The '80s was a very special decade for so many of us who lived through it. Amazing music, drivers weren't texting, no social media nonsense... it had a different feel and I sure do miss it.
A-ha is a Norwegian group established in 1982. Frontman Morten Harket is still active today. All of this had been hand-drawn. This video has been truly revolutionary at the time. Best from Germany
Been an a-ha fan since I was 12, I’m now 51, a-ha are still active today. They hold two Guinness book records. Morten for the longest held note in a single release. And largest paying audience of 198,000 people in Brazil in the 90’s, where they out sold guns and rose and George Michael who both only got 60,000. It was part of a 25 date tour of South America for a-ha, to a combined audience of over 3 million people. a-ha have done many styles of albums including rock. One of the best live bands also. And morten harket has one of the greatest voices in music ever.
Was about to mention their concert in 1991: "A-Ha set a Guinness Book World Record by playing for the largest paying audience in the world: 198,000 people at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil."
Listen, I'm 53 nearly 54 and totally at a loss as to how Dick Ghastly and Ren were fighting for number one spot. @@alandoust551 If you want to classify Thriller as a “music video” then I agree it is the greatest. But Thriller to me is more of a short film than a music video, and that’s the way I have always thought about Thriller.

@@doomhunter697 True, and animation in general is obviously even older, but these technical innovations had not been used in a way that is so artistically linked to the lyrics and the story being told in a music video before. What makes it such a technically innovative video is not using a new technique, but using a well-known technique in such a unique way.
A-Ha were worldwide massive, they got money chucked at them to make amazing videos like this. It helped that Morten Harkett was more than a little attractive to the ladies too😂 He has a brilliant voice.

They’re from Norway. They’re definitely not a one hit wonder band, although sometimes that can be a matter of taste. They released their final album two years ago. There are definitely similarities in this band’s early 80’s music and other synthesiser based European pop bands from that time period. In the 1980s MTV was huge and a lot of filmmakers tried their hand at making music videos and trying to innovate in different ways. As others have commented, this video was like nothing most people had seen, with the combination of live action, comic-book style art, and animation all blended together. The song was very catchy, of course, and the combination of eye-popping graphics and that earworm of a tune made it something that was in constant rotation on MTV when it dropped.

When I was in high school in the 80's,, MTV was so great. The videos were amazing. I could not wait to get home from school and see the new released videos. I graduated 1987... Greatest must decade...
A-ha has been one of my all-time favorite bands since the 80s when this song came out. Sadly they are mostly considered a one-hit wonder in America (after their 4th album they stopped bothering to release their albums in the US, despite being massively successful overseas), but they continued to put out just incredible music over the years.
The 80's saw the advent of the classic Synth... but there really wasn't a lot of variety there yet, so many 80's bands sound similar because they were all using the same synth, more or less. There were still bands doing the classic rock thing, but the New Wave movement really brought Synth to popularity. Many acts from the 70's, like Jefferson Starship, would reinvent themselves in the 80's with a new sound, always chasing the popular trends. Phil Collins is credited with developing this very unique 'Gated Reverb' drum sound for his album in the early 80's that EVERY artist was using afterwards. There is a very cool documentary video on it on You Tube.
The video of The Sun Always Shines On TV starts as a follow-up to Take On Me, same girl and same graphics. Musically it's basically producer Alan Tarney living his heart out and turning it into an epic sound production 🙂
This video was like nothing we’d ever seen anywhere. It was mind blowing and damn I miss 80’s fashion. Everyone always looked like they were dressed up.
Ok. That last scene…a lot of people, even from that time period, didn’t know that the last scene, while he’s banging into the walls, was an homage to a scene out of the film “Altered States” where the character was fighting to pull himself back into his current multi-cell structure instead of the single cell structure that he got to under hallucinogens and floatation tanks. th-cam.com/video/wkPM4M6bnB4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ih9goHniQLUKPtMF
I almost never see anyone drop this bit, and I'm always tempted to. I sometimes think I'm the only one who remembers Altered States, so thanks for dropping the reference for me. :)
This has been in movies. You might recognise another version from Deadpool. Morten has been on The Masked Singer Uk and still has that incredible voice. I spotted him week 1.I was so luck to see them in Liverpool, possibly their first UK tour.
The video was revolutionary in the 80's and won awards. The song is fantastic and they basically became one hit wonders because of the video. I watched it over and over and over it fascinated me. Way before CGI....this was during the Max Headroom days on MTV. Max Headroom was the 80's version of CGI.
i am from the same town in Norway as Morten. We went to the same highschool and sang in the same youth choir i. our church back in the early eighties. Morten played the base guitar in the choir band. We could hardly believe it when we saw A full page interview with him in our local news paper in Asker. Little did we know how famous Aha would become. Remember back in the day Norway had only one channel owned by the state television companh, So when mtv and the music videos started broadcasting in Norway it was quite a sensation, - and especially when it involved one of our own becoming famous. Just a little reflecti9 down memory lane, from Oslo, Norway…..
