LAST CHANCE TO LEAVE: Canada's Stay or Pay TAX

- Hey, it's Steve Zalunardo with Remax and Treviso Realty. In this video, I discuss the recent proposal by the Canadian government to address the growing immigration crisis. They are considering implementing a 25,000 dollar departure penalty and doubling the existing departure tax for citizens leaving the country. This strategy aims to discourage Canadians from moving overseas due to issues such as housing inflation, affordability, education, productivity, and bad politics. Watch the video to learn more about the potential impact of these measures and how they may affect individuals and families considering leaving Canada.

We have been wintering in Florida for the last 14 years. We both grew up in and have strong ties to Canada. If the current government gets back in ,we will leave for sure. Hopefully the common sense conservatives will win a majority. The LNDP coalition has done a lot of damage and it will take decades to fix their mess.
We've been doing the same for the last 7 years. We wanted to move to the States permanently. But it turned out it's not so simple for Canadian retirees. The US doesn't offer special visas for us. So, the Americans don't want us, and Canada doesn't want us to leave. It looks like we'll be buried under maple trees.
@@robertk5441I’m sorry to hear about this, and I wish that you and your family didn’t have to deal with these issues. Have you consulted other immigration attorneys, or have you only been with one firm? I highly recommend you look into getting a different lawyer from a top law firm as they may be able to help you out more. I can’t say for sure that they will be able to help you, but it’s worth a try. I wish you and your family the best luck! Cheers
How do we fix the crime? The Trojan Horse is in our midst.
it's got nothing to do with the fucking political party. That's a sham. It's to do with the international cabal. They are the ones who are putting pressure on the governments of almost every country on earth. Stop voting and just leave.

LOLOLOL
how dumb are these people
seriously.
We immigrated from France in 2012 and until the cov we were very happy in AB even if it had already changed since our arrival everything was fine, then we lost everything!!! Now we'd like to move to FL or TX, but my husband is an electrician and we don't see any job offers or they sponsor us for a visa and we don't have a cent to come as investors! In conclusion, we left family and friends to give our children a better future, and in the end we led them straight to a communist country !!

I don't understand how people voted for him, now it will take what 30-40 years for Canada to get back on its feet and that's if PP is really who he says he is and reduces immigration to a strict minimum for years to come.
I can't put into print what I feel about Canada under the current dictatorship. It is hell.
Sadly you are not embellishing the truth. It IS hell
I left in 2022 and they stole my cpp and oas. They owe me 80,000 and refuse to pay a 70 year old. Morally bankrupt. The Wef are committed to canada destruction
Well I’m moving to another country and the government is charging me a 25 percent withholding taxes on my pensions I can’t afford to stay in when I retire and now the government is taxing me even though I will not be using any of Canada services yet increasing my taxes sounds more like a dictatorship not a free democracy !
This is standard practice for a Western "democracy". They always tax pension funds at the point you withdraw them, whether you are exiting the country or simply residing within the country and withdrawing so you can pay for your life.
The amount depends on where you are going. I'm looking to go to Spain which has a tax treaty with Canada. The withholding tax will be 15% and I believe, since you are paying taxes in Canada, you can file a tax return and you may get a refund.depending on your income. Although you should speak to an accountant.
Authoritarian rule now.
As far as I am concerned, $25,000 to leave Canada?? Worth every penny.
The annoying part is that people like me dont have 25k to leave in the first place.
If they enact that, i'll never be able to leave.
@@deadturret4049 You will find a way to leave. Because if they enact that tax or other measures designed to discourage people from leaving, it will make it even clearer to you that Canada has become a peculiar sort of autocratic hellhole. It will make you even more determined to leave.

There is no tax currently when you leave Canada. Unless you own real estate you need to do what is called a deemed disposition

I did none of that. I kept my house and a bank acct in Can. Been gone since 2019
@@scott3114 I didn’t think there was a way that the CRA could tax you again on money in a bank account that you have already paid tax on .
@@flyinphil42 They can't, the acct is for pension and other deposits, ie, from my investments. I won't open an acct in Mx. for multiple reasons (nothing shady)
I use a debt card to withdraw cash once a month or so
@@flyinphil42 They do tax you again. Typically though, in practice, they do that if you have money. Talking over 6 million in net worth or more. What the scott guy said above is true, but it's only because he's not wealthy. Technically, under the income tax act the CRA can tax him at this very moment because he meets the first tier requirements and second tier requirements to be considered a canadian tax resident. The only reason they don't do this is because he doesn't have enough money.
Don't leave full time . Always keep a small place here with a mailing address so you go on a long vacation come back and then go on another vacation
Yes - but then you still pay taxes in Canada
That's my plan in two years , I know what you are saying . Basically, keep your primary residence but " holiday " for most of the year ( and keep income low ?)
Keeping your income low might mean dying with $$$ in rrsp or capital gains - so you’d just be delaying tax

