John, I’d be taking a shovel full of the dirt where the ring was in contact with the earth home. Then put it through a gold pan to see if the missing stones are there.
Missed the notification, what a wonderful hunt- still don’t know how you can go home at night mate. Those relics are screaming my name!! Stay warm and safe, please tell Martin thanks for buttoning up and joining you- something refreshing about watching you two freeze together 😂❤❤❤❤
Hi John, sweet ring. It is late Victorian at the earliest. The setting you can see have little centre circles which is the type used for split pearls or perhaps turquoise. x
Glad there are still some spots you're able to dig. But I swear every time you say "coin contender here" the coins hear you and run away and hide!! LOL
I have to say, guessing you are much younger than I, your wealth of historical knowledge is Amazing and quite the pleasure. I always look forward to your digs as ours in the US are far younger. God Bless and Thank you. From a near Kerr descendant. Matthew (Kerrs of Fernieherst)
Thanks for the kind words Matthew! Soon to be 47 unfortunately, but I’m a tour guide by day so I have to know my history. Mind you I’ve always been fascinated by history and really enjoy learning all I can just to forget it just as quick! Thanks for the kind words and see you in the next dig!
Thanks Jay. I’ll put the ring into the museum and see what they say. I only just realised that the three stone recesses aren’t evenly spaced which might be a sign that it’s older too!
I know I'm supposed to speak on the metal hunt and all along finding more about William Wallace thank you so much I think a snow gives soil the most moisture overall as in rain lots will evaporate or run off into creeks but snow sits there slowly melts and runs down and has more nutrients in the ice crystals?
The ring and the little pendant are very nice finds. Nice to see Marty out with you again, and great hammered silver for him. 4 to 5 inches of snow in the Texas forecast for my area coming Thursday, so maybe it will be a white post-Christmas. Cheers from Texas.
Thanks David. Nice to have Martyn out for a wee change and a hammered coin first day of 2025 for him! The jammy swine!! Stay warm! Turning a lot colder 🥶 here in the next few days. -20oC for some in Scotland! 🏴
Scottish Dragon pendant - in Celtic mythology dragons are seen as powerful guardians of wisdom and treasure - hopefully it will lead you to great treasures!
There was an operetta entitled ' White Horse inn ' i wonder if there is a connection. Famous for the aria 'wish you all the luck goodbye' sung by Josef Locke.
I'm sure I'm not the only commenter with this comment but I sure would save that ring dig-spot on GPS so you could give it a good sifting later on a warmer day - maybe a spot a good 2x2 meters out from the dog spot and down a bit. Sure would be amazing to find those stones, as impossible as that may seem.
Thanks Chris. It’s a great idea but unfortunately like looking for a needle in a hay stack as the ring could be hundreds of years old as and the fields are ploughed several times per year, so alas chances are slim
It's always good to see Martyn out with you, and he was a true jammy swine with that hammered silver coin, well done Martyn! I love the ring you found, was there any print on the inside (I thought I saw some letters, but maybe I'm just daft). Well done for both of you!
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed.m and great to have Martyn out for a wee change! I’ve had a look but can’t see any marks, though that adds to the possibility of it being older? Maybe! Thanks for watching!!
Great too see you well and both out for the first of 2025! Great dig for you both too and lots of coppers and wow a silver hammered for Martin - what a way to see the new year in 🎉🎉
Maybe some day you could put your best palm guards together on a table and look closely at them the way you did with today's find . They're visually interesting when you can see the evidence of having been used.
Any site of significance is designated a Scheduled Monument with stringent rules about detecting, fieldwalking, and even access in some cases. Official consent is required to make any changes at all, including picking things up like broken pottery shards. It is still possible to detect outside of scheduled areas. Surrounding fields are often not scheduled because the land is needed for farming or development and the potential for anything of national importance is lower. Finds outside of scheduled monuments often can't tell us much about land use in the past. Significant finds may still turn up in areas outside scheduled monuments, though. These tell us quite a bit about life in the past but little about an actual site. If they do tell us a lot, the area gets scheduled if it is significant enough, though it's impractical to schedule everything. Although sites are collectively called monuments, they range in nature from things like crop marks of Neolithic causewayed enclosures to standing stones or the buildings of Skara Brae.
I think that rings very old. Looks pretty crudely made and maybe it’s just me but the stone mounts don’t appear even. I’m going medieval with my guess!
Hi John. Not sure if your ring find is that old. l bought my wife's antique engagement ring in gold, in the 60's. The 3 stone setting like that was known as a ''Gypsy Setting''. Cheers, John.
Happy hunting! The blue bit is just a plastic piece with my name on it that I stuck in the wrong place 😜 it should have gone at the arm cup apparently 🤣
This relates to a previous video. How about you do an Q & A? Viewers can submit questions and you choose which you want to answer. I would like to know how many trips detecting did you do before you found your first coin?
Better wear that pendent keep you safe from finding can slaw or bottle tops. Funny you say it's only a couple hundred years. That would be older than the state in the USA I live in but you are on Roman or older areas. Ya I'm jealous.
I imagine the size of the palm guard would represent the size of the person using it, child labour isn't a modern problem it's been around as long as the wheel
Could that coin you are asking about be Roman? It’s a head looking to the left and the hair is the right. It’s an odd shape so thinking it could be a Roman coin.
I believe her got a tattoo of a Jerusalem Cross when he was in Jerusalem as a Prince in the late 1800’s and his two sons got dragon 🐉 tattoos in Japan when they were in the sea cadets, but that’s all i know for sure
Question!!!..... would frozen ground be more beneficial for detecting over wet or dry?? Surely there's some science on the subject...having never swung a detector in my life, i was just curious........as to why you feel the need to freeze your nuts off, in exposed field, in the middle of winter...lol
Noooooo! Great intro...William Wallace..blah,blah....proper history, the likes of, that's super important to the Scottish nation......ooh ive found a ring!.....looks a bit delicate!..... i'm a Professional Archelogist, I'll just give it a scrub with my toothbrush....Nooooooo! Your location alone, gave you the right, to maybe squirt some water at it.....dude Scottish History .......that could have been W. Wallace's pinky ring(wasn't i know)......just saying ok! Try thinking this way.....your filming and detecting and make the find of a lifetime but your toothbrush choice, damages beyond repair, a true relic.....we would never have seen this episode, we'd be seeing on the news, Scottish Detectorist, destroys National Treasure Please...i like these blogs and I'm a huge fan....just wanna make sure, I'll still be watching them this time next year and not watching repeats on Dave with Mock the Week....
John I have to mention that I showed my wife the northern light display from your back yard. Now she wants to emigrate too!
That was a Amazing Site !
John, so cold here, I'm indoors watching this and still wearing my heated gilet! Best wishes from the Welsh Marches.
I really enjoy the more unusual finds and it’s nice to see Martin again!
Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks ☺️
Just to cool 😊
Marty starting the year off right 🎉 Great time for the both of you!
You got that right! Thanks Jennifer! Much appreciated
John, I’d be taking a shovel full of the dirt where the ring was in contact with the earth home. Then put it through a gold pan to see if the missing stones are there.
Not a bad idea, but it makes me wonder how far an object moves from having the soil turned over the years. Who knows though!
Missed the notification, what a wonderful hunt- still don’t know how you can go home at night mate. Those relics are screaming my name!! Stay warm and safe, please tell Martin thanks for buttoning up and joining you- something refreshing about watching you two freeze together 😂❤❤❤❤

