I think they got the 1/4 mile trap speeds wrong. Stock ms3 traps around 99-101mph and the GTI traps in the mid 90's. A 109mph trap speed is BMW 335i territory, and stock speeds aren't quite that quick. I know this because I own one (and love it).
All the hot hatches these days are great, really can't go wrong GTI, Mk3, ST the great thing is all of these can hold 4 people and have a shit ton of storage options. I picked the ST why? Mine was fully loaded at 26K, the GTIs reliability/expensive maintenance was a point I took into consideration. The GTI also has stability control that can't be turned off I also don't like the plaid interior. The Mk3 well the smile of the front grill, and the project feel which would lead me to endlessly want to upgrade the less than desirable driving triats. The ST was very solid, and also didn't feel like go go go all the time. Also the handling around the corners was awesome, the feeling of dive was not their. I like front wheel drive BUT when you loose traction you tend to dive, and this happens with little to no warning, the ST will not dive the backend will slide out before this happens. The ST was the happy medium between the GTI and the MK3, and this was why I felt the ST was best for me.
A quick note. Anybody buying a GTI for performance is gonna put a downpipe/testpipe on it and get a software reflash giving it considerably more power for less than $1500. I'm sure the same stuff is available for the Mazda. Probably not as many tunes but most go with Cobb as far as I know. The software on my turbocharged car made it a completely different machine for $800.
Imma flat out say both cars were hopped up for that test. I've never seen a stock speed 3 trap 100mph let alone 109mph. and 101mph for the gti? that's what chipped gti and jettas run.
I love the way the speed 3 looks, its cheeky and naughty. Btw im already spending exactly usd60,000 to buy this car cos of the 120% import duty in my country, most people here dont mind it cos we get super cheap fuel, also theres almost no enforcement on the speed limit so normally i drive to work at about 120mph on a good day (i work at the airport)
it not that it horrible i do believer some people are being bias against the GTI but the Mazda has a better interior, a slightly bigger engine and a lot more power/speed. and we are talking stock from what the dealer gives you not what you can do to it. And so what if you need to correct it the speed3 keeps you on your toes which is really nice for a sports car. About fuel economy its a sports car don't buy it for gas it performance, power and speed. Sorry Mazda wins has down.

D: My uncle owns a VW, not really sure what model it is- I think it's a GTI. He's had it for about a year and the thing has had so many damn problems..and the repair bills get really expensive.
@shr229850517 the R32 is the old model and the mazda is still faster that then R32. Although the R32 has all wheel drive. The newer model is the Golf R.
@harmankardonbose unfortunately, no. as much as I'd like to brag about it, it's just not true. a low 14, high 13 sec stock speed will trap 98-99 stock, not even close to 109. for that trap, it'd have to be a 12 sec car, most likely with drags AND serious engine work. hopefully this was just an honest error
I rather take Mazda, much more refined car than GTI, I should know, I drove one for a week. VW's laden with electrical/mechanical problems. Mazda is one of those cars that you have to first drive it to appreciate the genius that goes into each vehicle they make.

I like the GTI but it's not as available and tends to have dumb high retail and even markups on it. I therefore may have to get the mazda. The interior of the mazda isn't shitty or anything, just not up to par on a 25k car - 15k yes, but not 25k. You're paying the extra on the motor and suspension.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car, I love VW's but never kept one for over 100K miles due to electrical issues. Safe car though but VW started using a lot of Chinese parts; take for example, Bosch OEM fuel filter made in China.
I can get 33 mpg on hwy on my speed3 at 65mph. My daily mpg average is 23.3mpg on a 8 mile commute through the country with about 15 stop signs. On a long 45mph road I can get 40mpg. EPA MPG rating system is outdated.
they measured the quarter mile miles per hour wrong, because those miles per hours in the quarter mile are off by 10 mph. The Mazda should be 99 mph and the GTi should be 91 mph.
VW's quality has been slipping lately. Still have the window regulator problem which has been around since the early 90's. I have been a diehard VW fan for almost 2 decades but no more. I rathet get the MSP3 or the WRX.

MS3 trapping at 109mph? I think something is was way off the calibration or MS3 was modded with stage 2. Would take nearly 350whp for the ms3 to hit that trap speed.

The Speed3 doesn’t hook on first and second gears and the M3 with RWD does a better job launching but eventually the Speed3 will come flying by the M3 if the is enough space. You can see that if you do a rolling race Speed3 vs M3 the Speed3 3 will win every time.
Head gasket issue, window regulator, cheap plastic covers that breaks easily, lousy brake design that's very difficult to replace rotors, radio went bad right after the warranty expired (made in China.. nothing against China, just bad quality).

Top gear did a track test, ford mustang 5.0 vs a lotus elise 1.8 supercharged, the elise beat the shit out of the ford. Ive owned fords and chevy's before they handle like boats and half the time theyre in the workshop, im getting a speed 3 in a couple days

109 is full bolt on Speed3 territory with the stock turbo and a custom tune. Not for a bone stock vehicle, no way.

Yeah but then you lose out on any warranty the car has. If it's a VW you will definitely be using your warranty a lot.

e46 m3 does a quater mile in 13.3 @ 106mph...how the hell does a mazda do it @109mph
