When my husband and I were first married we were very poor. My parents bought us our first Christmas tree. We didn’t have anything to put on that tree, so I made all the ornaments from baking soda. I had the twelve days of Christmas cookie cutters, and a paint set It was the most beautiful Christmas tree!
My wife asked me if we was going to have a Charlie Brown tree again. When we moved into our new place COVID had just hit here and we also had absolutely NOTHING. I MEAN NOTHING... I stayed up all night just so she would have a tree and present to wake up to. I found the saddest little ugliest tree I could find in the woods and brought it home. 😊😊 A few years later, I had no clue how much she loved that day... Also happens to be the day we got together 🤗
i love baking soda clay because it's so white. i used this clay to make ornaments with my 4 year old son - 40 years ago. we still have them! now i'm making ornaments with my 4 year old granddaughter.
That's really awesome. I wish I'd come across this craft when my nieces & nephews were still little. Oh well I'll just have to do my own. Maybe I could do a cats pawprint with kitties. They'd probably get annoyed but for a good keepsake that's ok once. I'll just bribe them with canned food.
I used to make little dolls from this back in the 70's , I would use watered down white glue after to seal them , then paint them with model paints. My mom has kept them all these years and then still look perfect .
We used this recipe to make Christmas ornaments when I was in elementary school, way back in the 70’s. We made them on Friday and left them on the windowsill to dry over the weekend then painted them on Monday, sealed them with a layer of white glue on Tuesday and took them home on Wednesday when we got out for Christmas. Such great memories!❤❤
I made this way back in the day, 70’s . My sister reminded me recently that I had made pendants and put beads and shells on them, then put them on necklace cords. She bought them to give to her junior high friends, and they loved them. Ahhh…Distant memories. I recently used this recipe with my granddaughter. It worked just as you demonstrated and what we didn’t use I stored in zip lock bag and stored in the refrigerator. It stayed there for months. This time we had fun make little figurines. Easy and cheap but works fantastically.
It is a wonderful craft. One thing I like was the fact if a child decided to taste it, 😅 it is safe!! Thanks I have also made the salt/flour dough. It to looks like crystal and has a glitter to it. You can air dry or bake it, 😊❤
When I made this for kiddos when I would babysit, I would use koolaid to color the batches, as well as smell good. Didn't have to worry about them getting dye all over. This method works better.
I'm so glad that you mentioned storing it and how to do so. That was my question. I'm also grateful for the comments in this post. They reminded me about salt dough and I learned that adding kool-aid to the baking soda clay is where it's at. 😊 I was just searching for something fun to do with my grandbabies tomorrow. The timing for this couldn't be more perfect. Thank you all! ❤

Cold Porcelain actually contains glue, which makes it stronger and more flexible than this. But I imagine adding glue, handcream, and vinegar like cold porcelain to this would work well.
I wonder if it would become rubbery. I havent actually done either, but there's an appeal about this one being able to take so much detail from the mold. I wonder what kind of clay is best for that sort of application...
If you want to repair something and make it really strong use baking soda and Super Glue and you can sand it. Put a few drops of glue then sprinkle some baking soda, add more glue if necessary.

I have all of these ingredients in my kitchen now. I'm super excited to let my grandbabies make ornaments with me. Also, if you can store it how do you recommend doing so?

Years ago I made Christmas ornaments using this clay. Rolled out and pressed cookie cutters into it . Then poked a hole into the dough at the top using a wooden spoon handle dowel tip. When the ornaments were dry I strung thin ribbon through the hole. Have used food coloring to color the dough when making it. Follow the drying time in video. Thanks for the memories.

She used it in a silicone mold in the video. I think she used corn starch as a release agent in previous videos. Baking Soda Clay basically is its own release agent though. It doesn't stick to things like paper clay or air dry clay does.

Hi there! I have celiac disease, and I love that this can be made without wheat flour! I can now make a clay that my kids can make things with, and not get sick! Thank you so much for this!! A great replacement for play doh that can be made into more permanent things. 💜
Nice! You can ALSO put the "soda clay" inside the "cornstarch silicone" mold onto a warming tray to dry it out. This method is handy when the "clay" is still too soft to effectively de-mold it without deforming it... and the thickness of the mold plays a part too... So many possibilities. The silicone-corn starch mold making is a game changer for creating interesting crafts.
I’ve made your clay before and I just loved the consistency and the texture and it lasted a long time in a closed jar. It seemed to be more moist than Das clay and whiter in color.
I cannot wait to make something with the grandkiddos! I have two questions: 1) Does the thickness need to be 1/4"? (My guess for the thickness you had). 2) Can projects be painted with acrylic paint after they have dried?

