I was introduced to King Crimson in 1969 at the vulnerable age of twelve with the opening salvo of "Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man" and the album ITCOTCK. I followed them up until Islands, but got briefly lost with LTIA and SABB, before the penny dropped upon hearing Red. I then rapidly re-explored the pervious two records and realised what was going on. Fracture began to burn into my brain, initiated by LTIAP2 and culminating in finally grasping LTIAP1. Something profound happened post Islands which has retained my obsession with KC and later Robert's solo work. Along with Brian Eno and Frank Zappa KC and the Fripp regularly feature on my play list. Thank you Mr Fripp for over fifty years of sonic wonderment.

Being 51, I feel lucky to have seen King Crimson as the triple duo in 1995. I enjoy every era of King Crimson. Though I'll admit that Islands is my least favorite. The Wetton era was truly monstrous! Damn shame that John died in January 2017. Thank goodness I also got to see the original Asia in 2010.

@@DavidLazarus I agree re; Islands. Even though Fripp is dismissive of the flawed Lizard, I think its a better album. The track Islands does break into a great end section though. The Bruford/Wetton era though was truly great.

The old Kahler tremolo is my favorite too. Like everything advertised as salvation from tuning troubles, the strings go out of tune. But that’s just playing guitar. Tuning up is unavoidable, and whatever means the player prefers for bending notes and for tuning up after the music stops is what the player should use.
Your sharing of your playing suggestions is most welcome. The trips to the garden are good fun as well.

June 19, 1974. Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles. Row 14 on the aisle. (Funny I remember all that, but it was a memorable evening.) It was during Fracture that two fellows sitting next to me, who had been getting more and more agitated and disoriented lost control of themselves. One grabbed my collar and shouted "This is a funeral! This is a f***ing funeral. We're all DEAD!" at which point, they leapt over me, ran up the aisle screaming and never came back. I think there were many unseen forces at work that night.

Curious what books you collect and have read and what subjects or authors. You'd have to keep an eye on me I'd be pulling out and looking at all your collection. My inner guitar nerd thanks you immensely every time you bring out that beautiful classic Gibson(a Gibson from when Gibson was actually great.) Fracture for me, is one of the finest pieces of music ever written for the Electric guitar period. So very nice to see your magnificent garden which is musically inspirational in itself. Finally so amazing that with even a casual playing for yourself there was only a single bollocks on a run through and so very sad your battery died. My recommendation is always Energizer batteries as they tend to outlast the majority of manufacturers out there. They even do lithium 9V batteries as well to add extra running time. Not sure what you use, but felt compelled to add that information for you. May you and Toyah continue to Rock on and have the best of fun.

If you are taking requests and don’t mind demonstrating on an E-A-D-G-B-E-tuned guitar, I’d love to see some riffs from League of Gentlemen (the ‘80s band, since you’ve noted you also had a ‘60s League of Gentlemen band). In particular I’d love to see what I think was track 2 from side A, called “Inductive Resonance,” from the eponymous album … granted, “Cognitive Dissonance,” “Trap,” “Dislocated,” any or all of those would also be delightful, but if I had one wish and the spirit so moved you and you had the time, an “Inductive Resonance” demo would be grand!!
And I regret not asking before, since you mentioned it once and I’d not previously heard of it, but what was your 1960s League of Gentlemen band all about?? Who was in it with you? Did it record any music?
For that matter, if we’re casting back in time: what was it like replacing Andy Summers in a hotel band!? Was this in a resort town, or did the locals turn up to dance, or … what was the story? Was it like a jazzy tearoom band? Any of those honestly sound pretty awesome! When I prowled around the UK soaking stuff up, among what I dug most were all the independent hotels in places I never would’ve expected, which apparently catered to post-WWII UK vacationers nipping a few towns over for a breather, or to locals looking for a nice Friday night meal and a dance.
I’m pretty sure you’re all about the present and about moving forward-or maybe I’m just projecting my own inclinations onto you-but as the world climate grows more uncertain, I find my mind often escaping to inhabit a warm safe place from the ‘70s … yes, Cold War and all, at least during my childhood we felt certain our grandparents had beaten back fascism for good, and that the hard-right in general were now permanently on the back foot; kindness and reason and fellow-feeling would win out, science and peace would bring middle class prosperity to all the world … people even dared to imagine humanity’s worst problem might be a life without adversity getting kinda boring! Well, we sure sidestepped THAT problem, didn’t we!??
So anywho, I think your early-to-late adolescence coincided with the first decades of that global sense of a new world being just around the corner … that sense that we were all building it, and could build it as we liked. In hindsight, it seems my childhood spanned the last decade so far in which that feeling was the dominant paradigm. I guess I’d like to hear more about the earlier decades of that paradigm, when perhaps progress felt inevitable and not like a losing uphill fistfight. I mean, after your country’s been bombed half to pieces by the far-right, and then you DECISIVELY WIN A GLOBAL WAR against the bastards, it’s got to feel like tearoom dances and seaside weekends are in everyone’s future, no?
Wow. So that really got away from me, didn’t it? Um, lol, yeah … where was I? “Inductive Resonance” would be great, if you would! Much love to you and yours, and wishes for your health and safety.

