I enjoy your channel and wish you the best with your film adventures! I know this video is old, but way too many people are led to believe that a Bolex (H16 or H8) with the reflex viewfinder is “better” somehow, but that isn’t actually the case. Motion pictures were produced using non-reflex viewing systems for many years. A through the lens reflex system will help in framing and composition, but isn’t necessary at all. I say the non-reflex Bolex models are just as good as the reflex versions. Setting focus on any system comes down to math.. focus depends on the distance between the subject and the film plane being accurate. Framing the subject, unless you are trying for a very close shot, is easily accomplished once test shots have been made and you are familiar with your camera. Even when viewing the actual composition through the lens, accurate focus will still rely on measuring that distance. Unfortunately, the “reflex is better” attitude is keeping prices much higher than they should be for those systems.

    I’m
Grateful the algorithm led me to your channel - thank you for this reflective video, getting me prepared for the 16mm production class im taking next semester and for the purchase of a Bolex I’m preparing for

Did you purchase a Computar lens f1.2/12.5-75mm zoom? if so, how did it go? I am looking at purchasing this lens until I can afford a better one. If you did purchase this lens, you would be the only one on TH-cam talking about a Bolex with this lens. You could do a thread on TH-cam just on using this lens and how different film formats turn out with this lens. Due to the fast lens, you don't need such a high ISO, low noise better outcome. Thanks for your post.

Just acquired a Bolex H16 Reflex. Going to use it in conjunction with my BMPCC 6k pro for my next feature. Excellent content. Thank you. Subbed.

You have the second model of the Reflex H with the variable shutter. The designations RX-1, RX-2, asf. are confusing although having been originated by Paillard & Cie themselves. To me this is the RX-2. Cosmicar are good lenses, just to mention. That’s a nice set you’re having. I’m assuming that you’re aware of the possibility to attach an electric motor to your model, the MC-17 as it was called.
If you ever need technical assistance or wish a service to the camera or a lens, let me know. I am a professional cinema gear repairman located in Switzerland, about one hour from the former Bolex factory. I know Paillard-Bolex products inside out. Just make contact via YT. I also winterize equipment.

@@avi_g That will be so-called Double-Eight fim. Dennis Toeppen sells it, simply google him, and a number of stores all over the planet. You will also read 2 × 8 mm.

I’m kinda in the same situation. I bought a Non-Reflex last year(to get my feet wet for 16mm, I didn’t want to spend the amount on something I didn’t know very well yet.) and now I’m taking my time to save up for a REX 2 or higher model. I know it’s probably gonna cost me $800 or more but it will be truly worth my time, patience, and hard work I’ll put in to afford one.

I was curious on how much a roll of film cost you when you’re ready to develop it ?
    Like a good 2-4 minutes ?
