      I'm afraid the only solution is to post timely updates on "sensitive" subjects ad free over on Patreon exclusively, and then only make these videos public on YT after enough time has passed for the subject matter to no longer be considered "sensitive" and "not suitable for all advertisers" by the folks at You Tube.

    Worked two contracts in India as a A320 Captain and use to fly into India, working for a Middle East airline. First, weather reports are often not accurate if it is done manually. Secondly, drainage is poor at most of the runways across India. Some of the newer airports such Hyderabad and Bangalore are much better, but I still do not think they are as good as western airports. Thirdly monsoon rain in India is some of the heaviest I have seen. Think of the heaviest rain you have ever seen, and it lasting for hours. I remember during one monsoon downpour that was measured at nine feet in 24 hours. Back in 2005 Mumbai got one of those downpours and the airport was under water for about a week. I experienced the worst hydroplaning in my career at the Cochin airport in 2011. This was a night landing about 2 am local and the weather report was high ceilings and rain was not even reported. There was numerous thunderstorms in the area. I planed on poor braking and selected medium auto brake and briefed full reversers. In reality we broke out of IMC about 100 feet above minimums with wipers selected on high. The first officer lost the runway environment because of the heavy rain, but I still had the runway in sight and landed the aircraft. When I selected full reverse I lost the runway environment and went to instruments. The only thing that slowed the aircraft was the reversers, the auto braking was cycling on and off throughout the aircraft deceleration and brakes were really not effective until probably 50 knots. I can not remember the runway length but I think it was between 9000-11000 feet and we used almost all of it. On taxi in the terminal was struck by lightening and lost power and a few seconds later the control tower was struck by lightening and lost power. Yeah he probably had to clean his underwear after that lightening strike. We taxied to the ramp when the tower was struck and lost power, but I elected to taxi to the gate because the marshaller was still standing there holding his flashlights, despite the terminal and tower being struck by lightening. Yeah only in India. About 15 minutes after we left the aircraft to go to the hotel a Gulf Air a319 or A320 slid off the runway and the airport was closed for a couple of days. Read the accident report where it stated weather was not a factor. Yeah never trust the weather reports and always plan on hydroplaning during monsoon season in India.

    Nice job in going over the details of landing computations, Jeppeson info on runways with displaced thresholds, and wind additives to VRef. This brought back memories for me of flying as a FedEx MD-11 Captain into Mumbai the day after the record for daily rainfall of 37.1 inches on 26 JUL 2005. Iffy weather forecast with tailwinds, sketchy runway lighting and approach aids due to damage from rain, notams of debris on runway, etc.. I had been called out on reserve to D/H all the way to Dubai to fly the trip to Mumbai. Fortunately, I worked with the dispatcher to “go have a look at it” with enough fuel to make a few approaches and still fly back to Dubai if I didn’t like the situation on arrival. Things improved enroute and I was able to land with a headwind, the ILS in commission, and the runway clear of debris. The only other issue was getting instructions for exiting the runway via a taxiway that was new and not depicted on the Jepp airport diagram. I retired at the beginning of 2012, but I’ll never forget that Reserve callout.

      Excellent description.

    • @flyerhiker
      @flyerhiker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OceanSwimmer thank you. Lots of times when you’re on Reserve and get called out it’s tough to get up to speed for airports, weather, and maintenance issues (including MEL deferrals). The advantage I had was the time it took to deadhead from Memphis to Dubai and crew rest, allowing my crew to gather a lot of info before we were scheduled to fly. I also need to give credit to the dispatcher for working with me to address my concerns with safely operating into a potentially dicey environment. I forgot to mention that someone in a heavy jet slid off the end of the runway that same day (I think I remember it being Canada, though I’m not sure.)

      flyerhiker I was with Iran Air on the 727-100/200 in the 70’s. We did Karachi/Bombay turns out of Tehran. Besides Viet Nam and Houston, I’ve never seen so much rain...and amazingly...never so glad to get back to Tehran. Good to be retired, eh?

    • @robertvaughn6646
      @robertvaughn6646 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I retired a few months after you and my BOM story was similar. Monsoon rains, landing 09 but last 1,000' closed for maint, quartering tailwaind and no grooving. I was lucky that after 2 approaches we never saw the runway, and I had a HUD, and diverted to Hyderabad. Another goofy story for another day.

      @@mannypuerta5086 Yes, it's good to be retired! Glad you survived the Karachi/Bombay turns from Tehran. I've also experienced the Houston rains when I was based there with Continental, along with other interesting places along the Gulf Coast. Tropical Storms & Typhoons in the Philippines, Guam, and American Samoa were also amazing to behold when I was in the Air Force. I was only in Tehran once with the military in @ 1975-76. It was at night and I was amazed at all the uncontrolled ground traffic all over the ramp!

