  • Hey, it's Steve Zalunardo with Remax and Treviso Realty. In this video, I discuss the recent proposal by the Canadian government to address the growing immigration crisis. They are considering implementing a 25,000 dollar departure penalty and doubling the existing departure tax for citizens leaving the country. This strategy aims to discourage Canadians from moving overseas due to issues such as housing inflation, affordability, education, productivity, and bad politics. Watch the video to learn more about the potential impact of these measures and how they may affect individuals and families considering leaving Canada.

We have been wintering in Florida for the last 14 years. We both grew up in and have strong ties to Canada. If the current government gets back in ,we will leave for sure. Hopefully the common sense conservatives will win a majority. The LNDP coalition has done a lot of damage and it will take decades to fix their mess.

We've been doing the same for the last 7 years. We wanted to move to the States permanently. But it turned out it's not so simple for Canadian retirees. The US doesn't offer special visas for us. So, the Americans don't want us, and Canada doesn't want us to leave. It looks like we'll be buried under maple trees.

@@robertk5441I’m sorry to hear about this, and I wish that you and your family didn’t have to deal with these issues. Have you consulted other immigration attorneys, or have you only been with one firm? I highly recommend you look into getting a different lawyer from a top law firm as they may be able to help you out more. I can’t say for sure that they will be able to help you, but it’s worth a try. I wish you and your family the best luck! Cheers

This whole thing is not confirmed at all. It's just a paragraph that was tweeted. Anyone could have written it. It could be a complete hoax.
3:57 You don't pay departure tax on cash. The tax is on unrealized gains on assets that you haven't sold. You're taxed as if you had sold them and then reacquired them immediately. If you sell all your assets for cash, then you avoid the departure tax, but you'll have to pay capital gains tax anyway, but at least you'll have the cash to pay the tax with. The issue is of course that if you don't sell your assets before you leave, you might not have the cash to pay the tax.

Then there is distribution charges for electricity, garbage etc which also ends up in government's pocket. We pay more for Canadian electricity than New York & Virginia We pay more for Canadian Cars than the great nation of USA. And average Canadian pays between 55% to 70% of take home salary on housing. Then Canada has the highest charges for phone plans, internet, airline tickets, hotels. Then there is oh food. Tomatoes, eggs, meat & milk almost cost 50-70% more in Canada.

Charging a fee to prevent the departure of skilled immigrants could be seen as a violation of human rights and international law, especially regarding freedom of movement and the right to emigrate.
    1. Freedom of Movement (Article 13 of the UDHR):
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN, guarantees in Article 13 the right of every person to leave any country, including their own, and to return to their own country. Imposing a departure fee can be interpreted as an unjustified restriction on the right to free movement, especially if it is used to discourage emigration, which could be considered a violation of this principle.
    2. Protection of Skilled Workers (ILO Conventions):
Although the right to freedom of movement is widely recognized, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has standards that address the mobility of workers, focusing more on the protection of workers’ rights when they move to other countries, ensuring they are treated fairly and without discrimination.
Imposing a fee aimed specifically at restricting the departure of skilled immigrants could therefore violate principles of freedom and non-discrimination, especially if it is shown that the fee is a form of repression of the free choice of migration, particularly if such taxation is disproportionate or discriminatory.
    3. Rights of Skilled Workers and “Brain Drain”:
While countries may have policies for retaining talent and preventing brain drain, excessive restrictions on the freedom of movement of skilled individuals could be considered a violation of human rights. The right of a person to seek better opportunities in other countries should not be conditioned or obstructed by excessive measures.
    4. Possible Exceptions:
In some cases, a country may argue that fiscal measures or restrictions are necessary to protect its economic development or workforce, but these measures must be carefully balanced to avoid violating fundamental rights. For example, some jurisdictions may try to regulate or retain professionals in essential areas, but this must be done in a transparent, proportional manner that respects individuals’ rights.
Therefore, if a fee is imposed solely to discourage the departure of skilled immigrants, it could be considered an excessive restriction and contrary to international human rights standards, such as those established by the UN, violating the right to freedom of movement and the dignity of the individual.

I dont even own paintings or next to no jewlery and I read on certain things you have to pay for things you have sold? I dont get how it works. then want to Ding you more as you leave? I dont even have $25000 to my name..... let alone an additional ontop of whatever else..... what a STRANGE world. To think we live where they won't let you leave? how ABUSIVE essentially. If this was a relationship .. why ? aren't they happy about all the ILLEGALS here? thats what they wanted? so what do they expect?
