What is the sub bass that happens at the beginning called? I've heard it in classic jungle tracks, sounds like an imperfect sin wave that gets a low pass filter applied to it. It's driving me nuts. Using a single cycle wavetable sample from this song just doesn't do justice.
if i remember correctly the sines used to make the subs in jungle came from either internal sounds in the old akai S3000XLs or from sampling 808s into them. all of the old akai samplers from that era have a weird compression algorithm built into them that color the sound in certain ways. for instance, the pulsing subby bass sound you hear in lots of footwork is actually an 808 cowbell pitched way the fuck down, but trying to replicate it in a DAW doesnt achieve the same result. something about the hardware is making it sound that way
oh sorry i misunderstood you, thats not the sine im thinking of, disregard that. yeah youd be correct it sounds like maybe a slightly distorted 808 with a lowpass and tons of resonance. i know the sh-101 was responsible for a lot of iconic jungle type sounds like the reese bass, so maybe start there
@@IElrekkaI Dude, thank you so much for explaining this all to me. I'm going to still play around with what you've given me using a soft synth, but I ended up figuring it out. Dred Bass! Definitely used in lots of jungle tunes. I was able to come pretty close using serum, ripping a single wave cycle from this track, and applying an lfo mod on a low pass filter's cutoff. Seriously appreciate going out of your way and explaining though. That 808 cowbell trick, oh man, I need to try that in a daw regardless as I've never thought about that. But yeah, I've definitely read that hardware algorithms just give this gritty/crispy sound that is impossible to replicate 1 to 1. I wish everyone had money to get hardware. In the meantime, soft synths it is! hahahha
@@antihero898 AAAAAAA DRED BASS, that was the one i was forgetting. also cool! glad to hear you got what u were looking for. yeah the kinda underappreciated thing about older hardware, more than the bright and granular highs that lowering the bitrate gives (thats whats causing that btw, very easy to replicate in a DAW), is how the other frequencies are effected, like how the lows of the pitched down cowbell seem like theyre getting smoothed and leveled out by whatevers going on in akai hardware. you should look up the sp 202, and check out how crazy the changes in bitrate on that thing can make something sound. i own one and its quite the piece
@@IElrekkaI Exactly dude. I hope to own an Amiga one day. Got Renoise just so I can learn tracker software and use pro tracker some day. But I absolutely will check it out man, appreciate all the advice and the recommendation. I've actually been using the Akaizer vst lately as well, but the sound just doesn't have the same ruggedness and distorted feel like the real thing.
10 years gone today, Rest in Power to one of the best to ever do it.
such a great track to transition from a jungle set to a footwork set!

Anyone know what the paintings on the sides with that white creature on 3:54 are? They look similar to Boddika's Steam release cover. Thanks.
they are made by Ashes57, visual artist which works both with Swamp81 and Teklife