    I think you hit the nail on the head. You have to take ALL variables into account and HOW they will coalesce to increase your probability of an unfavorable outcome. If you isolate each variable and mitigate independently you are asking for trouble. I had to learn this important lesson through experience one dark and stormy night with a hefty direct cross wind, IMC, rain, and a wet runway.

    I stay at about 4NM on the 14 approach end and saw this MD-11 and thought.... That's gonna be interesting! Something inside me knew this was not a good idea.
    I'd take those wind speeds with a pinch of salt as we had an approaching cyclone within an hour of this FedEx arrival here in mumbai.
    The visibility seemed satisfactory as I saw this airplane right down to about when it was about 500' from touchdown. I live on the 15 floor and I was clearing my roof for the expected cyclone and there was winds close to 30-35kts from where I was on my roof, and the cyclone was passing further to the south of me(closer to the airport). The probable reason for them to use 14 (which they use very occasionally) is the storm which would be on the approach end of 09 and 32 moving toward the approach end of 27 but off set.
    You should really check the weather that day by some means
    It's the worse we've had in a long time,
    In sure it may uncover some new facts
    Thanks for the great content as always.
    Cheers on your steady growth.

    Beautiful aircraft. MD-11 should be my favorite aircraft, since it brought me into the United States in 1994. It was Finnair, and one of the brand new MD-11's. Finnair was the MD-11 launch customer. At that time, I wanted to be on 747 of course, but I didn't realize how lucky I was to be on the MD-11. It was huge!!! 2-5-2 seat configuration!!! Beautiful machine. Now even the 747 is no longer flown on U.S. passenger carriers... America without the Twin Towers, Concorde, and DC-10 and 747 flying on local airlines is not longer the same. 777 is nice, but it's kind of bloated. 767 will be exiting service... 757 is beautiful, like a sports model. Beautiful. And of course the plane that made America what it used to be, the DC-9, MD-80, MD-90, and 717. I've flown on the 717 recently. Beautiful aircraft. You never know how much you like something, when it really becomes rare, and you really know how much you liked it when it's gone...

    As soon as I heard that the incident involved an MD-11, I wasn't surprised. As others have noted, it's not your father's DC-10. Those are pretty hot ships and this isn't the first time Fed-Ex has had a landing issue with one. I'm disappointed that TH-cam has elected to become the information police. There is nothing here that either hurts anyone or represents a radical view. You are just doing what most pilots do whenever they hear about an accident. I'd be more worried about all of us if we didn't try to analyze accidents. It simply means we don't want to be the NEXT one. Keep it up, Juan, I enjoy your channel.

    Juan - I have flown in and out of Mumbai many times on business and I can attest to the runway slipperiness. About 3 years ago I was due to fly out when it had been raining heavily all day (similar to this incident). The flight was due to leave at 1AM and when I got to the airport I found out a 737 had overrun the runway on landing and all flight operations were temporarily stopped. The other runway was unavailable as it was being worked on. At 5AM the airline declared the flight as canceled and booked me on a new flight the next day along with putting me up in a nice hotel in South Mumbai. Not surprised to see a fully loaded MD11 (my brother is a senior FedEx pilot and told me it was likely to be fully loaded) didn't make it with a wet runway. What is sad is the Mumbai authorities know the runway needs to be grooved, but haven't yet done it.

    Thank You Sir-Juan for the history lesson to go along with your update. Had wondered how shoes got their tread design. We enthusiasts of flight really have no idea what it takes to operate our aircraft safely each and everyday. Even more respect to the flight crew and cabin crew who get us to our destination. Including young Squire-Pete in the video always brings a smile to our face. Again, Thank You!👍😎❤🎅❤😎👍

    Retired Captain here. Unreported factors can cause quite a cold sweat half way down the runway wondering if you’re going to get stopped. There’s no going around after touchdown. Been there, done that, except for the sliding off the runway part, just got lucky. Good reporting of the facts.

    By the look of the amount of spray from the reverse thrust, their certainly seemed to be an extensive amount of water on the runway, known slippery runway, and no tranverse runway grooves displacing the surface water (and you now just shooting me down in flames with the reverted rubber comment), it certainly seemed they were up against the odds....lucky they didn't overrun into the river 😳😳😳😳
    Huge congrats on the 200k subscribers as well, great milestone for one of the best channels on TH-cam.
    Cheers from Aus!!!!
