal Titans knocked down the wall, crushed your house, and let a bunch of other titans inside, one of which ate your mom and ruined your life forever?" "Yeah?" "That was us." "... Oh." "Yep." "Wow." "Yeeeep." "..." "... So, we're cool, right..?"
This show really was blessed to have been animated by WIT. There's no way it would've been half as famous without WIT. Shame the company got screwed by the manga production committee. Japan really needs laws to protect its animators
I really love how Isayama decided to have Reiner reveal his identity to Eren like this. It's really close to human nature and how it would actually happen in a real-world setting. Imagine if you've been cheating on your partner for a LONG time. You've been living through your own guilt and feel horrible about yourself. At one point people often reach the "FUCK IT I'M JUST GOING TO SAY IT" because they want to free themselves from their own hell. So I think this reveal is so genuine.
How it's reveled in the manga it's even more awesome. The bubble is more or less on the background (like a side character speaking with an other side character) while Hange conversation is the focus of the panel. You have to do a double take to make sure you didn't miss anything
@@LuisSoto-fw3if What they did for the anime was pretty much the same thing. It was said in passing, with low volume and at a distance as if it weren't critical info You'd do the double take as well
@@tinybabybread yes, but part of it it's a full scene where Eren and Raynaaaar are the sole focus. You still do a double take, but if IIRC, in the manga everything is done as background and it doesn't take the foreground until after the fact. I might be misremembering though

I love the small but significant things they chose to add here. The snapping flag pole not only represents a bad omen in eastern cultures, but in this scene I imagine it represents Reiner's will to keep up the facade snapping as well. Followed by the clouds parting, signifying his decision to come into the light about who he and Bertholdt really are. Every moment in this scene has a purpose, and I love it
I'm sure it means that symbolically, but I always thought it was meant to show how Hange and all them had stopped talking and were listening into the conversation.
I always loved the part around 1:10, when it becomes total silent just before revealing the biggest shock so far in the series. It's literally the silence before the storm.

Nah, I don't buy Reiner's argument that they didn't know about anything. In fact Reiner was the one who WANTED to keep with the mission going.

Those murdering psychopaths, it disturbs me when people are sympathetic towards them.
I love how the flag at 1:04 falls and makes a big echo, indicating that if everyone else heard that, then they heard Reiner's words
Wait. Is that what that meant? Besides the obvious one of their brotherhood breaking down.
@@CaylexT One could say that it was Reiner's mentality broken officially cause on one hand "hes a soldier" but on the other hes a "warrior" so it's like split personalitys in 2 episodes after this one ymir basically breaks it down.
@@ogreload1445 flagpoles breaking is also a bad omen
i think that the flagpole breaking meant a big noise, alerting everyone of possible danger of him transforming given that the scouts already knew about them being titans. Because of that, next scene Mikasa is already getting her sword out thinking that he was about to go titan mode, and he realizes that they already knew about their secret right there
theres two ways i look at it
symbolism - a flag has broken, ie a bond has ended. their ruse of being on team humanity is over. the pole could also represent the bridge between rainor the person and rhainerd the image. the wall it was erected on still stands and represents his original goals, his true values and true self image, while the flag represents nearly the opposite, his chosen path, his pseudo image and the character he believed he was. what else i find interesting is that the flag didnt just snap and fall off, it hit every corner of the wall on its way down
their literal reactions - they all suspect bert and ernie are the titan culprits. everyone looks to the flag snapping because they are hypersensitive to anything at this point, even the noise of a flag pole breaking in a place sound shouldnt carry well, had them all tense up and brace themselves. milksauces face is stoic at that moment, but her hand rattles on the blades grip. they are all on edge, holding their breath, waiting for something else to happen and immersing the viewers the same way

yes!! watching this video again after the story of the origin of titans has been explained in the anime, I can understand that they are not even bad.
@@soju4605 oh that's in the manga? and do you think we are going to see that in the anime in the next season?? well i guess so! thanks

Damn...Reiners monologue before transforming makes so much more sense now.. I understand..
For both sides it’s the same, on the Walls side it was just Human vs Titan good vs bad no questions asked, and for the Eldians at Marley, it was just Them Vs Paradis no questions asked.
Then suddenly everything starts to change and now there aren’t any bad guys or good guys, they’re all just people that in one side was brainwashed into thinking the other side were devils, and the walls side is just trying to survive in a world that despises there existence for no reason except for their ancestors actions that they didn’t even know happend.
yup

@@LuisSoto-fw3if I always have to do double takes when I'm reading the manga! Cause everyone looks the SAME hahahaha
