    There is a pretty strong pitch change when you select the first stage of flaps, that’s realistic. We use to train the pilots to anticipate this by judicious use of elevator trim. After some practice it became second nature and nothing was felt by the passengers. The autopilot on the other hand could not anticipate flap selection so it was slow to react. Again most DC-9 pilots flew the aircraft manually except for cruise and low visibility approach such as CATII, however it was customary to configure the aircraft whilst flying manually and the engage the autopilot for the ILS approach. Flying the DC-9 was more of an art than a science but it was so enjoyable! Hopefully this model will get refined so that one day it will be enjoyable as well, it seems at least that the Devs are making an effort to improve it based on user’s feedback, good on them

      @340ACP thanks foe this feedback!! This is exactly what I needed to hear. Good to hear then that the big pitch up movement is realistic and that the real life pilots would simply work around this issue at that time. Yes looking forward to more updates and better sounds once more things are ironed out

    I flew the DC-9 for thousands of hours at a carrier overseas. One thing about the autopilot in the real aircraft, we only ever used it for altitude hold, the turn knob, and the vertical speed wheel. Every other mode was an absolute mess.

      @josea.8790 thanks for that feedback, I'm getting a consistent story about the AP from DC-9 pilots about this. Thanks

      @@PeterMatthess As @340ACP said, flying the DC-9 is more of an art. You strap the jet to your hands with the big turn-knob wheel and the vertical speed wheel, much like riding a motorcycle and that’s it. Everything else feels aggressive, jittery, and useless. It’s a jet you fly purely by feel. The developer can make this a great airplane by partnering with third-party audio companies to enhance the sounds and improving the graphics and every small detail. This aircraft is all about nostalgia and memories, especially when experienced in VR

    • @PeterMatthess
      @PeterMatthess  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @josea.8790 that's good to know and member as a baseline for how it should behave in the air. Tell me, did it have that 'wobble motion' feel to it that is present in this flight model?

    Couple of notes for ye, 1... for takeoff, on your balance sheet it was showing 22.5 % of CG, that would make something like 3.5 trim setting, also the plane rotated too quickly as you need to set the proper EPR for takeoff, use your EPR computer and see what FL/TO gives.... that is Flex Takeoff. Secondly your interception of the LOC beam for the ILS was done at 90 deg and 180 KTS, the Sperry is capable of doing it, but you need to do it at a lower speed, proper capture should be done at about 45 deg or less for the Sperry to capture without having to make rushed corrections. I will add a third point, Climbs and descents can and better be done using your IAS/MACH hold with the "pitch mode" knob, you climb and descend using your power setting, there is no need to constantly use the VS wheel, use it when you are approaching your cruise altitude or leveling off. The DC-9 was perfectly capable of keeping leveled flight by doing proper power settings.

    • @PeterMatthess
      @PeterMatthess  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thanks for those points, where you a DC-9 pilot? I'll have to circle back on the correct CG settings and thrust settings for takeoff, and learn that EPR computer. I was aware that I was trying to engage the LOC quite aggressively, as you can see I really wasn't bothered too much if I did it correctly, for the sake of the video I wanted to see it do SOMETHING. So it was more about how the AP handled being thrown about at that stage. But I was glad to see at least it did its best to hold the LOC and it WAS holding the glide until I added flaps.

    Amazing update , in navigation maters I have to say that the rmi looks mirrored and sometimes CM1 rmi shows single needle when the knob assigned is the doble needle. About autopilot , if you fly on nav cap,then change to hdg sel on, and then off, if you select nav again it won’t capture it even if it says nav cap, the easy and fast way to resolve this is to change the knob to ILS and back to Nav.
    Heading selector pixel from default cockpit cm1 view it’s tricky to actuate it without moving the camera (specially a pity when got to do it fast ) sometimes you change the turn knob or hide cm2 yoke.
    Idk if this is IRL but if you empty the center tank engines will shutdown even if wing tanks are full and fuel xfeed on ( it is required to consume the fuel from wings first and end with central tanks)
    Stall warning does not sound when testing as well as gear horn or some fire tests
    Auto pilot individual axis servos (RUD/ELEV/AIL) are interfering with the AP servo , for the autopilot to work properly it is required to have them off (or down position , idk if that’s on or off)
    TOWS will sound on takeoff run if you yoke into the wind in crosswind takeoff (idk if this is IRL but yoke into the wind on takeoff is pretty common and getting a TOWS on that is kinda scary)
    Windshield wipers knob “park” position is useless since stop position does not stop the wiper anywhere but in the down position ,thus park function of downing them does never apply even if it is selectable on the knob.
    If I use EPR to RAT instrument for T/O , climb or cruise the values suggested does not correspond to the performance of the model, it usually turns over speeding if following it. (It would be amazing to include graphs and tables regarding power settings EPR as well as fuel consumption in the manual or documentation for our calculations)
    At the end, I have flown it on IVAO, still buggy on minor things , specially difficult when autopilot goes crazy, but all that said this aircraft is flyable and enjoyable, trains your hand as a pilot and navigator.
    Incredible job, specially appreciate the work on updating and perfectioning of the model and the interest on community feedback,these are the things that gives a brand it’s name and quality. Keep it on ;)

      Thanks for your feedback, I'll send it to the dev now. I'm not the dev at all, I'm just a random youtuber who the dev somehow decided to start sending his test builds to!! And I know how much people want to see this aircraft improved, myself included. These are excellent points, and not points I have personally come across yet in this addon, so I'll pass them along.