Thanks
Always appreciate your history
I appreciate that thanks for watching
Yup I've learnt so much over past couple of year 😊
I am thrilled you were able to get out with the weather you have been “enjoying”. Follow up on the ring will be much anticipated.
Sounds like the heated vest is a keeper…nice dig, John. Cheers, and ATB!
Thanks Erin. Yes, it’s been a great addition to my equipment for sure! Best wishes and happy 2025
Great work John & Martin ❤🏴🏴
Many thanks pixie 🧚♀️
An entertaining 36 minutes thanks guys it was good 👍
Glad there are still some spots you're able to dig. But I swear every time you say "coin contender here" the coins hear you and run away and hide!! LOL
You’re telling me 🤣
Well done John, good days digging. Martin is on fire. 👍
This will be a grand year for you!
I hope so Maureen! I’m certainly off to a good start! Although Martyn is off to an even better start than me!

Nice finds boys. We are only digging snow in Canada❤
Stay warm Lori! I’m sure it’ll be here soon enough!
Very nice finds for you and Marty! Would be nice to see that old ring restored
Thanks Jay. I’ll put the ring into the museum and see what they say. I only just realised that the three stone recesses aren’t evenly spaced which might be a sign that it’s older too!
Great show john thanks
Many thanks Thomas
Very nice finds! A good start for the new year, one must get the aluminum to start the year! 😂
cold/snow has taken over in pennsylvania and made it undiggable
Nice one John
Thanks Karl! Enjoy the video
Nice job thanks to you and Martin for sharing.
Love the video John, great haul the ring I'd say 15th century its beautiful John congrats my friend
Thanks 👍 much appreciated Chris. We’ll see what the museum thinks and I’ll let you know!

I’ll have to bow to your knowledge on this one Jeffrey!! But sounds logical to me
yay john
Hey Alan 🙋🏻♂️ enjoy the video
Back in the groove! Gonna be a great year for you and your mates
Hope so! Thanks Jerry and hope you have a happy and healthy 2025
Great finds! ✌️🤍
A good day John 😊 thank you.