You're exactly right, BP!! The late 70s and eighty was when bands really started exploring synthetic sounds!! Lots of electric keyboards, synthetic drums, etc!! This is such a classic song from my teen yrs!!! ❤
80 is the beginning of the era of the synthesizer piano. There weren't very many different ways to make nice sounds. That's why the sounds of the rhythm sound similar.
BEST MUSIC VIDEO EVER! Great song and the video was so ahead of its time with the stop action animation and mixing the animation with real life, amzing!
Wow, I didn't even notice the "80's beat" to many of the 80's songs, but you're very correct. It opened my eyes. As for the video and song, I've always loved it! Even the video is still amazing!
This is one of those songs that movies and tv shows put in the background to establish that we are in the 80s. That’s probably where you have heard it.
I understand what you are saying. I graduated in early 80's and love its music, but most of it has a distinct sound, even the country side. Love what you do.
So iconic. One of the best videos of the 80's. The part where Morten breaks out of the comic at the end still gives me goosebumps. 38 years later... Damn, man. It was yesterday.
I remember when this first came out on MTV, iconic, we were all mind blown with the video, it was so cool! These songs have seeped so deep into pop culture, movies, remixes etc...you prob have heard it before.
I do enjoy watching/listening to your reactions. What I love most is not knowing the name of an artist you’re featuring and then “Oh yeah” just like this song it all comes back!!! And you’re not wrong about “the sound” being familiar to the time period. Yes, a lot of 80’s music is distinctive and yes, many times you mention thinking you’d maybe heard the song in a movie and usually you’re correct.
Damn, BP, blows my mind at some of your musical blindspots. Crazy that you'd never heard this? Glad you're slowly working through correcting things one video at a time.
When he said all the 80s music sounds the same, I said that all raps sound the same. I know that raps are different from one another based on the TH-camr's reactions but... It all sounds the same.
I am old. I was in high school when this came out. Yes, the 80s had very distinct sounds that were used by many people, but they also had bands that sounded like no one else. Adam Ant, The Cure, The Pyschadelic Furs...the list goes on and on. A-ha still makes music and tours today. The lead singer can also still hit that note in the chorus. He says he wishes he'd had sung it a bit lower when recording it, but he can still hit it.
This is the first album I ever bought. I've always loved them. They have so many beautiful albums, but this is the song they will be remembered for. They are a Norwegian band. Their latest album, True North, is beautiful, as is the video. You should check it out. Also check out these songs: I'm Losing You Analogue Lifelines Summer Moved On- Morten Harket holds a note for 20 seconds Cry Wolf East of the Sun I could go on. Have fun with a-ha and Depeche- two bands I am never without.
Best Pop/Rock Band with the best vocalists in the music scene. Morten Harket the vocalist has a 5 octave vocal range. The Band is from Norway, and has 3 member's (Morten Harket vocal, Pal Waaktaar-Savoy - Guitar, Magne Furuholmen - Piano /Keyboard). Although they're known as a One hit band in the USA (even that is not true they had more than 1 hit in the us) they are big stars in the rest of the world. The band were listed 2x in the Guinness World Records book 1. For having the biggest-paying rock concert attendance. They drew an audience of 198,000 at Maracanã Stadium during the Rock in Rio festival 1991. 2. For holding the longest note in a pop song by Morten Harket in their Song ' Summer Moved On ' They sold near to 150 million albums and singles, released 11 Studio Albums (the last Album 'True Nord' was released end of 2022 accompanied by a movie of the same name which was shown in cinemas all over the world.) The music video for Take On Me was groundbreaking and won six awards and was nominated for two others at the 1986 MTV Music Awards. The band made a James Bond theme song "The Living Daylights" and also their Song "Velvet" was the Theme Song of the movie "One Night At McCool's" with Matt Damon. In 2017 a-ha performed for a MTV Unplugged concert and played and recorded acoustic versions of many of their popular songs including "Take On Me". This acoustic version was used in Deadpool 2 and in The Last Of Us. Take On Me has been covered countless times by other bands. The song "Feel This Moment", for example, performed by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera, samples the instrumental riff of Take On Me. Take On Me was used in many Hollywood movies like Ready Player One, Deadpool 2, Stranger Things .. A-ha influenced many other bands and singers especially - U2 (in their song A Beautiful Day the passage 'Touch Me' refers to the A-ha song The Sun Always Shines On Tv), - Coldplay (all Coldplay members are a-ha fans. One of the first albums that Coldplay singer Chris Martin bought was 'Hunting High And Low' by a-ha. The song "Living A Boys Adventure Tale" blew him away so much that he decided to become a singer himself. He said in some interviews , that Morten is the best and most beautiful singer in the world. Some members of Coldplay have even formed a separate band with the pianist from a-ha Magne. - Kean is also one of the bands that openly admit the a-ha influence. A-ha is one of the few bands that released albums where every song has the potential to be a hit, they have a distinctive style, they are very versatile and all band members can play multiple instruments. The band's guitarist, Pal, is a genius when it comes to song writing. I would really recommend you to get involved with the band. The band's 90s phase in particular is incredibly interesting because they showed that they were as much a rock band as they were a pop band
Definitely ground breaking. You had that cool world Kim Basinger. And Brad Pitt.I think we're in that and then I can't think of the other guy.Anyway, and then you had Roger rabbit. So this was groundbreaking and the song was cool as hell.I remember so good job thank you

I still dance to this my mom and godmother played this my whole life
Wow wow wow thank you so much
The video was revolutionary in the 80's and won awards.
