Please bring this "Portofino" mania to an end: Portofino is the least wonderful place in the area! I live here, in Tigullio Gulf, I know what I speak of. Why is it so popular and overrated by everyone? It must be a commercial manovre. Dear Tourist, do yourself a favour: go to visit Nervi, Camogli (and nearby San Frutuoso Abbey of course), Santa Margherita, Sestri Levante, Moneglia, Cinque Terre, Portovenere and such wonderful medieval countryside town as Varese Ligure, half just an hour far from the coast, among the hills. Of course, you must try all the culinary specialities and typical dishes, such as focaccia, pesto, testaroli, frittelle di baccalà, farinata and all the fish you can eat, along with some good white wine, like Bianchetta o Vermentino.
Hi there I am so glad you have made your comments I am thinking of having a driving holiday to Italy and its good to know what the locals think I would really like your recommendations on where to stay in the area thank you DL
dislexic landlord I agree although not as a local. Last summer I spent several weeks driving around Europe including a quick visit to this section of the coastline. We stayed just outside Santa Margherita (which has lots to explore and is significantly larger than Portofino whilst maintaining its charm) and drove round to Portofino. When we arrived it was so busy there was nowhere to park and so we ended up leaving, driving along the coastline, parking up and taking a dip in the sea instead - Very nice!
I was deslighted with all hotel refinamento... I love Venice and PortoFino love!!!💗
