    Thank you for this reaction.
This song was written about a girl that went to high school with Ed Kowalczyk (lead singer). She'd been in a collision with a drunk driver fleeing an armed robbery. She was an organ donor. He saw this as the circle of life. In a symbolic reincarnation, he described Barb's blue eyes and confusion being given to the newborn down the hall as she passes.
It's an interesting take to think that we no longer own our confusion once we've passed away.
It's a spiritual, connected-to-everyone spin on dying. I prefer it.
He's got such an amazing voice. I was in love with this singer as a teen when this song came out. I'm over it now but he still holds a special past-crush place in my heart.

The placenta would definitely go on the floor if someone didn't catch it. The nurses are usually ready for it. lol Anyway, I always interpreted this to be that the "old mother's" soul went into the new "baby down the hall." I love, love, love this song. Once when a local radio disc jockey said on the air that it was a depressing song about abortion (the placenta line had confused him), I HAD to call him and explain it is not at all about that...that it's about reincarnation. "Forces pulling from the earth again....I can feel it, coming back again." This is a profound, and in a way joyful, song. Thank you for reacting to it.

I’ve always interpreted this song as the mother and child dies in the beginning and down the hall the mother and child thrive. The crushing pain that some get thrown and yet life blesses birth to others seemingly at random. The confusion, the pain, the love, the hope. Life is never clear cut and can deliver beauty and pain in a flash of lighting and one should understand the magnitude

After buying this album when it came out kept in rotation for a good decade or more. This just reminds me to bring it back into rotation, great album!

It's about a mother don't during child birth and the traffic irony of a new life springing from death. Flowers from soil.

The song is about child birth and the fact that women still die during child birth. The mother may die, but the baby will live on to carry on the legacy. Mourning and celebration.

I remember crying like a baby watching One Tree Hill and this song played in one of the most emotional scenes of the tv show.
