    Void us an _awesome_ distro!
    It's a bit trickier distro to run then Arch,
    simply because it's not as popular, it's
    far more difficult to find support for online.
    That said, it's an amazing option intermediate users!
    If your comfortable with Arch, but want to try something different,
    and Gentoo is not your cup of tea, Void is where you need to be!

      @@TexasBaker pretty good actually. Packages seem a little more stable and dependencies tested. It is a rolling release, but it feels more akin to Slackware-Current in how they build the packages. You in don't just get one update, you kinda get a string of stuff rebuilt against other stuff, even if it's the same version. It's still minimalistic though, but one good thing, runit is very light on resources as an init. PID1 is forked as needed rather than everything crammed into it. Feels very clean compared to systemd. The first distro I fell in love with was arch and I tried void and had to switch my main machine over. It’s not as convenient as arch as it doesn’t have the AUR but it’s nice to have a distro that hasn’t been spun a million times. All the software I personally use was already in their repositories.

    • @pdote
      @pdote 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I never used arch, but often times when I hear in a video "it's in the AUR", I look in the standard void repo and it's there too. Which always leaves me wondering why everyone loves the AUR so much...

    • @STNKbone
      @STNKbone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pdote As I understand it, the main Arch repos are actually pretty small compared to other major distros, so the AUR actually has to pick up the slack quite a bit to supply packages that are already avaible in say the Debian repos. That being said their are a lot of more obscure programs in the AUR that Void doesn't have.

    • @encrypt3d587
      @encrypt3d587 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's one of my biggest issues with systemd. You can go back and forth, arguing about philosophical issues with it, but the issue here is that it's just become normal to assume that linux = systemd and that every single system runs it, allowing devs to depend on it for the most random bullshit. It's the lack of freedom that pisses me off the most.

    • @camthesaxman3387
      @camthesaxman3387 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@encrypt3d587 I actually think that's a good thing as it provides a standard interface for applications where there previously was none, and helps with the serious fragmentation problem that Linux has. As long as tools like elogind and eudev exist to provide those interfaces without systemd, you can still enjoy whatever init system you prefer.

      In fact, it's more up-to-date with pip. I had an issue with Qtile on Fedora a while back because I was using it from the system package and it seemed mismatched with the docs because the dnf package was a few versions behind.

    My biggest issue with void is that the installer doesn’t have any options for encryption. I haven’t tried setting up the encrypted volume beforehand, but if I’m gonna have to do all that work anyways might as well just go arch. Void is beautiful for its resource usage and ease of install, but I wish it’s install program had encryption.

    I usually just choose a distro for how good the name is, and in that aspect Void is at the top of the list.
    The only issue is that I'm still kind of new to this, and there's a lot more documentation for Systemd.

    Hummmm, have I been pronouncing sudo wrong all these years. I've always pronounced it like sue-dough. Back when I started with Linux in the mid-90s, there were no TH-cam videos to learn the pronunciation of some of these things from.
    sudo is asking for the user's password, not root's password. sudo can give a user some root privileges, without giving them all root privileges. If a user had to know root's password to use sudo, they could su to root and gain all privileges, including privileges sudo might have been limiting.
    I have a vague memory of looking at Void Linux at some point, but can't remember if I actually tried it. I like exploring independent Linux distros. I might have looked at it's page on DistroWatch, saw xbps was its package manager, assumed it was a GUI only package manager, and looked no further. Logic would dictate that packages with names like xbps and xtools on a Linux system would somehow be related to Xorg or X11. I might need to give Void a closer look.

    Lol people are amazed by the speed of xbps. It's indeed fast, but that's because it's overly simple, and because of that in particular cases it becomes painfully slow. It doesn't have hooks as, e.g., pacman does. That means that when, e.g., you are installing or upgrading a bunch of font packages, fc-cache is executed during the configuration of each package (instead of running it once after the whole installation). Such cases are PITA.

    • @celestialbeing4767
      @celestialbeing4767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soupwizard the same argument can be used for other programs. Systemd isn't just a init system as many would believe. I think the main reason its hated so much is because its so dominant. Doesn't let other init systems shine. Runit, s6, openrc are true init systems. However they don't have the features that systemd has. What is that you ask? Pre-made scripts running in the background regulating other programs. The other systems require you create scripts to manage those background programs. System d stands alone in this.