First place 🥇 again! Enjoy the video
Great day, John. If any of your findables are sell-able I'd offer for the dragon in a heartbeat!!!
Thanks Judith! Nothing for sale at the moment, but maybe one day! To find my retirement
Nice digging. Good to see Martin out.
Scottish Dragon pendant - in Celtic mythology dragons are seen as powerful guardians of wisdom and treasure - hopefully it will lead you to great treasures!
Oh nice find on this field
Thanks Sheila. Glad you enjoyed
Some lovely finds john excellent job .I'm up in Brechin on Sunday with my new ace apex so I'm hoping for some nice finds. Cheers son
The dragon swallowed them up in one bite, only leaving behind the charm on the necklace. Cheers from New Orleans
The ring MIGHT be something made by hand & isn't "broken" but made from a simple strip of copper. The "break" might just be where the 2 ends meet.
Many thanks! God suggestion. We’ll see what the museum thinks
Hope Mrs John is on her Feet!
Otherwise the Bell is ringing for you!
Martin won that round again!😂😂
Winther is in Scotland, so take it easy
😜🔝❤️
Good hunt John. Warmer days soon to come.
Very nice my friend.Rk.
Great dig guys, you both had star finds. Thanks John.
There was an operetta entitled ' White Horse inn ' i wonder if there is a connection. Famous for the aria 'wish you all the luck goodbye' sung by Josef Locke.
Great vids. Still hoping to see the hoard coil out in the field
Coming soon Gordon!

Many thanks. We’ll see what the museum thinks and I’ll let you all know
Sounds good i realy like all the things you find and explain the best you can it helps everyone
Great Video, Thanks, Indiana.
Maybe some day you could put your best palm guards together on a table and look closely at them the way you did with today's find . They're visually interesting when you can see the evidence of having been used.
Thanks Lucy. A lot of the ones I’ve found in the past are in the museum but I should definitely compare the ones I do have! Thanks
Interesting finds John all the best for 2025!...
The blanking cap thing I think is for hydraulics rear of tractor.. great video 👍
When you said a quiff,i immediately thought Morrisey
Is that lead cap from tooth paste tube?
Happy New year John and crew, good hunting in 2025❤
Many thanks ☺️
👍👍
Thanks Jillian
Just subscd🎉fantastic🎉
Wow...we in America would be fined for detecting historical areas. Must br nice. Good detecting
Everywhere in Britain is a historical site.

6:25 You should maybe sift through the hole for the stones!
That's what I was thinking
I’m kind of curious if you have to turn in every find over there to have it looked at?
And brother you need to start d 3:18 ropping more coins, I'm not getting the good buzz lately 😂😂😂
It’ll come! Give it time
I think that rings very old. Looks pretty crudely made and maybe it’s just me but the stone mounts don’t appear even. I’m going medieval with my guess!

You did say February John so I wondered what year .
Hello from Bonney Lake. I have the Deus 2 as well. What is the blue part on the shaft?
Happy hunting! The blue bit is just a plastic piece with my name on it that I stuck in the wrong place 😜 it should have gone at the arm cup apparently 🤣
Did the fort become 'OOR WULLIES FORT' ?
Not that I know of 🤣
Wisnae a pail ...😊
Greatings from Romania!!! What is your filming equipment?
Greetings 🇷🇴 I used a GoPro this day with a DJI mic as rain and snow was forecast

I wonder if the bearer was hit by illness after losing their ill fortune charm.
Hi maybe not a ring - too small - but a hoop hearing as men or pirate from XVII or XVIII century .....
I imagine the size of the palm guard would represent the size of the person using it, child labour isn't a modern problem it's been around as long as the wheel
A least it wasn't martin wee ring 😅
JUST MY OPINION THAT RING COULD DEFINITELY BE MIDIEVAL.
Could that coin you are asking about be Roman? It’s a head looking to the left and the hair is the right. It’s an odd shape so thinking it could be a Roman coin.
COSIIII or Handrain AE Sestertius?
Didn’t think of that! Thanks for the info. I’ll have another look!
@@thescottishdetectorist You’re welcome! Did you get my email with the pictures of the special button I found?
My wife thinks the ring comes from a Christmas cracker LOL
Good on 2025 Jon, get those hammered
Many thanks James! Enjoy the video
What program is Martin on ?
How much beer?
Medieval has four syllables John
Not in Scotland
@ apparently, but I live in Scotland and it’s always been four. As you were.
@ worm has two syllables in Scotland
Have you been working on your Futbol Announcer voice John?
your half penny is decimal and not pre decimal, that type came out with all the other decimal coinage
The White Horse should sponsor you for all of the free advertising you give them in the 'quality trash' department. :)
I had read once that “dirty berty “ went to China and had himself tattooed! Is that true?