  • @mightymackrel5548

    Definitely going to pick this up once the update comes out. I do wish that the DME readout would be fixed, I can see that getting confusing under pressure. Picking up icing with the A/I on looks like it's not working, even the DC6 wouldn't pick up ice going through a cloud like that with the systems on.
    The top line on the trim page is your CG value, you can find that by tracing down from the TOW marker on the weight and balance chart above it
    The green band on the trim should only be for setting takeoff trim, being able to trim out of it doesn't seem like an issue but I'm not a DC9 pilot so not completely sure
    I think pressing the gear warning cutoff to the right of the glare shield will turn off the terrain warnings

    Hi all. Balooning hapens always on all planes when selecting flaps, particulary at high speeds, that's why we have the tables to discount the fuel burned out along the route so the correct speeds for selecting flaps. If you are comming in too fast and select slats down and deployed, the wing increases the lift force hence balooning so the subsecuent flap settings, although the AP is not too accurate, it exhibits some balooning but is less pronounced at the correct speed, enough for the AP to have the chance to change the trim slightly and maintain altitude. The pitot tubes are on when selecting the "captain" at the rotary switch (drop shapped) under "Ice Protection" panel in the low left side of the overhead panel. DC-9 AP was not so good at the ILS approach, the glide slope was maintained more or less well but the localizer was a bit "snaked" by the AP specially if you tried it out in cross wind apporaches. We used to fly ILS by hand and it behaves quite well and you feel confident when flying'er by hand. VSI is the less accurate of the instruments, it provides a clue on what the aircraft is doing or the tendency to go up or down, we used it to hold some 700 to 800 fpm on the glide, but again just a visual cue when doing your instruments glimpse but paying more attention to the air speed. I'd say that the DC-9 was an (almost) visual flying machine, sometimes following the VOR radial and seldomly following an ILS approach. Greetings.

      @PeterMatthess  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks for your reply! I'll feed this back to the dev. Yea thats interesting to hear that real pilots preferred to fly the approach manually rather than rely on an AP that just didn't have the reliability back then to do the job.

    It says rear white nav light added but when you switched to night it's not there. Also, the strobes are completely wrong. It is not a double flash on the rear, there is a single flash in the front and rear at the same time. The top beacon light isn't working either. The bottom beacon has a perfect effect and I hope to see it fixed on the top. Also, I would love to see engine smoke added, those old JT8's need it! Other than that, its shaping up well!!

    My understanding is that the start pump is used to start the APU in cases where you do not have AC power. If you have a GPU connected, you wouldn't really ever need it for anything. You should not have the start pump running for long as it is not cooled.
    What I'm certain of is that the start pump is DC powered, eg. by the battery. So you only need it when the APU is not running, which stands to reason means that you don't need it on ground power of after the APU is running/on the bus.
    I'm not an IRL pilot but reasonably proficient MD-80 series simulator pilot, and it's the same story there: I'm basically never using the start pump for anything.
    Pitot heat is on the ice protect panel. Off is off. The remaining CAPT/AUX/FO are "on," but will change which one is metered to the left, I believe. You can also check RAT on the ground to make sure you don't have a fault. If you have anything registered on there when on the ground, you have a fault (it's a check for incorrect air/ground logic, if the DC-9 has it -- MD-80 does).
    I've heard from many real pilots that planes do descend in a turn without a pitch adjustment. Increased drag/decreased lift. But likely less than your last video, for sure.
    You also didn't use spoilers, but I don't know if they are arm-able for landing, or whether they must be deployed manually (or if they work).

    • @PeterMatthess
      @PeterMatthess  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Looks really good! Not being picky I’m just curious if someone knows….but didn’t Eastern DC-9-10 series & DC-9-14 use metal nose gear debris deflectors. I know some operators did and some operators used a built in ridged nose gear tire design that deflected water and FOD on takeoff and landing…..always heard maintenance folks at DAL developed it because of the tow-bar and the metal deflectors were damaging nose gear during pushback …if extreme care wasn’t taken on pushback. EAL did a lot of power backs even in ATL and MIA…..other operators using jet-tugs and tow-bars for pushback…..anyway just curious.
