I wish more and more people appreciate these arts which are ages old, there are many families generations after generations dedicated to preserving such arts traditions, they need Raja poshana.
This is a very interesting type of Indian performance that could last an entire night but have been adjusted to fit contemporary lifestyles and new audiences.
very nice... in kathakali through expressions we can make out the meaning even we don't know the language .. nice same kind of art form we find in Karnataka called YAKSHAGANA, it as some same features but its render through dialog's and also dance form... but both as quite similarities.. in dressing and makeup... JAI HIND Proud to be a Indian...
interesting performance! scary makeup and eyes movement!! those muscles on the face... it's amazing how long they train!! would you do that? we enjoyed a performance in Kumily too!
They train for years. The make up takes hours to complete. Make up is called chamayam or chutti kutthu. Its one of the best art in the world from gods own country kerala.

Wonderful. Was born in Kerala but left soon after. Kerala was the land of Cheras and no wonder that Tamils can understand most of it. Malayalam is derived from Sanskrit with its full repertoire of 56 ? consonants and 13? vowels, I believe. (pl correct me). Tamil is as old as Sanskrit if not older but it has very few alphabets and cannot be used to describe all the clear sounds that Sanskrit can produce. Can some one elaborate on all the facial expressions and hand mudras used in Kathakali please? A brief note on the different colored beards and the dresses will also be enlightening. I understand that only males play all the roles, including female roles. Are there ladies who have made their way into this art form? Many thanks to all the artists and for the kind souls that have shared this feast with us all.
Nice video, and liked the subtitles and annotations. Your logo in the middle is a bit annoying -- is it necessary for such a short clip? Liked the separate annotations of the gestures and the vocals. Also, please list the musicians and performers. I recognize K. Madhu as the main singer.
Just know the background story before they perform. They're quite slow and repeat one thing many times. So you wont have a problem in understanding their acting/dancing. Just ask someone to tell you what it is and youll understand it through their performance otherwise you'll just get bored.
tonetatone Cultures are so cool. It’s interesting how even the make up that they wear in both this dance and Kabuki is used to portray the different characters. The similarities and differences in both cultures style is great!
What an art....hope it lives forever...so many different types of classical dance forms from India...wow!
I wish more and more people appreciate these arts which are ages old, there are many families generations after generations dedicated to preserving such arts traditions, they need Raja poshana.
Thank you
The singers, along with the dancers, are also incredible! What beautiful voices they possess! God bless
Thank you so much

Nice. The subtitles are helpful. I believe the singers are Kottakkal Madhu (with the beard) and Nedumbully Ram Mohan.
Thank you, you are correct
He is not Ram Mohan. He is Vengeri Narayanan.

സന്തോഷം. അഭിപ്രായം തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞതിലും
I understand the need, but the indiavideo.org stamp across the screen is an affront to the art form.

How to understand and enjoy this art form ? Do we need to study sanskrit ?
This type of song is called soopaanam. The language is not pure Sanskrit. It's classic Malayalam.(in this use both Malayalm and Sanskrit words)
Just know the background story before they perform. They're quite slow and repeat one thing many times. So you wont have a problem in understanding their acting/dancing. Just ask someone to tell you what it is and youll understand it through their performance otherwise you'll just get bored.
what a beautiful aalap
What's that instrument at the very beginning called!!!?
Thamburu, a string instrument used in Carnatic Music

Is that a man performing as a woman? No disrespect, just wondering if it is like Japanese Kabuki where men play both male and female roles.
mean he I believe so. Traditionally only men performed, but in some cases nowadays women perform kathakali as well.
tonetatone Cultures are so cool. It’s interesting how even the make up that they wear in both this dance and Kabuki is used to portray the different characters. The similarities and differences in both cultures style is great!