I used this about 20 years ago to patch a factory flaw on the base of a Royal Doulton figurine. I don't know how it got released from the factory, but the edge of the base had a flattened edge where it should have been round. It was painted and glazed so it wasn't a chip or anything. I used the soda/starch clay and recontoured the area, let it dry, painted it to match the rest of the base, then brushed on some gloss glaze. It's still going strong 20 years later and you would never know that factory flaw was there.
Oh this could be a game changer for me!! Quick question : is it a little bit flexible, like air-dry foam clay? If so, you just saved me tons of money, lol! In any case, thanks for sharing!
You could make a small batch with pva glue in, that might give you a bit of flexibility. It could reduce how easy it is to paint, so a bit of experimenting would be needed. Maybe split a batch into several parts and add different amounts to each as it cools down. If you cook the pva I think it would go stringy.

@@OurUpcycledLifeHow about water? Can you get them wet? If so, for a short period of time or a long period of time? I'm thinking of use in the garden for custom plant saucers or planters.
This would be fun to make ornamental shape flowers with a small hole in the top to put a ribbon through and paint “friend” or “best friends” to give as gifts.
Hi. If you have leftover clay can you put it into a plastic ziplock bag to keep for later and how long will it keep in this bag? Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas.
The nice thing about this home made clay is that insects and mice dont seem to be attracted to it. I used to be a teacher, and some of the other flour based clays dont seem to last as well.
I would love to try this to design and decorate tiles for a backsplash behind my stove in my kitchen. How do you think they would hold up? And I’ll have to do some research on what people use to adhere tiles to their drywall
They would probably need some kinda clear acrylic or epoxy coating to keep them cleanable and dry from high humidity cooking. But I need a new back splash too! ☺
Wow, looks like a better alternative to salt-flour dough! 😍😍😍 I recently moved across the ocean and had to leave my air-dry modelling clay behind and been missing it, so I'm super glad I've found this video! 😍😍😍
This is also a great alternative to Play-Doh for children who have celiac disease, since Play-Doh contains gluten, and many people with celiac disease can’t touch things with gluten in it.
Hey! This clay is very very nice but it is not cold porcelaine. Cold porcelaine has the possibility to form a tear shape when pulling on it and baking soda doesn't stretch like that. It's an awesome clay tho! And it's such a good replacement for cold porcelaine
Wow, I am so excited to see this video. I have an old frame from 1941 which is my Grandparents wedding photo. The frame is a bit beat up, I have always wanted to fix it. I am so excited.
My kids and I used this recipe to make Christmas tree ornaments. We painted them with Elmer’s glue and food coloring. The ornaments are 45 years old now, and are still just as vibrant as they were when we made them.
Wow 😮This is brilliant 👏 Thank you so much! I love working with clay. I bought several IOD clay and sadly they were dried out so now I'm stuck with 2 brand new packages and cannot use.
I am assuming this can be used for pet's paw prints. Does it last well and can you coat it (after it has completely dried) with mod podge or a clear spray sealer? Love this being non toxic!