Always love watching people sing this at karaoke & trying for those high notes....hilarious 😅
This video is my childhood, cant get anymore 80s then this
It’s because synthesiser sounds just came onto the scene and it was everywhere, it’s the sound of the 80s
You're exactly right, BP!! The late 70s and eighty was when bands really started exploring synthetic sounds!!
Lots of electric keyboards, synthetic drums, etc!!
This is such a classic song from my teen yrs!!! ❤
This song is one of my favorites and one of my favorite videos ever, the notes he hits and holds is amazing.
Welcome to the best music video of all time, in my humble opinion, ha ha ! The sound of the eighties was so uplifting. Great reaction !
80 is the beginning of the era of the synthesizer piano. There weren't very many different ways to make nice sounds. That's why the sounds of the rhythm sound similar.
STILL my favorite music video after all these years!
BEST MUSIC VIDEO EVER! Great song and the video was so ahead of its time with the stop action animation and mixing the animation with real life, amzing!
This song was so iconic I actually remember the first time it was played on the radio 😁
The 80s defined me. This is the soundtrack of my life.
The 70’s and 80’s were the best years for music. ❤️
I remember when this first came out on MTV, iconic, we were all mind blown with the video, it was so cool! These songs have seeped so deep into pop culture, movies, remixes etc...you prob have heard it before.
From Norway. One of the first videos on MTV
Timeless Video! This was "Our 80's!"
childhood! ❤ and for that time; The video 🤯
Yeah, It was absolutely mindblowing for its time! I used to draw, so I found it supercool! :D
And STILL the Greatest music video of ALL TIME!
Maybe all the music from the 80s sounds the same to you. You know what? All rap music sounds the same to me too, so we are even.
When he said all the 80s music sounds the same, I said that all raps sound the same. I know that raps are different from one another based on the TH-camr's reactions but... It all sounds the same.
@@karend1577I agree but all country tunes sound alike in my opinion
Yep and I can't even make it what's being said which I assume is the important part.
And rap and hip-hop isn't even music
stilll one of the best creative videos ever
Lot od the 80s music was the beginning of the electric sound, and as an 80s child, I do agree a lot of songs do sound simular
This is the first album I ever bought. I've always loved them. They have so many beautiful albums, but this is the song they will be remembered for. They are a Norwegian band. Their latest album, True North, is beautiful, as is the video. You should check it out. Also check out these songs:
I'm Losing You
Analogue
Lifelines
Summer Moved On- Morten Harket holds a note for 20 seconds
Cry Wolf
East of the Sun
I could go on. Have fun with a-ha and Depeche- two bands I am never without.
In 86 I was 14 and stationed at Bitburg AB. Always great to find others there at the same time.
Take on me has been used in sooooo many Hollywood movies, deadpool 2 features this version and the mtv unplugged version.
The band were listed 2x in the Guinness World Records book
1. For having the biggest-paying rock concert attendance. They drew an audience of 198,000 at Maracanã Stadium during the Rock in Rio festival 1991.
2. For holding the longest note in a pop song by Morten Harket in their Song ' Summer Moved On '
They sold near to 150 million albums and singles, released 11 Studio Albums (the last Album 'True Nord' was released end of 2022 accompanied by a movie of the same name which was shown in cinemas all over the world.)
The music video for Take On Me was groundbreaking and won six awards and was nominated for two others at the 1986 MTV Music Awards.
A-ha influenced many other bands and singers especially
- U2 (in their song A Beautiful Day the passage 'Touch Me' refers to the A-ha song The Sun Always Shines On Tv),
- Coldplay (all Coldplay members are a-ha fans.
So this was groundbreaking and the song was cool as hell.I remember so good job thank you
I was 14 when the eighties kicked off music started...... can I rewind back to then... no i cannot but I play this to my oldest niece yes and she loves it
We were coming out of the Disco Era.....cut us some slack....but the rock and roll hair bands were awesome.....but the weed still had seeds.............Peace!
My husband said we dressed so weird in the 80's because our parents were on acid when they had us. 😂
70’s and 80’s - fab eras to grow up in and I loved A-ha
Love this song.
I used to roller skate to this at the indoor place when I was a kid and I’m only 27 well 28 st Patrick’s day. So this shows it was a classic hit. For sureeee!
Dude 80’s music always makes my soul happy! I’m a hardcore metalhead at heart, but anytime I hear this type of music it takes me back to being a kid and watching VH1 and hearing the radio in the vehicle with my mom or dad. Great memories too
One of my first concerts!! New Orleans they opened for Cheap Trick