I wonder if Robert would contact Massimo Bucci, a classically trained pianist who has his own TH-cam channel, to see if he would take a stab at it. He's done an incredible job with both ELP and Genesis tunes.

As an obsessive book collector I am intrigued by your obviously extensive collection. Perhaps you could give us a tour of your library sometime.

agree fully! the thing that strikes me of what can be seen of it is how seemingly staid/classical the accumulation seems to be & i wonder how familiar he might be with so-called avantgarde literature, as best exampled in England by, say, Bob Cobbing & Dom Sylvester Houédard (who were both responsible for the amazing magazine focussing exclusively on sound poetry, KROKLOK - the ony such periodical anywhere/anytime, so far as i'm aware). it seems that most folks who're relentlessly inventive/investigative in their own genres rarely are so in their appreciations elsewise (avantgarde writer prefers landscape paintings & Broadway show tunes; avantgarde painter prefers the blues & gothic horror; avantgarde composer prefers sonnets & hyperreal drawings of cats) & one can't help but wonder what's in those tomes. we know he's familiar with Tom Phillips (cover of "Starless And Bible Black" - which includes an outtake from his "A Humument" project, which, despite its relentlessly investigative approach, is still firmly grounded in straightforwardly linear narrative structures, falling more into the category of "illuminated text" than "visual poetry") but HOW familiar & does the (presumed) interest extend beyond Phillips (who is, after all, far more "accessible" (in all ways) than the likes of Cobbing, Houédard & their cronies)?
how'bout it, Robert? what's on those shelves?

When I first heard In the Court of the Crimson King back in whatever I blew several brain gaskets. I replaced them over time but I have never been the same. Thank you Mr Fripp.

Electirc Segovia! Glad to find you online sir. Coming by way of unexpected, and explored love of Philip Glass, Eno. Heard or read great short incident of your work with Trevor Horn, you submitting some "wild" sounding guitar part for a mix, which Mr. Horn found to be musically perfect for the song/production at hand. Thank you sir.

What a treat to see you play this close up. Such discipline. Never will I forget seeing Crimson in the fourth row at a concert for the first time. I didn't even know who they were, my friend said, you know who Bill Bruford is from Yes, he is in the band. i was blown away by the performance and the music, and remember that it seemed like Fripp was staring at me the whole time, he has that effect. Crimson was the opening band for the Kinks, imagine that dichotomy, during the Starless era.

Hi Robert. I recall hearing Fracture for the first time around 1979. I loved it, but just assumed it was built from numerous meticulous studio overdubs. It was only many years later when I purchased The Great Deceiver set that I realised it was a live recording. 🤯🤯🤯

    Hello Robert,
We met upstairs at The Palace in Hollywood 1984? (Bill, Tony, Adrian) as you sipped your wine..., and on The Charles Bridge in Prague September 2016 day before Karlin Hall while I was engaged with a chat with Jakko. I have used tuning forks (my knee disapproves!), Peterson strobes, Boss pedal tuners, software tuners like Guitar Tuna & one for cellos. I rely a lot on my ears as well. THE most Amazing Tuner/Frequency Analyzer I have ever had the Pleasure of using was at a pal's studio & I brought my new Deluxe Godin Oud w/Impulse responses, etc-a beast to tune. The tuner is called Snail by Ircam. It is THE most Accurate & wonderful tuner & it even made tuning the oud...Easy! It is a Miracle-its own "Uni Verse"!!!
I will see you in City Winery in NYC-coming from Los Angeles to hear you talk about The Muse! I know you practice with discipline and diligence. When I pick up one of my guitars, I usually compose something or discover new tunings -a la Joni-or chords! I am open to your Wisdom...Sir!
    Ira

I have always wondered how much of the almost tightrope like nature for the performer of this middle section of Fracture contributes to the overall extreme sensation of tension produced in the crescendo over a few minutes in a performance of Fracture. Would the music be as effective played as an arrangement by a few players playing easier parts without that danger? Also was the extreme simple guitar part in the building section of Starless a reaction to Fracture, just to go as stripped back as possible? But above all thanks to Robert for showing these amazing insights.. just super appreciated.