Right now my project is to do miniature houses for my christmas village. Im gonna try this home made clay for my project and ill update you with its results. Thankyou so much! Youre such a big help. Im a big fan now! 😊❤ Love from the Philippines! ❤❤❤
Oh sounds like a lovely project
How is the Christmas village coming along? Did the clay work?
I've been using the recipe with glue and lotion.... I've not seen this one before.... Thank you🌹
You’re welcome 😊
Can the food coloring be added to the water before cooking it ? Thank you so much, can't wait to try, much appreciated.
Yes you can!
Simply genius, I will certainly be using this. Compliments from across the pond my dear.
Wonderful!
It looks so nice to work with! I'm going to try some myself.
Have fun!
Thank you! I don't know what I'm going to make, but can't wait to try this
Enjoy!
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe with everyone! I can’t wait to make some Christmas ornaments with my nephews!
Hope you enjoy!
Awesome! How durable are decor items using this recipe- wondering how easy it breaks or cracks
I’ve had some of mine for a few years . Not like plastic but will hold up well
@@OurUpcycledLifeHow about water? Can you get them wet? If so, for a short period of time or a long period of time? I'm thinking of use in the garden for custom plant saucers or planters.
@@cs7717 No on the water-proof ability, they are made with food after all....🤔
How long does it hold up in a sealed bag after you make, or can you make it ahead of time?
Keep in fridge for a few weeks sealed container
Thank you so much..can't wait to try this activity with my very active 3 year old grand daughter. Will let you know how it turns out❤
Have fun!
amazing share ❤
Thank you! 🤗
Does this clay have to be used right away or will it keep for a while in an air tight container? Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Yes it will
Thank you! I have made cold porcelain in the past.forgot the recipe. Thanks again!
You are so welcome!
This would be fun to make ornamental shape flowers with a small hole in the top to put a ribbon through and paint “friend” or “best friends” to give as gifts.
Excellent idea
Hi. If you have leftover clay can you put it into a plastic ziplock bag to keep for later and how long will it keep in this bag? Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas.
It will last about a week thanks for watching
The nice thing about this home made clay is that insects and mice dont seem to be attracted to it. I used to be a teacher, and some of the other flour based clays dont seem to last as well.
I've never made this, but I've made flour clay or flour play-dough. Thanks for the recipe and new idea. 💜
Hope you like it!
Thank you for sharing. ❤❤
You are so welcome
Will this crack over time like the Crayola air dry clay does? I'm excited to try this. Thanks for sharing!
I haven’t found that it cracked at all
@@OurUpcycledLife Thank you!
I would love to try this to design and decorate tiles for a backsplash behind my stove in my kitchen. How do you think they would hold up?
And I’ll have to do some research on what people use to adhere tiles to their drywall
Not sure it would hold up well if a lot of water would get on it
They would probably need some kinda clear acrylic or epoxy coating to keep them cleanable and dry from high humidity cooking. But I need a new back splash too! ☺
@@noeldeal8087would be awesome to design our own
YOU are my favorite go to for excellent ideas!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yay! Thank you!
I never knew that’s how “cold porcelain” was made!!! How awesome!
It's so good!
Actually, it's not cold porcelain 'cause no glue was added.
This is not Cold Porcelain. CP is made from corn starch, glue, vinegar and mineral oil or Vaseline. There are tons of recipes online.
Wow, looks like a better alternative to salt-flour dough! 😍😍😍 I recently moved across the ocean and had to leave my air-dry modelling clay behind and been missing it, so I'm super glad I've found this video! 😍😍😍
Hope you like it!
When I was a kid, my mother couldn't afford to buy Play-Doh so she used to make clay like this for me instead. And it was fun!
Great memories
This recipe smells better than play-doh!!
This is also a great alternative to Play-Doh for children who have celiac disease, since Play-Doh contains gluten, and many people with celiac disease can’t touch things with gluten in it.
Thanks for the recipe to this Beautiful Clay. I Love It!❤😂🎉
My pleasure 😊
1. ¼ cup of water ½ cup of baking soda ¼ cup of cornstarch
Hola preparé esta masa y la moldee, pero se quebró después de seca, que hice mal? 😢
If you cherish your enameled pot, don't use metal utensils in it. 😬
Hey! This clay is very very nice but it is not cold porcelaine. Cold porcelaine has the possibility to form a tear shape when pulling on it and baking soda doesn't stretch like that. It's an awesome clay tho! And it's such a good replacement for cold porcelaine
Wow this is amazing! I'm going to try it out. Thanks so much for this tutorial 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Hey, how well does it hold once dried, not easy to crumble..? Sorry if I missed you talking about it, looks promising though as a diy tool
It's good I don’t find that at crumbles easy at all. It’s a very good clay.
Cool, Im gonna try it soon!
When mixed with materials such as white glue or glue, does baking soda produce a flexible paste that is used to create fine details in art molds?
Sunday school and kids club! They loved making things with this clay!
Such a fun project. Enjoy.
You're the best 👌...can i use paint on this clay, and if so what types of paint...thank you for all your helpful, frugal, beautiful ideas
Yes, absolutely any type of
@@OurUpcycledLife thank you
Very wholesome video and such a great idea. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Wow, I am so excited to see this video. I have an old frame from 1941 which is my Grandparents wedding photo. The frame is a bit beat up, I have always wanted to fix it. I am so excited.
Oh fantastic
This clay is SO cool.I never knew baking soda could be used to make homemade clay!😊
It's so good!
My kids and I used this recipe to make Christmas tree ornaments. We painted them with Elmer’s glue and food coloring. The ornaments are 45 years old now, and are still just as vibrant as they were when we made them.
Oh, that’s awesome. What great memories.
Never tried it brfore. Never even heard of it before. Thank you for sharing.
Hope you enjoy
If I don't use it all can I put it in a container?Thank you for sharing.😀
Yes you can!
This is amazing! Thanks from the Philippines!
Our pleasure!
Wow 😮This is brilliant 👏 Thank you so much! I love working with clay. I bought several IOD clay and sadly they were dried out so now I'm stuck with 2 brand new packages and cannot use.
Oh no and so expensive
Thank you for the tutorial. It was clear and concise. Is the final product waterproof? Thanks.
No it isn’t
I am assuming this can be used for pet's paw prints. Does it last well and can you coat it (after it has completely dried) with mod podge or a clear spray sealer? Love this being non toxic!
Yes, that’s a perfect project for this and I would seal it up with some spray poly acrylic sealer
Thank you. I wonder how strong it is after drying? Is it breakable? Thank you. Is it breakable?
I’ve had some for a few years and held up well
Thank you/From Sweden
This is fantastic!! Thank you!! I am for sure going to make this for the kids (and myself) to make Christmas decos
Have fun!
Thank you very much I have several little grandchildren that love clay I can't wait to make it for them!
Have fun!
I can't wait to try making min flowers with this clay. Thanks!❤❤❤
You are welcome! I hope you enjoy making them.
This is perfect, thank you for showing this wonderful recipe! I wondered how to work my ideas. Now I know!😊
You are so welcome!
Can you paint on the dried projects? Or do you have to color the mixture?
Sure can paint
Can you put it outside with some sort of sealer
I don’t think it would hold up well
