Queen Alice Tarot - The Story, The Illustrations, The History Part 1

My Project: Put the cards in order from start to finish and see if the RWS associations fit with/do justice to the metaphors or intentions of Lewis Carroll's 1865 version of Alice in Wonderland.
Bonus: A peak at some of John Tenniel's original illustrations and how Dame Darcy used them as inspiration for her project.

Wow! What a spectacular pair of videos these are! Sooo much fun to watch, and I really learned a lot! I am so impressed with the level of research you did. It was so fun to see the original illustrations compared to the cards as well as benefitting from hearing where each card fell in the story. Your videos make me want to buy this deck, when I’d never thought I’d like it at all. Really a feat since I’ve never liked the Alice stories and can’t quite see why people love them so much nor do I feel drawn to this art style (so busy!), but your appreciation for the deck really brings the value of these cards front center. I really appreciate your pointing out the dysfunctional relationship between the Tweedle brothers being apt for the devil card - that helps me appreciate the pairing on that card a lot more. Thanks also for mentioning the three cards that you think were not the best match with the story (2C, 4W, QS). And your showing how the LWB turned out when printed was also super helpful. Some questions: its been about 9 months since these videos posted, has your liking for this deck changed at all over that time? Also, what do you think about their being two versions of Alice (small and larger) on the Hierophant card? That baffles me. And the caterpillar being green instead of blue also puzzles me since you say the text clearly says he is blue. What could the green choice mean, if anything? Thanks again for bringing such rich content to your videos! What a treat they are.

First of all, thank you! I included this deck in a couple of the deck collection videos recently and talked about its strengths (decks for kids and storytelling & the tarot). I still feel it has a lot to offer. Alice changes size so many times in wonderland - it's mind boggling for her as well as the reader. I never asked DD about that card, but I suspect that is the artist trying to replicate the two acolytes on a more traditional RWS card. I wouldn't read too much into it. As for the green/blue caterpillar issue, again artistic license I assumed. It's too bad because I like the blue on the caterpillar. Another thought is that DD probably was cautious of copying Tenniel's art too closely. I'm sure it's been in the public domain for a long time, but still, she had to make it her own (like she did by representing Alice's face at so many ages).