BC has that loophole covered. Once a year your have to declare you resided in your home for a certain amount of time each year. Less than the stipulated time and and you are penalized. They expect you to rent the home while you're not there.
I sold my house in Ontario and I am moving my family to Paraguay. We are tired of woke people and taxes and Ontario's crappy weather. Canada has failed so we are going somewhere that has a future for us.
This whole thing is not confirmed at all. It's just a paragraph that was tweeted. Anyone could have written it. It could be a complete hoax.
3:57 You don't pay departure tax on cash. The tax is on unrealized gains on assets that you haven't sold. You're taxed as if you had sold them and then reacquired them immediately. If you sell all your assets for cash, then you avoid the departure tax, but you'll have to pay capital gains tax anyway, but at least you'll have the cash to pay the tax with. The issue is of course that if you don't sell your assets before you leave, you might not have the cash to pay the tax.
wow. not a good look for the country
Can you provide a link to the article you referenced
Even as someone who dislikes JT, I am almost 100% certain there has been no credible source confirming this. Only rumors and speculation

In case you r Rip Van Winkle lets wake u up. In case u r a liberal leftist looter you should know between the income taxes, surcharges, social insurance, EI, trillium, GST, gas tax, road tax, house tax, carbon tax and many others 60% of individual's income goes to communist state. Then there is distribution charges for electricity, garbage etc which also ends up in government's pocket. We pay more for Canadian electricity than New York & Virginia We pay more for Canadian Cars than the great nation of USA. And average Canadian pays between 55% to 70% of take home salary on housing. Then Canada has the highest charges for phone plans, internet, airline tickets, hotels. Then there is oh food. Tomatoes, eggs, meat & milk almost cost 50-70% more in Canada.
Hard to trust someone wearing two watches.
I think it is not right we have paid tax on that money already when we earn it

Thank you for this update!!
if i was incharge i would do the reverse giving bonus to leave as there is a housing services and all crisis and al cant get these
Im confused - Do you have to give up your Canadian citizenship and pay 25k TO finish paying taxes in Canada ?
Where are we allowed dual citizsneship and not owe taxes to Canada when we dont even live in Canada ?
Would it be better to , for example , own a house - rent out rooms ( in canada ) and live off the $3000/month for example and live somewhere in Costa Rica and " visit " every six months to restart thr visitors visa , but keep your taxes low in Canada since the rental income would be your only income ( but enougb to live off in a handful of places ,lime Thailand for example...)?
And Canada is different from North Korea how at this point??

Trudeau's over the top lifestyle requires constant revenue injections. Carbon tax might be one. There are many others.

It's getting a visa, so difficult. Would live to .ive to US.
Isn't this kinda North Koreaish?
Why is it the problem for people to leave, they are replacing them with immigrants, or the problem is the new immigrants don’t want to work so they cannot be taxed?
Skilled Canadians are leaving...being replaced by those whose only contributions are building mud huts, herding goats and cooking meat on an open fire.
Because the people leaving are long time Canadians that have built up their wealth. The people coming into the country come with nothing.
I’m not surprised something freeland would be brewing
Freeland is still taking her online course of Economics 101. She'll no doubt get back to us.
Charging a fee to prevent the departure of skilled immigrants could be seen as a violation of human rights and international law, especially regarding freedom of movement and the right to emigrate.
1. Freedom of Movement (Article 13 of the UDHR):
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN, guarantees in Article 13 the right of every person to leave any country, including their own, and to return to their own country. Imposing a departure fee can be interpreted as an unjustified restriction on the right to free movement, especially if it is used to discourage emigration, which could be considered a violation of this principle.
2. Protection of Skilled Workers (ILO Conventions):
Although the right to freedom of movement is widely recognized, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has standards that address the mobility of workers, focusing more on the protection of workers’ rights when they move to other countries, ensuring they are treated fairly and without discrimination.
Imposing a fee aimed specifically at restricting the departure of skilled immigrants could therefore violate principles of freedom and non-discrimination, especially if it is shown that the fee is a form of repression of the free choice of migration, particularly if such taxation is disproportionate or discriminatory.
3. Rights of Skilled Workers and “Brain Drain”:
While countries may have policies for retaining talent and preventing brain drain, excessive restrictions on the freedom of movement of skilled individuals could be considered a violation of human rights. The right of a person to seek better opportunities in other countries should not be conditioned or obstructed by excessive measures.
4. Possible Exceptions:
In some cases, a country may argue that fiscal measures or restrictions are necessary to protect its economic development or workforce, but these measures must be carefully balanced to avoid violating fundamental rights. For example, some jurisdictions may try to regulate or retain professionals in essential areas, but this must be done in a transparent, proportional manner that respects individuals’ rights.
Therefore, if a fee is imposed solely to discourage the departure of skilled immigrants, it could be considered an excessive restriction and contrary to international human rights standards, such as those established by the UN, violating the right to freedom of movement and the dignity of the individual.
The US taxes you forever if you work abroad so a one time payment seems better than an ongoing tax bill. Or you have to give up your US citizenship. Don’t have to do that in Canada. Yeah it sucks but it’s not unusual compared to the US.
Exactly, Canada is not the worst country for exit taxes/fees I think we are still lower than many others and the USA based system of forever tax unless you give up citizenship would be an even worse situation IMO. Yes you pay to leave which sucks and I dont agree with it, but again it seems a pretty common tax among 1st world countries seeing people leave and its not a new thing.
