Up until recently I didn't know how toxic welding fumes were even for mild steel. So a respirator is on my list.

The mask is a life saver, i welded for years without one i am slightly concerned of any long term problems. The only bad part of the mask is when its hot outside.

Save up and get a lincoln papr. Cyberweld has them 500 bucks off. Its like a ac in your helmet and you dont have to work hard to breath in. Best thing i bought for welding. And the welding mask is dope.

3M half face respirators should not be discarded when they get dirty. You should read the factory instructions: remove any kind of filter that is on them and wash the face piece with warm water and a sponge.Obviously the filters are not washable. You do not have to throw them away, only the filters if they get dirty aka feels difficult to breathe in or could smell the fumes. 3M half face masks come with little "bayonet" twisting filters. Twist filter on or twist filter off.

Exactly and he said 16$these things these days are 40$ so he won't be throwing them away. And they aren't hard to clean at all

If you are going to discard the housing rather than clean it you may as well get the fully disposable masks.

Soak the respirator body in purple power 50/50 with water over night, rise it and it will be like new.

Purple power is an acid. Not sure that’s a great idea.

Isn't that just a dust filter though? My 3M fume filters are more like white/gray rounded squares whereas my dust filters are the pink circles

Working full time back in welding at a factory making Radiators for Caterpillar, Volvo etc. after my 1st 3 days I’ve had severe respiratory issues flare up. Bad sinus infection, sore throat, cough etc. we have “fume extractors” and small fans. However the place is just generally dirty, dusty, and stuff floats everywhere in the air. We have painters and Powdercoaters doing their bid also so there’s plenty of stuff to mess with your respiratory system. I picked up some cheap 3M N95 Respirators from Walmart today going to try those under my helmet and see how it goes. I work a 10 hour shift, Do you suggest I wear the respirator the whole shift or only when I’m welding and grinding like I do my helmet? Thanks.

welding for a living just brake down and boy the helmet with a respirator built-in if you're just a hobby welder ok can get away with it i don't lend my helmets i have and cheap one for that reason i tell my welder it's your choice in helmets you like to weld with as an owner of the fab shop to supply them with the right filters for his helmets too as long as the bill they hand it in to the office they get paid for them too same as to welding gloves too i will pay for them as long as you hand the bill to the office too
its worth the money to do that too
